BBC Sounds podcast suggestions

Givemethesworrrrd · 09/03/2024 07:18

I've recently starting listening to podcasts (I know, a bit late to the party) but I was wondering if anyone has some suggestions on what to listen to.
I have recently listened to:

The great post office trial
Witchhunt
Mythical creatures
The Shamima Begum story
A few of the Our Times episodes
Uncanny

It's a bit of a mish mash selection so open to any suggestions! 🙂

Life Changing with Dr Sian Williams is another good series.

Mother87 · 10/03/2024 00:15

Radio 4 "Life Changing" podcasts were amazing! Very engaging, a huge variety of stories with different challenges...

Linnet · 10/03/2024 00:16

I listen to You’re dead to me and Lady killers
and my friend recommended Murder they wrote with Laura Whitmore and Iain Stirling. I haven’t listened to any of these ones yet but she enjoyed them so I’ll give them a try.

A history of the world in 100 objects

It's a Fair Cop

Women Talking about Cars - the Claudia Winkleman episode in particular which never fails to cheer me up.

Callmecordelia · 10/03/2024 00:25

And Natalie Haynes! How could I forget her....

BBC Sounds -Someone has already mentioned Lifechanging . Also like Untold with Grace Dent .
If you like plays I really liked Edge of Darkness , on third series . I have listened to two and on the third series now .

If I have the radio on and have caught the end of something I will go into the Sounds App and go to the live part and take a screenshot on my phone of the programme otherwise I will forget the name .

I caught the end of Short works - Stew Woman on Friday and it sounded good , so think I will check others in the series out .

I also like listening to the older episodes of desert island discs as others have said .

Finally I also like Last Word which is a radio obituary of sorts and there are usually fascinating life stories .

Hope you find something you enjoy Flowers

Seconding More Or Less, The Lovecraft Investigations, It's a Fair Cop.

I'd also recommend The Rest Is History, which isn't BBC but has a large selection of episodes on BBC Sounds for some reason.

@Dazzledee, completely agree with you there can't remember if I had added that to my list or not but it was such a good listen.
@Candleabra I started bad women, really enjoying it so far. Gives an entirely different perception of those women.

The Lovecraft Investigations are fantastic. Hands down best audio drama I've listened to and totally flies under the radar. Great cast, including the brilliant Nicola Walker.

If you like Uncanny and dramas with mystery and the unexplained, then they're right up your street.

(The Aldrich Kemp series are by the same writer & set in the same universe too.)

goldenlloyd · 10/03/2024 08:23

Good ones to dip into are Seriously (R4) and The Documentary (World Service), which scoop up recent one-off docs on all sorts of different subjects you might otherwise miss.

Givemethesworrrrd · 10/03/2024 09:26

Ive added sooo many things to my subscribed list I don't think I'll be short of things any time soon, so glad I asked for suggestions!

When it hits the fan
Paul Sinhas pub quiz
I am not a monster

Currently listening to Jackie the Ripper

Reallybadidea · 10/03/2024 09:41

Can't believe that nobody has mentioned Home Front yet! It's a drama spanning the whole of the first world war and each 15 minute episode was broadcast exactly 100 years after the events depicted.

It's the best thing I've ever listened to. I only listened to it last year and I was utterly obsessed. I recommended it to a couple of friends and they felt exactly the same. I was lost when I'd finished the whole thing.

Edited

Nicola Walker is in Aldrich Kemp too - she’s Mrs Boone.

And Phoebe Fox plays Clara Page in Aldrich Kemp and Parker in the Lovecraft Investigations.

Collywobblewobbles · 10/03/2024 09:54

@SabrinaThwaite I loved her as Mrs boone!

The same actors pop up in both series a lot - including barnaby kay who is nicola walkers husband

AsTheyPulledYouOutOfTheOxygenTent · 10/03/2024 10:50

@SabrinaThwaite @Collywobblewobbles

The other plays in the Pleasant Green universe, in particular Mythos, which introduces Mary Lairre, and Bad Memories, which introduces the Blake House and is absolutely terrifying, are all on Julian Simpson's SoundCloud webpage. Enjoy.

RomanMum · 10/03/2024 17:04

I love BBC Sounds! It's well worth looking at the Radio 4 Extra schedules as well. They're a bit of a mixed bag with some dross but also some absolute classics there. I've subscribed to (amongst many) Yes Minister, Mark Steel's in Town, And The Academy Award Goes To... (about the making of Oscar winning films) and old radio comedy shows from my yoof (Million Pound Radio Show, And Now in Colour, The Masterson Inheritance etc). The only downside is some are only up for a limited time so you need to keep an eye on their availability.

Bohemond23 · 10/03/2024 17:16

Anyone interested in business or the media would like ‘when it hits the fan’. Is presented by two media/PR guys and is about high end PR and reputation management. It is my background too and is a fascinating insight into how today’s news stories are managed.

bridgetjonesmassivepants · 10/03/2024 17:32

Can't believe there is only one other recommendation for Annika Stranded, love this one. Nicola Walker is great and each episode is self-contained.
