Bit of fun....how old is your oldest towel?

I've towels we got as a house warming gift in 1999 and they're still going strong.

I don't know how old they are; they weren't new when my mum gave them to me when I moved into my first flat 20 years ago. They're faded and are a bit frayed around the edges but otherwise still in good nick and are used all the time.

On a related note - as pillowcases have been mentioned - I have a feather pillow that belonged to my great grandmother. She was born in 1890 summat, so assuming it was a wedding present, it'll be 100+ years old. It's one of our best pillows. (Our Christmas tree fairy is getting on for 100 too).

ehb102 · 04/03/2024 17:26

1976

I have the white towel my parents used to wrap me in. My dad gave it to me when I had my baby. I didn't use it for my kid apart from a couple of times because it is thin and worn but it is quite good as a hair towel for me now. So that is 48 years old this year.

I have lots of newer towels, like the ones from my wedding nearly 20 years ago 😂

IggOrEgg · 04/03/2024 17:30

My oldest is one I bought the first time I went to NZ to work, so 10/11 years old (I’m 29 now). Bit rubbish compared to some on here, but I know my GM still has towels (and bedding I believe) she was given as wedding gifts in the 50s 😂

LegArmpits · 04/03/2024 17:34

I read that as "trowel" and I thought how many trowels do people own!?

Oldraver · 04/03/2024 18:49

I worked on a bedding stall aged 14 in 1979 and bought a bath sheet (M&S second) as my Dad was possessive over the only bath sheet

I tend to use it for swimming now as it is very thin and threadbare in places but folds small

So, 45 years old

We had our bathroom done up in the early 90s, then I took one of the 'new' towels to uni with me in 2001. I still have it! It's scratchy and thin and lovely Grin. It does have a few holes and mum gave me permission to throw it away last time she visited lol.

Pennina · 04/03/2024 18:56

I have a very thin hand towel from the early 60s! I remember it being in the bathroom when I was little.

Our towels are all fairly old I think.

Those people replacing the all every few years - why?

I'm now wondering about getting my teens a nice towel each so they can have one they "remember" like some on here have! Where do people get towels? Supermarket?

What a nice idea 😊 These.

I have three John Lewis towels from 1985.

Theoldcuriosityshop · 04/03/2024 19:23

My oldest towel was my grandmothers. She died in 1976 so it's over 50 years old as she'd had it a fair while.

caringcarer · 04/03/2024 19:24

I have a towel my Mum sewed all of my swimming badges on when I was a kid and somehow it sits in the back of a cupboard never being used but I haven't thrown it out because my Mum's dead now and I think of her sitting in her chair in the evening sewing on all the badges.

Canthave2manycats · 04/03/2024 19:29

Towels I bought in Harrods in 1988/9. They eventually became swimming towels.

I also bought all the children Christy towels with little animal and teddy bears etc on them. Kids are in their 20s and the towels are still in good shape!

Fifthtimelucky · 04/03/2024 19:32

I have one that I had in 1979 and it may be a couple of years older. But that probably doesn't count as it only gets used for wet cats now.

Thighdentitycrisis · 04/03/2024 19:32

Circa 1984 and it was a cheap one then! Relegated to dog now.

I also have towels from early nineties bought at M and S the quality is great

BloodyAdultDC · 04/03/2024 19:34

I'm still using old terry nappies for floor cloths from 2003.

I have a linen tea towel from 1977 that is in regular use, it's got all sorts of women's institute recipes on it that are barely legible!

Clevs · 04/03/2024 19:45

I've got a couple of plain white towels that my mum bought when my brother was born in 1967.

I also have two white cotton pillowcases that were a wedding present for my Nan & Grandpa in the 1940's.

The towels and pillowcases are both still going strong and are still whiter than white. They don't make them like they used to!

MrsElsa · 04/03/2024 19:49

One of my grandma's . I don't remember why I have this just one but it's still going strong, the thickest and fluffiest I have! Would guess it's from the 80s maybe earlier. Just can't find any half as good on the high Street. Been through 2 lots of Tesco towels in 10 years, they go all thin and flat. Tried Dunelm but no better! Second best is a set I got in a German supermarket in around 2004!

Runningwildish · 04/03/2024 19:55

40 years, dd has it now it's a hand towel in her loo. To be fair it wasn't used regularly for several decades as it was my'best' towel.

Hatty65 · 04/03/2024 20:04

I've not read the whole thread but I'm pretty sure I've won.

I've got a bath towel that has my (deceased) Aunt's name label sewn into it. My mother gave it to me when I left home and said 'It was one that Auntie Margaret took when she went away to Uni'.

Aunt was born in 1930, so this towel would be from 1948. It's still going strong. I suspect it was expensive when they bought it.

Bbq1 · 04/03/2024 20:23

25+

SneakySnakeEx · 04/03/2024 20:31

Bathroom ones 4 months, i replace semi often as always manage to bleach or stain them. I then pass old ones to dog shelter. Or use in pool

Beach ones 20 years. Seldom used.

LimoncelloSpritz · 04/03/2024 20:33

I've got towels from my first wedding in 1992, and am now slightly horrified at how long ago that was!

xSideshowAuntSallyx · 04/03/2024 20:55

1981 my Dad brought it back from a posting overseas. I use it very rarely but it's too special to throw away.

Dearg · 04/03/2024 21:00

About 1982. Bought for my first home away from my parents. To be fair, it’s a dog towel these days, but mainly because it’s a bath towel, and DH & I are large enough for bath sheets these days 😳
