I’m going to sound really daft here but I’ll explain it as best as I can 😂

ok so mumsnet use a lot of things like
DH , IMO , DC , DD , DS and OP

Surely

DH is dear husband
DC is dear child
and So on.

i don’t have a clue what all these actually mean and a lot of the time I just write DH as Dear Husband in that right?

like IMO I don’t know what that means 😂

I’ve been on here for at least 2 years!
im I the only one …. ☝️ 😂😂😂😂

OP posts:
Kjones27 · 07/03/2024 17:18

Dd is dear daughter.

So what is dear dad?

DrJoanAllenby · 07/03/2024 17:21

I hate the abbreviations.

I get DS confused with sister or son!

Aquamarine1029 · 07/03/2024 17:21

I absolutely hate the abbreviations.

I don't like them as a two letter abbreviation is confusing.

Dd is usually dear daughter. But I saw someone use dd for dear dad.

Dotty2dot · 07/03/2024 17:28

RTFT ,read the fucking thread. Or read the full thread for the prim.

pictoosh · 07/03/2024 17:31

TTC - trying to conceive

For the schoolophiles...

HT - headteacher
HOY - head of year
TA - teaching assistant

pictoosh · 07/03/2024 17:32

Dear dad is usually DF - dear father

GN637 · 07/03/2024 17:40

I find myself using "the dc" when holding conversations in my head with people. That's when I know I've spent too much time on here and need to read a book. Took me a while to figure them out and there's still some I don't know. Off to click on pp's link.

It came from the very early days of mumsnet, it was a lot smaller and felt like a quite familiar community and they became the accepted abbreviations, so using them was part of 'being in the club'. I don't think it matters these days whether you use them or not!

I was just going to say this. Back then it was quite unusual to abbreviate so much and we all did it.

I imagine it maybe the older members that do this without even thinking, I know I do.

Izzabellasasperella · 07/03/2024 17:46

DF annoys me because I've seen it used for dear father, dear fiancé and dear friend which can be confusing.
I thought HTH meant happy to help.

Happyandglorious98 · 07/03/2024 17:50

I’ve read most of these comments I’m now even more confused 😕

think it’s the fact that for Example DS
could be dear son or dear sister etc

think i will stick to what i know best and use the proper words what is OP i thought it meant original poster? 😂

OP posts:
Kjones27 · 07/03/2024 17:52

I've never once written any of the abbreviations now I think of it. I just my mum , my dad. Etc

TheMessiahIsMySister · 07/03/2024 17:54

Rickrolypoly · 07/03/2024 17:08

Also, when people use "DH" and then go on to describe the most useless piece of shit to ever walk the planet.

Right? I always deliberately reply to those posts with ‘husband’.

Take or leave them.

Ddog and Dcat are ridiculous. Even auto-correct doesn’t like them.

donteatthedaisies0 · 07/03/2024 17:58

I never use them either as I can't bothered . Some times it can cause confusion between sister and son and fiance and friend . I just don't bother . 🤷🏻‍♀️

I thought I explained it quite well? What is still confusing you?

Dear dad is usually DF - dear father

I always thought DF was dear fiancé

HelpMeGetThrough · 07/03/2024 18:26

mil - mother in law. Note lack of dear 😂

Surely it's mol and fol as they are the outlaws. 🤷‍♂️

Yes, OP does mean “original poster”. That is not Mumsnet-specific. Here it is in the glossary that was linked on the first page if this thread. As they say, can also be “Original post”.

I’m going sound really daft here but …
pictoosh · 07/03/2024 18:44

PFB - precious first born

Georgyporky · 07/03/2024 19:02

It took me a while to realise that "CF" was not a typo for "FC" - as in fucking cunt.

It's the phrases that irritate me, e.g. "wearing judgey pants", "give your head a wobble". Complete drivel.

HoorayFriday · 07/03/2024 19:02

Rickrolypoly · 07/03/2024 17:08

Kinneddar · 07/03/2024 16:51

Yes you're right

Personally I hate the abbreviations and never use them. It takes about 3 seconds longer to type the actual word They can get a bit ridiculous though when you see DDog DCat etc 🙄

Ahhh typed with love though.

My favourite is DH when he’s actually anything but!

I think TLDR is rude, especially if they’ve gone on to comment. If you can’t be bothered to read it, scroll by.

Icantbedoingwithit · 07/03/2024 19:07

I hate them!!

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 07/03/2024 20:45

I hated them initially but find myself using them more over time.

For ages, I assumed HTH meant Hit The Hay. Genuinely thought posters meant, sleep on it, rethink it in the morning, get some rest. It seemed to make sense in most cases.
