The thing is that they can't admit their donors are paying for an outcome. They are. They seem to pretend it's a kind of charity where there's no implication behind the money. That's absurd

newnamethanks · 14/03/2024 16:09

Yes, IClaudine, you are not alone. I was just pondering - given what 30pLee said about having nothing left but flogging the culture wars - whether they plan to keep up this BS until December in the hope that we will all be persuaded to hate our neighbours by then. It's bloody wearing and I've had more than enough of it but I feel you have to keep calling it out even though you feel your brain wobbling. I try to avoid getting into scraps with the Toty payroll though. If nobody responds to them maybe they'll be sacked and bugger off, you'd think they'd have enough of defending the utterly indefensible. Be awful to live with some people's thoughts.

bombastix · 14/03/2024 16:13

Culture wars cannot outweigh a persons poverty or a smaller wallet. People are naturally focussed on that. The Tory Party can indulge this stuff in Westminster because to them it looks like it matters. But it does not matter more than money to everyone else. They have had over a year to get this to work and they have made it worse.

Whereas unions who make donations to Labour are clearly only doing it to influence policy.

I honestly don't think I can stand much more of this. Do you find it starts to get you down if you spend too much time reading about it all?

I might go and listen to Keir, though. I wonder (hope) maybe him choosing today to go on LBC is a sign that we could be in for a May election?

I feel exactly the same, it’s mentally exhausting especially when you have a look at some of the threads on MN & read such awful views the total untruths vitriol & seemingly no care for fellow citizens & the defending of the indefensible it deeply saddens me, I’m so grateful for this thread as it gives some hope for our country’s future & the articulate knowledgeable posters who challenge such a lot of the inflammatory/nasty/ tripe.

itsgettingweird · 14/03/2024 17:40

A thread earlier I saw was about feeling sorry for the Tories.

I couldn't even bring myself to read anything but the OP

I'm feeling a bit better to be honest. I've been saying for ages I think the Tories are showing worrying fascist tendencies and been told (online and irl) that I'm overthinking.

Now more and more people are seeing it and calling it. Threads on here that would have got loads of right-ish responses are full of scorn for the Tories and the obvious online PR.

They are destroying themselves.

The other parties aren't following the same path. That news from Holland was excellent.

I think people are desperate for a bit of boring competence at this point. So I'm feeling quite hopeful.

pointythings · 14/03/2024 17:51

@itsgettingweird that 'sorry for the Tories' thread is actually quite encouraging. OP got a pasting and there's very little Tory support on there, except for the ubiquitous Clav.

fabio12 · 14/03/2024 17:54

Agree with how it makes everyone feel - I've been just catching up with the thread rather than looking/watching for a bit which has calmed me a bit. I think it is designed to send rational heads into a spin. I was thinking today how the press has run with the whole Kate not being "visible" and the photo issue - despite them often airbrushing pictures themselves. I think it is all part of the crazy squirrel dance - we know they are Russian owned now - and set to water down political talk for the masses.

Tories are doing the whole extremist dance because they don't like the fact every time someone is called out it happens to be one of their own or their donor. They want to be able to do the same to Labour when they get in and I still suspect will use it against Starmer somehow in the run up to elections. They've got their pay rise now so are certainly using whatever time they have left to boost their own egos and pockets. I think the Gaza situation would be very different if Trump was in US - the fact Biden has sent aid (and is possibly building a port for their oil to be siphoned off from) has them confused as Trump would probably have joined in with the bombing to get the oil...so they've held off to see which way the cookie crumbles there.

Of course, according to Lord Frost, Rishi Sunak has made the Tories too left wing

Yes when a significant proportion of voters move to the centre left, moving in the opposite direction is absolutely a winning formula. 🙄
Well done Frost. Keep going.

Brandon Lewis stepping down at the next election- which apparently won't be on May 2nd ...

"Rishi Sunak has just formally ruled out holding a general election on 2 May, the date of local elections. This is what he told ITV West: “In several weeks on May 2 we have elections on local issues, police and crime commissioners, mayors. There wont be a general election ON THAT DAY”. Curious choice of words but definitive"

So 9th May then?

cakeorwine · 14/03/2024 18:45

When I heard Gove talk about Christian forgiveness, I laughed.

I don't think Jesus would approve of this Government and their actions. I think that the story of the Good Samaritan is lost on them - and Jesus would be described as woke.

I certainly don't think this Government knows the first thing about forgiveness.

And they certainly don't follow the teachings of Christ.

tobee · 14/03/2024 18:46

What other dates are likely runners for spring?

Cornettoninja · 14/03/2024 18:46

Gove is very much the American kind of Christian. Loves Jesus and all that jazz but fuck you for being poor and get off my lawn before I shoot you.

tobee · 14/03/2024 18:49

tobee · 14/03/2024 18:46

What other dates are likely runners for spring?

Just looked at wiki for previous dates but does anyone know of reasons for or against dates in 2024?

IClaudine · 14/03/2024 18:51

😢😢😢

Cornettoninja · 14/03/2024 18:52

Starmer was quite goady(for him) on the bit of LBC I caught earlier. Very assured ‘bring it on’ when asked about a May election.

Piggywaspushed · 14/03/2024 18:57

After a rather obsessive amount of Googling, I think I have figured out that the Muslim groups named by Gove as extremist, much to their surprise have been investigated by the Henry Jackson society. Which is a fairl right wing, pro Capitalist, pro Western democracies think tank. Gove presumably loves them.

MEND already threatening legal action.

Piggywaspushed · 14/03/2024 18:59

I read some of their stuff. Niot awfully keen on their LGBTQ stuff but it's quite clear and balanced, and probably more moderate in tone than what Sex Matters produce.

The controversy seems to arise from Islamophobia Awareness Month.

AdamRyan · 14/03/2024 19:00

Mend do look a bit concerning, which means I'd be very surprised if they had any sway in government anyway.

The whole thing is so weird. Gove obviously has had his wings severely clipped because the "proposal" means nothing.

AdamRyan · 14/03/2024 19:01

I was worried by their article saying that prescribing Hizb-ut-Tahrir would be antidemocratic. HuT aren't very nice.

medianewbie · 14/03/2024 19:02

I felt really upset to hear Gove say that. His 'Christian forgiveness' trumps the lived experience of a time-served black female MP ? I think not. He clearly doesn't understand much about Christ.

DuncinToffee · 14/03/2024 19:19

Sunak confirmed it on ITV News West County, no May election

Edited to say that I am late to the party Grin,
