I've towels we got as a house warming gift in 1999 and they're still going strong.

I have 2 from a set bought for uni in 1997 from a market stall in Newcastle. They are still going strong with no holes!

LlynTegid · 04/03/2024 07:39

I'm sure I've still got some from my first house in the mid 80s.

Have a christening spoon from 1867, so the towels are positive modern!

Tlolljs · 04/03/2024 07:39

1980 wedding present. Marriage is over towels are still going strong. Marks and Spencer

doppelgangermirror · 04/03/2024 07:39

DS is currently using my Snoopy beach towel as his swimming towel - probably bought in around 1990.

I also have a couple of hand towels I use a gym towels that I bought when I went into a house in the second year of uni - so from 1997.

Mybestusername · 04/03/2024 07:42

A bath sheet from M&S that my daughter uses which my mum bought me when I left home in 1992

Walkingwashingmachine · 04/03/2024 07:42

I have a beach towel I still use that I got free with a bottle of Polo..it says POLO RALPH LAUREN 1997 on it, so I will always know its birthday.

CeriB82 · 04/03/2024 07:44

22.bought it in mothercare when dd was born. Its grey now and rough but dries brilliantly. Bought new ones few weeks ago and no one uses them. DD said they’re too soft!

HoneyBee1973 · 04/03/2024 07:48

As a rugby tour "prank", my Dad nicked a towel from a hotel in 1973, the year I was born. It came with me to uni, a move to America and back. It is threadbare, ripped and has a thread fringe all the way around but I can't let it go. He passed away unexpectedly last summer and I've been holding on to the towel like a security blanket. ❤️

We have the towel my BIL took to prep school when he was 7. It's name tagged. So that would have been about 1967. I use it in the cat basket when we take the cats to the vet.

SirWalterElliot · 04/03/2024 07:55

Apx 35 years old, although looking at some of these answers we are mere towel-hoarding rookies.

reluctantbrit · 04/03/2024 08:02

35 years I think. I got a beach towel the last Summer holiday with my parents and I still pack it whenever we go on a pool/beach holiday.

johnworf · 04/03/2024 08:14

My oldest will be 40 in October. It was one of our wedding presents. It's lasted much longer than our marriage did.

takemeawayagain · 04/03/2024 08:48

We have 20 year old towels that were my mums 'old' ones before that. I don't like how soft and non absorbent a lot of towels seem to be, these old ones are perfect.

mydogisthebest · 04/03/2024 08:55

I also wonder why some people replace their towels every few years.

We bought all new towels in 1999 from Tesco and Primark and they are still going strong. One bath sheet is getting a bit threadbare but all the others are fine.

EndlesslyDistracted · 04/03/2024 08:58

Mid 1970s. My parents had some handtowels which mum tried to dye a different colour when they moved house to the new bathroom colour scheme (avocado). It didn't really work and they came out sort of mustard yellow. I pinched one of them at some stage for when I was henna-ing my hair, I keep it now for things like catching all the water when I clean the washing machine filter.

The oldest I've bought myself are probably mid 1990s when I bought my first house, they are a bit threadbare now but still do the job and fold up small for beach towels. My swimming towel is a novelty one I bought at a motorway services on the way to a holiday also in the 1990s.

turkeyboots · 04/03/2024 08:58

My oldest is from 1984. A gift from my friend after her holiday when I was 5. Not in use anymore but it's in the house!
My oldest towel in use is from 2005.

judgementfail · 04/03/2024 09:01

I've a bath towel and hand towel I went to university with in 1993. This is the third country it's lived in and it's travelled over 30'000 miles.

judgementfail · 04/03/2024 09:04

Beach towels used in Marbella once in a blue moon don't count!

BigMamaFratelli · 04/03/2024 09:05

I use the towel my gran used to dry my mum with when she was a baby as my hair towel. My mum was born in 1952! Dries brilliantly

Catname · 04/03/2024 09:23

I don’t have any towels bought post 2009 but that final set of 4 bath sheets and 6 hand towels have been in constant rotation in the en-suite since. I’ve also got a set of 6 hand towels I use in the cloakroom and utility room that were bought in 1996. Plus copious towels that are only used for guests but they are all pre 2009 and mostly from the 1980’s.

I assume no kids, no fabric softener, and very limited tumble drying (10 mins just before they are fully dry) have contributed to remaining soft and fluffy in spite of their age.

Needapadlockonmyfridge · 04/03/2024 09:25

I am still using some I bought in the 1980s...

I did have a big clear out recently and some I remember from my own childhood have now been demoted to dog towel status.

Needapadlockonmyfridge · 04/03/2024 09:27

^^ I don't use fabric conditioner, and don't tumble dry either, wonder if that helps prolong towel life?

VoluptuaSneezelips · 04/03/2024 09:33

It's a velour one with roses on, it belonged to a friend of my parents. Apparently he got it on holidays as a gift for his mum and was showing my mum but I took such a shine to it he ended up giving it to me - i was only about a year old. Im 45 this year.

BarrelOfOtters · 04/03/2024 09:34

35 years old, it's a dog towel now, inherited from husband's previous marriage.

Our towels, must be 15 or so....still going strong, nice and exfoliation friendly.

Iamnotawinp · 04/03/2024 09:57

Mine is 26 years old but my Dd has it now.

When she was born a French friend gave me a really big fluffy towel which had a teddy bear and her name embroidered on. My Dd had an unusual name at the time, so it was a real surprise.

Ive always made sure to keep it soft and fluffy and my Dd took it with her when she moved out. It’s still useful as it’s adult sized.

I fully intend to do this as soon as my Dd has a baby.
