October is going to mean they have to dissolve parliament almost as soon as they get back from summer break isn’t it?

Yea. Parliamentary work is at an all time low for this term so it's very much finished, except to get the tax cuts through and Rwanda. You can expect lots of novel policies and announcements but very little delivery.

Have thought of jgw several times this last week. I've missed their levity. If you are still reading I hope everything is ok.

I keep thinking I hear jgws voice in certain posts, if not, it's someone with a similar posting style.
Maybe it's wishful thinking, but their sense of humour was fab.

Rwanda is interesting, even the die hard tory voters I know think it's pointless. Once you point out the cost, the numbers and the reciprocal agreement they start questioning the point. Nobody I speak to agrees with it for all sorts of reasons, mainly that it's plain wrong. If they get a plane in the air, I think it will be another loss of support for them, not the boost they seem to think it will give them.

Notonthestairs · 15/03/2024 08:25

I think the obfuscation of costs over Rwanda is what will bring that policy down. I suspect we have barely scratched the surface of what it will cost overall, not just in set up but ongoing payments to Rwanda. They simply can't balance the books. Or, more to the point, arent interested in value for money - being free with the cheque book whilst people are struggling with day to day living doesn't play well.

Anyone explain why the government is talking about getting rid of NI ? Really struggling to get my head round what would replace it.

Here is Hunt being asked about

https://x.com/BestForBritain/status/1768329594333970489?s=20

This has had little attention, considering it was meant to be the Conservatives' central election offering.

The abolition of National Insurance, which went from teased pledge, to plan, to aspiration, is now "a long term ambition" that "will be the work of many parliaments". ~

My brain is still boggling over how one man can be responsible for 40% of a political parties' donations. I haven't fact checked (or remember which poster mentioned it) but surely that can't be legal? Imagine Hitler doing this from the sidelines? Surely there are electoral laws in place that limit how much one donor can donate?

Clearly not.... and as per the limits, any Govt can change the law on max donation size

"A minister said to me that they are worried that there might be peace in the Middle East and that might help Labour..."

Which shows A) why they aren't helping civilians and asking for ceasefire and B) that they are highlighting the protesters for their own political gain.

Poverty. Lack of funding. That's what would replace it, sadly.

The great thing is if a flight happens those who hate foreigners will be reminded about how much migration Sunak has permitted, and those who think that deporting people without due process to a country that is unsafe is inhumane will be abhorrent to many.

Win win for Project Sunak.

@JessS1990 I’m out of the loop and don’t know what project Sunak is associated with 👀I’m reading that as sunak is going to look like a div to most people?

Its main aim is to enrich his father in law.

IClaudine · 15/03/2024 09:37

I am just too disheartened right now to say anything. The thought of another 6/7/8 months of this is unbearable. 😥

As well as his own family unit.

Heappey standing down at the next election.

Jason118 · 15/03/2024 10:58

Putting to one side the general suffering of many of our UK's subjects (which I know is a big stretch), I'm invigorated by the popularity trends if there is an election a bit further away. The current trend is Labour steady, Refoam increasing and Conservatives decreasing. I see nothing to stop this trend, so by going long the Conservatives will be worse of come election time. Unless I'm missing some amazing policy to turn the country around that is about to be pulled from a hat. If so, it'll need to be a big hat.
