How often do you see your in-laws?

Just curious really.
Mine live about 1.5 hours away, I would say I would see them once about every three months or so.
They are both in their 80's so travelling less these days.
Hubby has just taken our little girl (3) to see them last week but I couldn't go due to work. Feels like I've missed out but can't be helped 😞

Mine live 3hrs away and we probably see them every 2-3 months for a weekend. We pretty much always travel to them, they rarely come to us.

They are, however, looking at moving somewhere 5-6hrs away so will probably see them even less.

Very rarely ,despite the not living fair. Unfortunately, they don't see my children ( their only grandchildren) very often either.
They seem to be unwell or busy a lot.

In response to a pp , dh sees them / is in contact more frequently.

When my husband was alive about three/four times a year, always at his instigation. When he passed I took the kids about two/three times shear til I moved away, then it was a couple. Of course Covid made it difficult as my MIL was very vulnerable. She's in a home now - I last saw her before Xmas for her 90th. My FIL had long passed away but my MIL 's husband I email every once in a while to catch up.

Once, sometimes twice a week. We generally always go to them but they come to us now and again. MIL might make a soup or bake a cake and she'll bring it up to us and then have a cup of tea.

They're coming up to us this afternoon for Mother's Day.

My own parents, we see maybe 4 times a year. They always come to us but this will prob change as they are late 60s, early 70s now.

As little as possible! MIL is just horrible and toxic, she really upsets our children, DH has had it all his life and I've stepped right back and we only see them when we absolutely must. MIL has a health problem now so seen her slightly more often, yep, still toxic!!

Every day ( both passed and I'm divorced) but we were gifted an house by Ex's Grandparents and was next door.
When we split l still saw them once a week because of their Grandchild.

@KCSIE I'm not sure really? Just didn't know if around 4 times a year was OK?

If you're happy with that, and your in-laws are happy with that too then what does it matter how often other people see their in-laws?!

weegiemum · 10/03/2024 17:07

MIL maybe once every 8 - 10 weeks. We're in Scotland, she's in N. Ireland so it's a bit of a trek involving a flight if she's coming here or a ferry if we go over. Our dc are adults so don't tend to go with us any more, though have gone on their own.

FIL is in a care home with advanced dementia now and doesn't know either of us at all now (last time he knew me, not dh!!). We see him 2-3 times a year (also in N.I.). It's too upsetting for the kids to visit him, as he can be quite disagreeable and sometimes violent.

We see my parents around every 6 weeks. They're a 90 minute drive away and we go to them or they come to us. We've seen them 3 times in the last 5 weeks though, just the way things worked out!

AhBiscuits · 10/03/2024 17:08

We usually spend every Saturday afternoon with them.

For those of you who never/rarely see your in-laws... how does your DH feel about this?

DH is much happier to not have them in our lives. He had a terrible childhood, and they've always been very toxic in our lives...but tolerated. Until 4 years ago where for various reasons things blew up. During this time they had multiple opportunity to make amends but never took them.
As so often happens, as our own DC have got older it made DH reflect on his childhood (which he has continued to since going NC). Not having them in our lives or our DCs is absolutely right.
