If we enjoyed (and had brilliant discussions about) Suffragette and Hidden Figures what else would we like?

Dd1 is really enjoying this kind of thing and seems very inspired.

Any Jodie Foster film-some are 18 though. Maybe not Taxi Driver! And Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore (JF had a minor part) is a great film about a working class woman who battles through with strength of character.

Sarah Connor - Terminator series.

A Call to Spy

True story about some of the amazingly brave and brilliant women in SOE during WW2

Decafflatteplease · 01/03/2024 09:25

Bit retro but what about educating Rita and Shirley valentine? Might be a bit old for your DD though! Old as in dated and old as in sex scenes/talk

I also recommend Queen of Katwe, amazing film. My DCs loved it, early teens.

Another recommendation is Catherine Called Birdy - amazing film with Bella Ramsey, Billie Piper and Andrew Scott. Seen it twice with the kids, could watch it again.

Blackkklansman
Priscilla Queen of the desert
kinky boots

Not necessarily about empowering women but about minority communities I suppose

Amara123 · 01/03/2024 11:59

Also Do Revenge, has Maya Hawke in it, really fun but some good messages in there.
Sarah Connor in Terminator 2 was total inspo for me as a teen.
Private Benjamin with Goldie Hawn.
I loved Wild, the book is great.
Veronica Mars the series.

Whiskeypowers · 02/03/2024 08:55

Not sure if it quite fits the brief but a film my sister and I loved watching together when we were younger was Me Without You with Michelle Williams and Anna Friel in.

Female Ghostbusters movie

I love this film it didn't get great reviews so went back to a male cast I don't think the female cast was given a chance, anyway it's a funny silly film with great characters worth a watch.

Wild with Reese Witherspoon

GrumpyPanda · 07/03/2024 15:14

Since you're reviving the thread... just thinking the Bletchley Park mystery series would fit great. Some distinct echoes of Hidden Figures!

Also, for movie classics, has anyone mentioned Adam's Rib, with Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy as married lawyers squaring off on the same case? Simply brilliant.
