BBC Sounds podcast suggestions

Givemethesworrrrd · 09/03/2024 07:18

I've recently starting listening to podcasts (I know, a bit late to the party) but I was wondering if anyone has some suggestions on what to listen to.
I have recently listened to:

The great post office trial
Witchhunt
Mythical creatures
The Shamima Begum story
A few of the Our Times episodes
Uncanny

It's a bit of a mish mash selection so open to any suggestions! 🙂

A very British Cult
Lazarus Heist
Fake Heiress

@Mother87 let me know of any others you like, as we clearly have similar taste in podcasts and I'm always on the lookout for new discoveries Smile

I'll never get to sleep now! Just thought I'd have a "quick" listen to Life Changing : Harriet - What I did next
Sad/fascinating - the original "event" & the aftermath several years later...

And Atul Gawande - Ice Girl or The Girl Who Fell Through The Ice
Utterly compelling! His account of trying to save a life. This came on the radio several years ago when I was driving to an appointment. HAD to stop the car & listen to the endShock

I listen to You’re dead to me and Lady killers
and my friend recommended Murder they wrote with Laura Whitmore and Iain Stirling. I haven’t listened to any of these ones yet but she enjoyed them so I’ll give them a try.

Murder they Wrote is good, Laura and Iain (with two i's) are a excellent duo.

The crimes are generally historical, and not always a murder. I binged to catch up and now have to wait for a new one.

I use RadioNet if people are looking for suggestions of a podcast app. I downloaded what I want to listen to and then listen in the car. The auto playing the next episode can be a bit temperamental though.

I wanted to listen to that, but her voice went through me and so I had to give up. Blush

Thank you! I'll look the Atul Gawande one up - was it a Reith lecture?

Another one I loved was The Gift, about people whose lives changed forever after taking a DNA test.

Have you listened to Patricia Wiltshire on The Life Scientific? Extraordinary and riveting.

The Life Scientific - Forensic palynologist Patricia Wiltshire on using pollen to understand murder scenes - BBC Sounds

Her evidence has helped lead to convictions in many cases.

Mother87 · 10/03/2024 23:36

@Turkeyhen
Possibly a Reith Lecture - I know he did a couple
LOVE The Life Scientific & Jim Alkalele (sp?) is so warm/gentle with everyone - I'll check if I've heard that one
And the numbers/facts one More or Less (sorry if already mentioned)

Mother87 · 10/03/2024 23:41

@Turkeyhen and any debates with Michael Sandel with his moral dilemmas & ethical conundrums - the way some of the audience answer SO confidently, until he unpicks everything & they "realise" they don't really really know how they'd react at all. It's fascinating listening to people "shift"
(sorry if I'm replying wrongly with @ - not sure how it works sometimes - on opioids/heavy drugs following surgery & got this brain-fog/cognitive-battering going on)

Turkeyhen · 10/03/2024 23:55

@Mother87 so sorry to hear that, I hope you make a speedy recovery Flowers

Agree about More or Less, always so interesting, and Michael Sandel (and I'm fairly sure I haven't listened to all of his programmes so thank you for the reminder).

Sneakernomics about the development of trainer brands is great. I'd never thought I'd be interested but I was gripped.

@MeMerylSqueak Thank you so much for your recommendation. I have been listening to Sneakernomics and it's SO interesting! I am now completely fascinated by Adidas and Puma story! I had no interest in trainer brands before.

MerylSqueak · 20/03/2024 11:12

You're welcome. I was blown away by all the tactics they used against each other.
