Gove’s “extremism” definition: I’m genuinely struggling to see how Tory asylum policy doesn’t meet (1), or how its effects on already wound-up racists don’t meet (3)

Video of Naga Munchetty interview with Gove

https://x.com/implausibleblog/status/1768206842469982676?s=20

Naga Munchetty, "Has the Conservative party spent Frank Hester's £10 million donation?"

Michael Gove deflects

Naga Munchetty, "Has the £10 million been spent?"

Michael Gove deflects again

Naga Munchetty, "Has the £10 million been spent?"

Michael Gove, 'I don't know"

Naga Munchetty, "Why don't you know, there's a row about it, you're a cabinet minister"

Michael Gove, "I'm not the Conservative party chairman.. His comments were racist, he's apologised"

Naga Munchetty, "He accepts he was rude, he didn't apologise for his comments"

Michael Gove, "I believe he has.. Forgiveness is appropriate.. While racism exists we have one of the most diverse cabinets in the western world"

Naga Munchetty, "That doesn't make the Conservative party exempt from saying it doesn't call out racism.. It took more than 24 hours to call it racism and the Conservative party have taken £10 million from someone who made racist comments"

Michael Gove, "He did make racist comments, we did call it out, and he has apologised.. I'm proud of the fact the Conservative party has a British Asian PM"

Naga Munchetty, "When Frank Hester allegedly said: I dont hate all black women at all but I do think she should be shot. Is that an extremist view?"

Michael Gove, "Speaking as someone whow as pursued by an individual who was trying to kill me.. I take that language seriously"

Naga Munchetty, "That's not what I asked. Is that an extremist view? Would it fall under these new definitions of extremism?"

Michael Gove, "I take these things seriously.. Any assessment would have to follow a rigorous process"

Naga Munchetty, "And it would be down to the government of the time of which you are part of?"

Michael Gove, "It would be down to an appropriate process that would follow independent advice"

I feel like funding the Tory party in its current form would fit no.3

Cat Neilon suggesting that the Conservatives have received another £5 million from Hester - to be disclosed in June. The Register is updated quarterly.

x.com/catneilan/status/1768249944798802320?s=46&t=Uw4lJNwxFZFnX0Xs3doHYg

Would bring his total spend to £15 million which I think would make him the largest donor by far.

Notonthestairs · 14/03/2024 13:04

Neilan!

Cornettoninja · 14/03/2024 13:09

How do they find these people

https://bylinetimes.com/2024/03/13/no-10s-preferred-anti-muslim-hatred-advisor-worked-with-anti-muslim-hate-groups-in-the-us/

Sources confirm that the Government’s new preferred option for the appointment is Haras Rafiq, the former CEO of controversial counter-extremism think-tank the Quillian Foundation. Quilliam received funding from pro-Trump Republican donors and worked with US-based anti-Muslim think-tanks that promoted the far-right ‘Great Replacement’ conspiracy theory.

Probably through things like this

The £15m would account for around 40% of the Conservatives' total general election spending limit Shock

I can see why it is a Christan duty to forgive racist commentsHmm

Michael Gove asked if GB News funder and Tory donor Paul Marshall, who liked and shared multiple far-right, Islamophobic, homophobic, conspiracy theory posts, is an extremist.

Gove says he "deplores" this "attack" on Marshall, who he describes as a "distinguished philanthropist"

I just had a lunchtime brainwave and wondered whether it was a pre-emptive deflection of criticism of Conservative foreign policy that Israels actions are justified by Hamas antisemitism.

I honestly can't see what it's about otherwise. A dogwhistle to Christian donors maybe?

I don't mind paying them more if stuff (stuff meaning improving lives, governing etc) gets done. But it's not.

newnamethanks · 14/03/2024 14:34

USA v keen on 'Christian' pronouncements. We wouldn't want to mistake our Great British Government for something that supported 'other values' would we? Not with it being so bragadociously diverse and all.

DuncinToffee · 14/03/2024 15:32

Keir Starmer will be talking to Lewis Goodall on LBC at 4pm

• Frank Hester's new pending £5m donation shows "spineless" Rishi is failing the test by "clinging on" to it
• Parties should have "standards" tests about what donations they should accept
• Refuses to say he'll let Diane Abbott back in the party - says it was an offensive letter she sent, but he won’t get involved in the decision
• Says there is snobbery in the arts against working class people - like the backlash Angela Rayner got when she went to the opera
• Vows to try and secure visa waivers for musicians after Brexit "this isn't immigration"
• Calls on PM to call an election next week

Full interview from 4pm

It's funny (not!) how the Tory's think an apology is enough.

Yes they call out Labour (rightly) for anti semitism but they would NEVER suggest an apology was enough.

They aren't even trying to pretend their isn't double standards anymore.

IClaudine · 14/03/2024 16:00

I honestly don't think I can stand much more of this. Do you find it starts to get you down if you spend too much time reading about it all?

I might go and listen to Keir, though. I wonder (hope) maybe him choosing today to go on LBC is a sign that we could be in for a May election?
