What ambitions task has your child/ren set you this year for world book day?

DD has asked to be the tail of the whale 👍 thank you Julia Donaldson. A large bit of grey felt should suffice?

We've got it easy this year he's going as Jeremy Clarkson

ALLthecheeses · 05/03/2024 17:55

I always set my kids the task of finding a suitable costume from the dressing up box/their wardrobe. I normally have to buy/find a few random accessories.

DinnaeFashYersel · 05/03/2024 18:05

Take a photo of child reading a book in a strange place.

And dress up

Last WBD for us 🎉🎉🎉 as youngest goes to high school this year

ScouseOfCards · 05/03/2024 18:09

I don't take requests! DDs will be finding things out of the dressing up box to go as and I'll think of a book to match.

DD1 has a cow print onesie that she wears after swimming lessons so she'll probably go wearing that. There must be a book with a cow in it! 🤣

DD2 has a Elsa from Frozen dress so she can go as a fairytale princess.

Mine wants to be a sith lord. I'm fully behind this for a number of reasons.

The school stipulated no super heroes. Ds quickly pointed out the loophole of 'that doesn't say no super VILLIANS'

There are multitudes of star wars books, most with lots of chapters and few /no pictures. Some even well written

It's an easy and very cheap costume to knock up. Black long sleeve hoody, over sized black to shirt over the top (which I will end up sleeping in), black belt with a toy red lightsaber tucked in, black skinny jeans and black shoes. Bit of makeup to fake a gnarly eye scar

DS1 despises dressing up but amazingly is up for going as Steve Backshall (he’s a TV person but we’ll take his book with him to prove it 😄) and DS2 going as Harry Potter.

Bunny from Bunny Vs Monkey. Needless to say you can't buy it, and it is hard to dress as a cartoon bunny - I had to decapitate a snowman onesie for the body 😔

I don’t know how old your child is but - Click, Clack Moo! Cows that type! Is a book.
what the ladybird heard has a cow in it also.

Sharon the party crow from grimwood. I've sewn blank feathers onto an old hoody, and we've made a party hat and mobile disco (drawn a boom box onto cardboard). Job done.

AWOOGA!

I think she'll be shouting Awooga all day!

Smartiepants79 · 05/03/2024 18:45

My 11 year old is the white rabbit from Alice. Her friends are doing other characters.
The eldest is 13 and her and her friends are doing the characters from Percy Jackson.
They go to an all girls school and book day dress up is a big thing right through to sixth form. I think it’s kinda sweet.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 05/03/2024 18:46

Our school is thankfully not doing dressing up for World “book that’s been made into a film” day , however we do have to decorate a potato to be a character from a book.

we are reading Kay’s anatomy at the moment so our potato is a labelled brain, with cocktail stick label flags. It’s probably my best bit of homework yet. 🙄

DelurkingAJ · 05/03/2024 18:46

Member of the Secret Seven (one evacuee outfit plus a badge I made) and cricketer from one of his many many cricket book in his whites. Phew!

muckymayhem · 05/03/2024 18:49

Thank goodness - the same as last year! Best news everGrin

AlltheFs · 05/03/2024 18:51

My DM works in a charity shop and gives us all sorts of costume treasures. Latest is a fabulous dragon ensemble for 50p so DD has asked to go as Zog. Absolutely zero effort required. Phew!

britespark1 · 05/03/2024 18:51

Mine thankfully is going as a muggle this year aka wearing whatever own clothes he wants 😂

Merrow · 05/03/2024 18:53

Our school is doing a pyjama day instead, just as I'd thought up a really simple elephant and piggy costume!

YouAndMeAndThem · 05/03/2024 18:57

Our Primary School aren't doing dressing up thank goodness! They're being very respectful to those who can't afford it.

Instead they're having a PJ party and book swap which I think is lovely!

Anxietysux · 05/03/2024 19:13

Pj day at my kids school too

Goneback2school · 05/03/2024 19:14

Dd going as pippi longstockings with an odd mix of her own clothes, just have to get pipe cleaners to try get her hair into the style. Ds going as pre magic Harry potter ie just wearing his own clothes.

mrssunshinexxx · 05/03/2024 19:19

Princess pearl from
Zog

HideTheCroissants · 05/03/2024 19:26

My school doesn’t do dress up day. We usually ask the children to MAKE something to represent their choice of book. Eg A Golden Ticket, a Wizard Wand, a Witches Hat, a Treasure Map….
The “best” get prizes … things clearly made by parents NEVER win!

menopausalmare · 05/03/2024 19:29

Sophie, from the tiger who came to tea. So once again I'm painting chequers onto leggings (she out grew the tights I painted two years ago).
