I’m going to sound really daft here but I’ll explain it as best as I can 😂

ok so mumsnet use a lot of things like
DH , IMO , DC , DD , DS and OP

Surely

DH is dear husband
DC is dear child
and So on.

i don’t have a clue what all these actually mean and a lot of the time I just write DH as Dear Husband in that right?

like IMO I don’t know what that means 😂

I’ve been on here for at least 2 years!
im I the only one …. ☝️ 😂😂😂😂

There's no need to overthink it. Just write what you want, it's just an everyday chat forum!

Kinneddar · 07/03/2024 16:51

Yes you're right

Personally I hate the abbreviations and never use them. It takes about 3 seconds longer to type the actual word They can get a bit ridiculous though when you see DDog DCat etc 🙄

Sometimes DH is dickhead; you have to consider the context.

Happyandglorious98 · 07/03/2024 16:56

I don’t like using any of them! But that list I just read is pritty ridiculous!! 🤨
seems like your not part of the group if I don’t use them 😂

@BarrelOfOtters Really!!
maybe I’ve been calling my Dear husband a dickhead all along .. at Least im not lying 😂😂😂😂

IMO is in my opinion.
Another you see a lot is HTH, which is hope that helps, usually written sarcastically!
I did used to think that when people wrote TIA it was the person's name 😂but then found out its thanks in advance.

ginasevern · 07/03/2024 17:00

I think it gets a bit ridiculous sometimes. I once saw DSGS which apparently meant dear step grandson which was not obvious until you got to the very end of the post.

Rickrolypoly · 07/03/2024 17:00

I have to say the DDog and DCat just annoy me. It makes no sense- it's actually making it longer to write. Just say dog or cat. Who tf ever refers to their dog as dear dog??

Prawncow · 07/03/2024 17:01

Some are MN specific but plenty are just standard abbreviations.

Coldupnorth7 · 07/03/2024 17:01

Ha, I really like ddog and dcat. :-)

Tetchypants · 07/03/2024 17:02

I hate them and don’t use them with the occasional exception of MiL. Half the time it’s just lazy. Why not write “my mum” or dad or son for the sake of one letter! I’ll begrudgingly excuse the use of DD but only just.

Dotty2dot · 07/03/2024 17:03

It's just MN short hand really. If you don't want to use them , no one will care.

Mmhmmn · 07/03/2024 17:03

IMO - in my opinion. IME - in my experience

IYSWIM - if you see what I mean

DS - dear son

Dd - dear daughter

dsis - dear sister. DB. Dear brother.

mil - mother in law. Note lack of dear 😂

What's wrong with being lazy when writing on a chat forum?

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 07/03/2024 17:07

It came from the very early days of mumsnet, it was a lot smaller and felt like a quite familiar community and they became the accepted abbreviations, so using them was part of 'being in the club'. I don't think it matters these days whether you use them or not!

PossumintheHouse · 07/03/2024 17:08

The only one I use is OP. Bloody hate them.

Rickrolypoly · 07/03/2024 17:08

Also, when people use "DH" and then go on to describe the most useless piece of shit to ever walk the planet.

ChristianHornersGlisteningFinger · 07/03/2024 17:09

You don’t have to write Dear Husband if writing it out in full. You can just write “my husband” or “my son” instead of DS. The “D” acronyms weren’t invented by Mumsnet, they were a general internet chat forum convention which grew up because a single letter one “H”, “S” etc just looked a bit stark I think, was maybe more liable to confusion. The “D” bit is flexible in the sense that it could be genuine, or ironic if talking about something bad they have done. I guess it’s also shorthand for “my” to distinguish from someone else’s husband or child, hence the use of it with cats and dogs.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 07/03/2024 17:10

The list of acronyms is useful, tho I think / feel it misses a few of the pregnancy ones and pregnancy posts are often in the ' last hour ' so I often read them - however some of the terms I do not have a clue ( been a long long time since i was pregnant ) and feel / believe it would sometimes be inappropriate to add to the post.

I enjoy ODFOD, WTF, CF and IYSWIM.

pictoosh · 07/03/2024 17:16

Others you might see used...

OP - original poster or original post
IMHO - in my honest opinion
ODFOD - oh do fuck off dear
TLDR - too long, didn't read
PP - previous poster

pictoosh · 07/03/2024 17:16

CF - cheeky fucker

pictoosh · 07/03/2024 17:17

TAAT - thread about a thread
