Professions you would never date after working with them

I’ll start - surgeons.

One of them told me his wife was a GP -“because only one of us (him) could have a proper career”

Also - the overriding narrative that every female who complained about their outcome or consultation had “mental health issues”. They just couldn’t conceive that anyone would complain about them.

I agree with her; I think it IS stereotyping. Are you always this patronising?

Then maybe some of these professions need to look at why so many people have really negative experiences with the people they employ.

Is it the people they pick or the culture that brings these characteristics out in people.

My industry isn’t on here. Plenty aren’t. What’s the difference?

Quantity surveyor
organic farmer
hair stylist
vicar

A QS and an organic farmer, interesting choices.
I would love to know why?

Teacher. I am one. Handy for holiday childcare, completely useless at being mentally present during term time. DH is brilliant at keeping us all fed and on track Monday-Friday, and for putting up with me ignoring him all evening to get work done.

He’s self employed though; wouldn’t recommend that in the event that someone is needed for a child at home ill. Costs a lot of money when he has to have a day off.

Bowbobobo · 09/03/2024 17:05

Artists of any description- unrealistic and self-absorbed
Police - damaged
Doctors - so so arrogant
academics - solitary and untrusting

Let’s hear it for accountants and engineers!

Timeturnerplease · 09/03/2024 17:07

Oh and I’d worry about police/military. I’ve dealt with a fair few safeguarding cases where the mental after effects of what they’ve seen in the line of duty has caused them to behave in a very damaging way to their partner/chidlren. I don’t know if this is common though, or just bad luck for those cases I’ve seen.

pinkstripeycat · 09/03/2024 17:07

I was married to a soldier for 14 years and now a police officer (same DH) for 16 years. It was tough when he went to war and so scary. Being a police officers wife has had it ups and downs but it’s been really good for many years.

Bonus is he gets to retire at 55.

Yes PTSD. DH suffered for years and was suicidal before he had counselling thorough a veterans charity

Professional footballers.

Police - bad experiences with the police in general and a couple of friends have married police officers which have ended badly for previously mentioned reasons.

Artist/photographer - just gives me the ick.

Model - think they'd be quite vein.

Zookeeper - again, gives me the ick.

Staff in the emergency housing team at the council I work alongside - they're ruthless and my values just don't align with theirs.

Redherringfish · 09/03/2024 17:12

Security services, certainly makes dating very tricky, one min your eating fish and chips, next its grab your coat taxi to hq etc

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 09/03/2024 17:12

Police, military, chef, doctor, politician, actor, singer.

I'm a teacher. Dh was a teacher for 19 years of our marriage and quit teaching a couple of years ago. Having the holidays together was great, as was the fact that we totally understood each other's jobs.

Jl2014 · 09/03/2024 17:13

Barney16 · 09/03/2024 17:14

One idiot of a surgeon doesn't mean they are all the same, that's prejudiced

Yes but they are you have to be a certain way to do that job. It’s no place for low self esteem or regard for other peoples opinions.

Doctors generally but I’m not drs wife material anyway.

I work in healthcare and have at least one wtf moment a week reading referrals.

BritAirwaysgirl · 09/03/2024 17:15

Curious re police. I can guess but real experience/feedback would be interesting. Apologies if this is not the correct place to ask this.

DungareesAndTrombones · 09/03/2024 17:15

Police officer due to being on a course with loads of them. I shouldn't generalise but they were all absolutely intolerable know it alls with loud booming voices. We had to do an exercise where we discussed our childhood career aspirations and I said I crime scene investigator (always read Patricia Cornwell) and one of them scoffed and said "believe me its not as glamorous as in the movies." Git.

Sarah2891 · 09/03/2024 17:15

Armed Forces
Abattoir worker

Startingagainandagain · 09/03/2024 17:16

Police, estate agent, army, MP, psychiatrist and IT, medical researchers that experiment on animals and any other profession that abuses animals (some framing practices, slaughterhouse workers...)

Frenchmartini02 · 09/03/2024 17:17

Police - dated one and he was a complete tw*t
Marine - all cheats
Trader - obnoxious
Window cleaner - manslags

Walkingtheplank · 09/03/2024 17:17

I came on to say Police Officer but see that quite a few people have got in first!

I actually think their workforce is quite binary between those who want to do the right thing and those who seem to be doing the job for the power trip, and usually not too bright with it.

Rosscameasdoody · 09/03/2024 17:17

Gynaecologist. Whether I’d worked with them or not. Do you know what they do all day ?

swayingpalmtree · 09/03/2024 17:17
