BBC Sounds podcast suggestions

Givemethesworrrrd · 09/03/2024 07:18

I've recently starting listening to podcasts (I know, a bit late to the party) but I was wondering if anyone has some suggestions on what to listen to.
I have recently listened to:

The great post office trial
Witchhunt
Mythical creatures
The Shamima Begum story
A few of the Our Times episodes
Uncanny

It's a bit of a mish mash selection so open to any suggestions! 🙂

Not a podcast, a drama but has loads of episodes and is funny and mysterious called Curious under the stars, lovely Welsh voices, very comforting x

Sneakernomics about the development of trainer brands is great. I'd never thought I'd be interested but I was gripped.

I really like Michael Mosely's Just One Thing, although it is a tad formulaic. Comforting listening, like The Archers, or Gardener's Question Time.

Great thread! I love a podcast.

I really like Curious Cases with Rutherford and Fry (my DC like this too, we listen on car journeys)

Also echo @Elderflower14 about Desert Island Discs (as an aside, @Elderflower14 , have you read David Nott’s book, War Doctor? It’s EXCELLENT)

I also like Sideways, the original Fortunately with Jane Garvey and Fi Glover, Life Changing, The Life Scientific and The Documentary Podcast. Deeply Human is also really interesting.

I can’t rate podcasts enough: they’ve made the tedium of house work bearable.

I have it but haven't read it yet... Thanks for the reminder!!

johnworf · 09/03/2024 10:03

Thanks for some great recommendations. I'm definitely going to have a listen to some of these listed.

waltzingparrot · 09/03/2024 10:09

I've recently enjoyed

Young Again
Evil Genius
Aberfan
Real Survival Stories
Different with Nicky Campbell
Life Changing

Givemethesworrrrd · 09/03/2024 10:40

Wow, so many replies! Thank you for all the suggestions I will have a look at them.
Glad the thread was of some use to others as well, as some have pointed out it can be a bit difficult asking for suggestions but not being able to use the platforms they are on.

Not sure if these have been mentioned so far: No Such Thing as a Fish from the QI elves, Marianna in Conspiracy Land, In Our Time.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 09/03/2024 10:46

Also:

28ish Days Later - really good in depth look at the menstrual cycle
Soul Music - not everybody likes this, but I do, although obviously it helps to like the song or piece of music that's being talked about

Comforting listening, like The Archers

Grin Well, it can be comforting. It's familiar. It's also often infuriating, but I rather enjoy that. If anybody does get into The Archers, make your way to Radio Addicts here on Mumsnet and join our long-running threads discussing The Archers - allcomers welcome!

Longest running soap opera in the world, on any medium, by the way, but I exepct those who find this kind of trivia interesting already know that. It's been broadcast continuously since 1951.

Jon Ronson
The Witchtrials of JK Rowling
Louis Theroux

Oh yes, agree with all of these. Really enjoyed Ronson’s ‘Things Fell Apart’- very interesting.

CharismaticMegafauna · 09/03/2024 21:02

Think most of my favourites have been mentioned.

On BBC Sounds I've also enjoyed:

Girl Taken
The Life Scientific
Outlook
Rare Earth
From Our Own Correspondent
Reith Lectures

On Spotify:

The Retrievals
Unholy

CharismaticMegafauna · 09/03/2024 21:02

Also The Coming Storm

Papillon23 · 09/03/2024 21:07

I really enjoy Science in Action (it's a half hour distillation of the latest science news aka everything anyone ever wanted their new scientist subscription to be). The curious case of Rutherford and Fry is also excellent.

I'm also enjoying Rare Earth which is a fairly new series.

Newscast is an everyday favourite but depends how my blood pressure is doing whether or not I can cope with it (politics focused).

Dorsetlover · 09/03/2024 21:15

13 minutes to the moon. Just fab.

When it hits the fan - topical discussions!

Dorsetlover · 09/03/2024 21:16

Uncharted with Hannah Fry

Great to have a thread about BBC sounds
I don't have lots of subscriptions and use BBC mainly.
Hate it when people post suggestions and I've no idea where to find them.
I do have the free version of Pocket something but find it really hard to navigate.

I’ve just download ‘Podcasts’ app and it’s free for all the podcasts.
