What ambitions task has your child/ren set you this year for world book day?

DD has asked to be the tail of the whale 👍 thank you Julia Donaldson. A large bit of grey felt should suffice?

@Bobskeleton I think you can agree this is a work of (potato) art

Zephyry · 05/03/2024 19:34

Mr Jelly from Mr Men

Lovelydovey · 05/03/2024 19:42

Ds in year 7 has just announced that they are dressing up on Thursday. He doesn't normally go to school on Thursdays but apparently wants to go in for this. We're negotiating now on simple costumes that we can have ready for then. Possibly Bart Simpson as he has a load of Simpsons comic books if I can get yellow face paint in time.

AliasGrape · 05/03/2024 19:52

PJ day and book swap at our school nursery (well across the school actually) too.

Optional decorate a potato and ‘extreme reading’ photo competition. Our potato is much less impressive - it’s meant to be a ladybird but DH saw it and said ‘ooh a strawberry - which book is that?’

Ratfinkstinkypink · 05/03/2024 19:54

It's our first WBD and I have opted for Stan from we're Going on a Bear Hunt. I think he likes that story (but I can't ask him as he is non-verbal and is still at around 12 months cognitively) and I have the clothing that the character wears already and the costume will fit inside the confines of his wheelchair without making him feel uncomfortable. School have said they can also wear PJs if they want to as all the best story times happen when you are comfy and in PJs.

elliejjtiny · 05/03/2024 19:55

ds1 is at college and they don't do it.
Ds2 doesn't want to dress up so he is going in his school uniform and saying his book is the school prospectus.
Ds3 is going as the demon headmaster in a lab coat (that we already have) and sunglasses
Ds4 is going as a character from star trek (already got that costume too)
Ds5 is going as one of the children from the demon headmaster so he is wearing jeans and t-shirt with a checked shirt over the top with the buttons undone as that's what most boys wore in the mid 1990's.

ColleenDonaghy · 05/03/2024 19:57

Nothing! Last year DD's class just did a book swap, and this year they've decided on activities that require zero parental input. 🥳🥳🥳

Love that! It demonstrates a real enjoyment of reading, which is what it's supposed to be about.

scrivette · 05/03/2024 20:19

DS is going as Oliver Twist as he loves the film and we are going to the theatre to see it next month. He hasn't actually read the book so I found a synopsis of it online that he is read so I think that's good enough!

DS' best friend is going as a famous footballer as he has a football annual with him in it - very easy!

FoFanta · 05/03/2024 20:22

My daughter and her friend have written their own book and the two main characters are dressed in jeans and puffer coats exactly like the ones they already have 😁. Their characters are called Puff and Puffy and they have written (and illustrated) the whole thing.

They love a joint costume - at Halloween they went as two sides of an avocado that they made and painted themselves.

Mine wants to be a sith lord. I'm fully behind this for a number of reasons.

The school stipulated no super heroes. Ds quickly pointed out the loophole of 'that doesn't say no super VILLIANS'

There are multitudes of star wars books, most with lots of chapters and few /no pictures. Some even well written

It's an easy and very cheap costume to knock up. Black long sleeve hoody, over sized black to shirt over the top (which I will end up sleeping in), black belt with a toy red lightsaber tucked in, black skinny jeans and black shoes. Bit of makeup to fake a gnarly eye scar

This is infuriating, comic books are still books!

TastyTakoyaki · 05/03/2024 20:25

Matilda and Zog in my house.

Matilda is easy, for Zog we made a mask and tail.

Colinfromaccounts24 · 05/03/2024 20:25

Mine is going as Amelia Fang. We’ve mainly been able to reuse Halloween stuff. She’s also had to create a scene from a favourite book in a jar, and they are having a 2nd hand book sale. We did the potato thing a couple of years ago. We very imaginatively did Supertato.

Clarebelle878 · 05/03/2024 20:27

The wizard lizard from superworm.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 05/03/2024 18:41

Bunny from Bunny Vs Monkey. Needless to say you can't buy it, and it is hard to dress as a cartoon bunny - I had to decapitate a snowman onesie for the body 😔

I've got a bunny Vs monkey too! A plain white T-shirt, bunny ears, inflatable monkey and I may fashion some bunny features out of eye liner!

girlyjim · 05/03/2024 20:31

Our first WBD and DS is going as Burglar Bill. I've bought a black and white stripy tshirt, eye mask and a flat cap. Already has joggers and a black hoody. He's very excited and so am I☺️his school is doing a book swap as well which is the harder part, he doesn't like giving anything away even if he will get one in return.

BabyBunnyMama · 05/03/2024 20:32

My 4 year old DD's first WBD this year, she's going as the butterfly from the very hungry caterpillar. DS is only 2 so not celebrating it with dressing up in his nursery but I've got him the caterpillar costume to match her so he doesn't feel left out (and I can take cute photos) 😆

BarbaraVineFan · 05/03/2024 20:35

Mine is going as Hairy Maclary. Black trousers, black fuzzy jumper, tail and doggy nose on an elastic band.

blackteaplease · 05/03/2024 20:39

Ds2 is going as kid normal (jeans, trainers and a red&white striped t shirt)

Ds2 can't decide. He's never been much into fancy dress but has done wbd most years. Last year he went in normal uniform and this year he's not bothered either. I may float the muggle idea pp posted earlier. His class are doing harry potter in English at the moment.

BlueSoul · 05/03/2024 20:56

DS is going as 'The Boy who grew dragons'. We've made a little dragon fruit tree and he is taking a box with a toy dragon in it and various other dragons (one he can put around his wrist, one to poke out of his bag etc.... He will wear a green jumper and white polo top as per the picture of the character in the book.

yoshiblue · 05/03/2024 21:12

We're Yr 5 now so the dressing up is toning down. Hes going as a Jedi (we already have a Jedi robe and light saber) plus 'The Jedi Way' book.

I'm happy as zero effort and better for the environment.

Last couple of years have been quite easy, going as Terry from 13 Storey Treehouse and Charlie Bucket with a golden ticket.

Stompythedinosaur · 05/03/2024 21:30

I've got a Cherry (from the Chocolate Box Girls) and Pippin (from Lord of the Rings). Year 8 and Year 6, so I figure I don't have many years of constructing costumes left now.

2under4 · 05/03/2024 22:05

If I had my time again, I'd do the mum in "An Illustrated Mum".

DS's nursery, they're supposed to go in pjs (like it's story / bedtime?).
