I stopped listening to new music in about 2005.

BarelyLiterate · 03/03/2024 10:25

I haven’t heard much of Raye’s music but, from what I have heard, she sounds very much like an Adele tribute act. Is she just a repackaging of the same thing for Gen Z?

LlynTegid · 03/03/2024 10:26

@ButterflyTable Busted may have had a bit more talent than many of their contemporaries (and wrote Emmanuel Macron's favourite song!!) but I agree not a patch on Green Day.

Perfectly reasonable to be old and to have different musical tastes. What is not reasonable is if any of the acts celebrated have misogynistic or other hateful lyrics. 'Bitch' for example.

AmusedMaker · 03/03/2024 10:27

Yep, ‘new’ music to me is The Charlatans / Stone Roses.

AKAsomeoneelse · 03/03/2024 10:32

@Dotty2dot - She might have styled herself a bit like AW last night but Raye’s music is nothing like that of Amy Winehouse!

HRTQueen · 03/03/2024 10:33

Yes 😆

I saw five minutes of it

ds had a few friends round last night and non of them were interested. I asked if they wanted it on when they were having dinner and they looked blankly at me. When I was their age (16) I remember it being a huge event that most of us watched and got exited about

MimiHendrix · 03/03/2024 10:38

I watched about the first half. I like Raye and I’m pleased she did so well, but it was turning into The Raye Show, so I got a bit bored halfway through.

It didn’t really make me feel old, as I have teens and so knew most of the acts. But The Brits has always been quite a cringey watch, and last night was no different.

Terrible presenting. So awkward. Lovely Clara Amfo did her best to prop the other two up, but it felt like a sixth form dress rehearsal.

Weird choice of people presenting awards. The post office drama women?! Why?

Depressingly talentless, half naked women everywhere. Ellie Goulding <shudder>.

The atmosphere was flat and joyless.

I worked in the music industry in the 90s and noughties, and these things were much more raucous affairs back then Grin

I gave up half way through also. I’m officially old.

Beezknees · 03/03/2024 14:51

Raye has done brilliantly for herself. Left her label as she was sick of being told what to do by middle aged men and has been releasing music independently since then. To win that many BRITs as an independent artist is amazing.

I don't like pink pantheress's music but I think she's funny and down to earth.

Goforitagain · 03/03/2024 14:57

I did but I am

FrenchandSaunders · 03/03/2024 18:32

@Beezknees absolutely agree with you about Raye, incredible.

TonTonMacoute · 03/03/2024 19:21

I'm incredibly old, as is DH, we saw Raye on Jools Hootenanny and instantly went out and bought her CD - which reinforces how old we are.

Love her voice and love the album. Delighted she did so well, one in the eye to all the industry execs who think they know it all.

PS she's not like Amy or Adele.

CapitalKnockers · 03/03/2024 20:10

I dont bother with the Brits, I know I won't know most of the acts as I'm into rock/heavy metal and their representation is very poor. The Brits cater to pop/hip hop/rnb mostly I find, with a bit of nostalgia thrown in like Blur.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 03/03/2024 22:40

I think Raye is great, at least in the last year or so, now she is independent. Listen to Oscar Winning Tears-Royal Albert Hall performance.

Gooseysgirl · 04/03/2024 10:25

I like Raye and that was some performance she gave! I did not know who Jungle were and I am a new fan!!! This is why I continue to watch each year, although I don't know the half of them I'll nearly always make a new discovery ☺️

K0OLA1D · 04/03/2024 10:29

I didn't watch. But I voted for Bring Me the Horizon and they won their category!

The type of music otherwise isn't my thing at all

bilbodog · 04/03/2024 10:35

RAYE is amazing and nothing like a tribute act. If you go on iplayer you can watch her show at the royal Albert hall last year - shes a phenominal performer.
