How often do you see your in-laws?

Just curious really.
Mine live about 1.5 hours away, I would say I would see them once about every three months or so.
They are both in their 80's so travelling less these days.
Hubby has just taken our little girl (3) to see them last week but I couldn't go due to work. Feels like I've missed out but can't be helped 😞

Never. They’re absolute dicks.

AdditionalCharacter · 09/03/2024 20:26

Mine are no longer here, but when they were alive, we saw them once a week pre DC, and up to 5 days a week post DC as they helped with childcare and we also visited. They lived on the next estate to us, so not far. DC loved their grandparents, they were amazing. My MIL, although stubborn and often a pain, was a caring woman and treat me better than my own mother does.

allisonsingalveston · 09/03/2024 20:26

Never mind are also dicks.
My husband takes the kids to see them once a week/every second week though 😒

Same as above, never. DH went NC with them a few years ago.

Glamorous24 · 09/03/2024 20:31

About once every 12-18 months. Which is not our choice. I’d like our DC to actually have a relationship with their grandparents but sadly in laws don’t seem that interested. Trying to make my peace with it.

LorlieS · 09/03/2024 21:54

Thanks everyone - I feel better for this ❤️

Not since January 2015...

SwordToFlamethrower · 09/03/2024 22:03

As little as possible.

Weenurse · 09/03/2024 22:06

They used to live 9 hours away so one or two times a year.
Now FIL lives with us 1 week a month and with BIL the rest of the time.

sunshineandshowers40 · 09/03/2024 22:06

In-laws live just under an hour away and we see them 1-2 times a year, it has decreased since I stopped organising meet ups. Usually Christmas and big birthdays.

LorlieS · 09/03/2024 22:08

Thing is, I really like/respect my in-laws (I think I appreciate them after my first set - ex husband - weren't great).
Just questioning if I see them enough if that makes sense?

Mine live about 7 hours drive away. We don’t have kids yet but see them:
1 week in feb, 1 week in April, 3-4 days June, 3-4 days September, sometimes for a few days in November and 4 ish days over Christmas. So probably 4 weeks of the year with us staying to them for a week when we go and them coming to us for 3-4 days seeing them on our days off e.g. down on wed afternoon, spend all day Thursday with them, dinner after work on Friday and all day sat and Sun with them

i imagine when we have kids they’ll be visiting more often

Silverumbrella · 09/03/2024 22:15

In laws live/lived 3 miles away. MIL passed away 4 years ago. Before she died we would go for dinner once a week and more when dc were little as she would look after them a few times a week.
Since mil passed away dh sees his dad once a week, I see him a few times a year.

I think it's made more challenging by the fact I'm a teacher...

What does that have to do with seeing your in laws?

mrsed1987 · 09/03/2024 22:18

Hardly ever. Last saw them in December 2022. Similar to a PP I would actually like to see them more and for them to be involved in my ds's life but clearly they don't feel the same.

Edited

Same...its so nice not having them in our lives.

LorlieS · 09/03/2024 22:18

@KCSIE Hubby prefers to take time off in term-time and go and visit then. Which I totally understand.

Saw mine today. Last time I took kids to see them was about 6 weeks ago and DH was away with work (MIL commented that it felt we haven't seen them in ages 😂)

They live about an hour away. Wouldn't want to see them more often than that.

Ahh ok. I'm a teacher too so totally don't understand why you can't see them term time. Unless you actually meant weekdays instead?

Gloriousgardener11 · 09/03/2024 22:20

I live about a 10 minute drive but see them about once a month on average.
A couple of hours and I’ve had enough!

bingoringo4 · 09/03/2024 22:20

I've two sets of inlaws see them once/twice a month. I get on with them.

TakeOnFlea · 09/03/2024 22:23

All the bloody time 🤣 they pop in and out daily. Last saw MIL 2 hours ago. Good job I love them or I'd throttle them

LorlieS · 09/03/2024 22:26

@KCSIE It's literally impossible in term time as I know you will understand being a fellow teacher. Then in the holidays everywhere is so ridiculously busy...
Yet another reason I'm looking to leave the profession after 20 years!

KCSIE · 09/03/2024 22:37

@LorlieS I burnt out a few years back taking work home at the weekends so now I don't. I check my emails at 8pm on a Sunday so I know what I'm walking in to on Monday but other than that, a weekend is a weekend.

I hope you manage to find some balance soon 🙏
