Where is your most memorable place specifically for nice views and/or architecture?

Looking for somewhere special for either a few days or a week in June or July?

Has anywhere ever blown you away?

Was blown away by the Bay of Kotor in Montenegro. Pictures don’t do the landscape justice.

Granada and the Alhambra & Generalif came a pretty close second to Venice, I must admit.

I wasn't at all struck by Grenada or the Alhambra (in terms of stunningly beautiful - sure it's nice but best in Europe?)

Austria for me.

Specifically Mayrhofen and the surrounding area. Absolutely stunningly beautiful.

Very different vibes depending on the country. Tuscany in Italy is amazing (San Gimignano, Volterra, Sienna). Venice of course.

An off the beaten path tip is Merano in South Tyrol, a combination of Italian and Austrian culture with alpine scenery but mediterranean vibes with palm trees etc. Very unique.

Agree with Hallstatt in Austria however it's very small so you want to combine it with Salzburg or Munich. Vienna is stunning but on the eastern side of Austria so you won't get any of the mountain scenery (it's 4-5 hours by car to the nearest alpine area).

Switzerland is incredible, arguably more beautiful than Austria or Italy for mountain landscapes. But very expensive and not that easy to get around due to the mountain ranges. You need to plan well with train times or rent a car. Driving times can be much longer than they appear on the map. Try St Morirtz or Gstaad.

A different type of Europe is Croatia or Scandanavia if you like coastal scenery. Lots of little islands, boat rides, sailing etc.

Cinque Terre in Italy

Lake Como was stunning. We didn't stay in the most touristy part, which I think I'm glad about. This was a couple of miles walk from where we stayed.

That's a very difficult question! I can't decide what my favourite 'nature' view is but in terms of cities, the one that first springs to mind is the view of Florence from the Piazzale Michelangelo as the sun was setting. I shed a tear or two!

I adored Merano, one of my favourite holidays.

Sicily had some amazing sights.

Lake Bled is beautiful too.

The Alps in summer is wonderful

Yes. The first memory that sprang to mind was cycling in the Austrian Tyrol. The weather was just stunning and I had to just stop and LOOK as it was as if I was riding into a postcard.

Other stop and look moments include Cefalu in Sicily and Venice.

Maureenthemagicunicorn · 07/03/2024 09:10

I'd second Cesky Krumlov and other historic Czech towns, and the Alps in summer. The Eibsee/Zugspitze area is lovely. We stayed in Grainau, the nearest village to Eibsee, you can take a little train to it and the Zugspitze cablecar.
Other Alps places - Lauterbrunnen valley, inspired Rivendell in Lord of the Rings. Absolutely stunning, huge snowy mountains at the end and next door to the Grindelwald valley with the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau towering over it. We stayed in Wengen halfway up the side of the valley, the view was incredible. A cute mountain railway goes up and over the ridge between the valleys.
Oeschinensee near Kandersteg - 2km high rock face rising from a bright blue lake.
The Dolomites - we stayed in Ortisei, can reach loads by cablecar.
The best scenery we saw was at Cinque Torri - a long daytrip from Ortisei but worth it. Close to Cortina d'Ampezzo.

Would like to go to Segovia, it looks like something out of a fairytale.

I really want to go to Corsica for the river swimming in deep limestone gorges - it looks out of this world. Also the South of France for the same reason - the rivers Tarn, Ardeche, Ceze and Gard.
