The most picturesque place you have ever been in Europe?

Where is your most memorable place specifically for nice views and/or architecture?

Looking for somewhere special for either a few days or a week in June or July?

Has anywhere ever blown you away?

Florence and Siena but both a bit hot for me in summer. Up in mountains in Germany or Switzerland is lovely but then so is the Lake District

CheshireCat1 · 07/03/2024 09:15

West coast of Scotland and Tuscany.

Gaudi’s architecture in Barcelona, especially Casa Batllo - mesmerisingly beautiful!!

Totally agree.

MandyMotherOfBrian · 07/03/2024 09:21

Lake Bled - specifically in winter when it’s all frozen and snowy.

Watermelon999 · 07/03/2024 09:23

Thanks for all the great replies and fantastic ideas.

I agree with Rome, Barcelona, Iceland, Lake District, Venice, and now have many more places to look at! (Maybe too many!!)

@TakeOnFlea I was looking into Innsbruck this summer. Do you have a recommendation of where to stay at all? It's so different to what I usually book, it's hard to know where or what sort of accommodation.

LaviniasBigBloomers · 07/03/2024 09:24

Venice - I cried like a child the first time I saw the Grand Canal, I think I thought people had been making it up.

But actually, my top tip is anywhere that isn't built around the needs of drivers. Bergamo has been mentioned, Seville Old Town is similar, I adore Malaga too. I remember having drinks there with a friend and we realised the reason we loved the place so much was lack of cars/broad roads, and that's now been one of my criteria for weekends away.

Notstrongandstable · 07/03/2024 09:28

Annecy. The town is lovely and of course the lake is stunning

takemeawayagain · 07/03/2024 09:33

Santorini is absolutely stunning - but go very early in the season before it gets over run. You can't go wrong with Italy generally I don't think. Lake Carezza is tiny but blew my mind - but there are so many beautiful options all through the country.

The Cies Isles are my top pick though. Rodas beach is to die for.

Crikeyalmighty · 07/03/2024 09:39

@LaviniasBigBloomers Malaga is hugely under rated- very lovely old town, really cheerful!

RedRum27 · 07/03/2024 09:39

Venice, have been in October and May. Perfect weather, less crowds and stunning. Many little back roads to get lost in with tiny bars perfect for a spritz and it’s completely silent, you would forget you’re in a major tourist destination. Take a trip to Burano for the most beautiful coloured houses.

Anywhere in Tuscany such as Siena or San Gimignano. Again just beautiful.

Crikeyalmighty · 07/03/2024 09:45

I would agree with Istanbul too - fascinating place , a real east meets west with great food

I didn't like Venice at all- looks great but an enormous rip off

millymoo1202 · 07/03/2024 09:45

San Gigamano in Tuscany absolutely stunning, we stumbled upon heading to Florence

Lifeinlists · 07/03/2024 09:47

Papillon23 · 07/03/2024 07:07

Lake Como was stunning. We didn't stay in the most touristy part, which I think I'm glad about. This was a couple of miles walk from where we stayed.

Thanks for that pic @Papillon23 because we're planning a trip to the Italian Lakes this autumn and that's more than whetted my appetite.

We went alongside on the train from Zurich to Milan (highly recommended spectacular journey) and I just knew we had to go there properly.

TheNoonBell · 07/03/2024 09:56

Bosnia, unspoilt mountain wildernesses and amazing blue rivers.

Quizine · 07/03/2024 10:02

Wild Atlantic Way in Ireland. OMG. The roads can be very narrow in places though, but the scenery - breathtaking.

The Italian lakes, all of the main ones, but particularly Lake Garda viewed from the (local) boats departing from Riva del Garda that have multiple stops in gorgeous spots like Limone, Malcesine, and Sirmione. Stunning.

The drive over the Pyrenees from Carcassonne to Puigcerda in Spain (taking in Andorra too). Another catch your breath journey.

LittleSparklyStar · 07/03/2024 10:03

Venice, I’ve never seen anywhere else quite like it. It is the most magical place in the world!

Movinghouseatlast · 07/03/2024 10:23

Venice is the most beautiful place I have been. It also has it all because you can easily get to a beach!

Prague is fab, so much amazing architecture all in one place.

The Amalfi coast is stunningly beautiful but very busy in summer I would imagine.

Paxos is the most beautiful Greek island I've been to, particularly Loggos.

St Ives really is gorgeous, it's just hard to see it through the hordes of people!

Itsokay2020 · 07/03/2024 10:35

In no particular order, Warsaw, Prague and Stockholm are wonderful cities to explore.

Not sure what it will be like in June, but the snow covered sight of Monte Lussari (Tarvisio, Italy) as you get off the gondola took my breath away, a wow moment that I will never forget!

Not read the thread yet, but in order:

  1. Northern bit of Lake Garda, by Riva del Garda.
  2. Lake Lugano - around Swiss/italian border.
  3. Connemara.

Can you tell I like lakes and mountains??

HauntedBungalow · 07/03/2024 10:48

Anacapri, especially the views from Villa San Michele. Everything is blue - sea, sky, air, and you are in it, perched in the clear high light, looking right across the bay of Naples. Incredible place.

Also Seville, gorgeous place.

And Venice ofc.

MrsSkylerWhite · 07/03/2024 10:48

Rothenburg, I think.

newtb · 07/03/2024 10:52

The gorges du Verdon in southern France. There's a route around thé South side and the North side. Thé water is so incredibly blue.

brytersky · 07/03/2024 11:01

Bavaria, but I can't remember the name of the mountain. It had a cable car and a nice restaurant at the top. The houses in the village below were all painted with pretty frescos and a brass band were playing on the train station platform.
