If we enjoyed (and had brilliant discussions about) Suffragette and Hidden Figures what else would we like?

Dd1 is really enjoying this kind of thing and seems very inspired.

Pitch perfect

Bridesmaids

I must say my idol as a teen was Scarlett O'Hara. I think she's one of the most amazing literary characters and Vivienne Leigh's performance in Gone with the Wind is in my view the best performance by a female actress ever, so even though the film is controversial, it features one of the most amazing and strong female characters of all time.

Also She Devil with Meryl Streep is a brilliant film about female empowerment. I absolutely loved it as a teen.

Screamingabdabz · 28/02/2024 20:26

Goodness some of these films are pretty dated and ‘heavy’ for a 14 year old… keep it light!

I’d recommend both Legally Blonde films because it is totally about self esteem, independence and female empowerment but also doesn’t undermine femininity. And they’re funny.

And the Pitch Perfect trilogy which is about team work and accepting your strengths and weaknesses (and forgiving and celebrating other women theirs). And they’re funny.

Silkwood

Teens are not incapable of watching serious films. My teen prefers them to nonsensical teen dramas.

Hairdyemistake · 28/02/2024 20:28

Joy
Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken

They're both true stories

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 28/02/2024 20:30

the accused (depending on how old she is)

Absolutely not for a 14 year old.

InTheUpsideDownToday · 28/02/2024 20:31

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe.
"Towanda"!!!

Amazing film that I need to watch again soon. Kathy Bates is wonderful in it.

PawsisShady · 28/02/2024 20:37

Nappily ever after on Netflix

11NigelTufnel · 28/02/2024 20:39

9 to 5 is wonderful. I love that Dolly Parton can be a feminist icon in heels, make up and bouffant hair.

Moana is young, but girl stands up to the men and saves the day.

Beaches shows female friendship well and has a very young Mayim Bialik.

Sister act is very female driven. They all learn from each other, improve the community and fight the baddies!

CODA fits your criteria, but after watching I was left wishing it was more of a story with deaf people at the centre, not the hearing child's life.

11NigelTufnel · 28/02/2024 20:41

Oh and Alien / Aliens. The saga gets sillier as it goes on, but Ripley is wonderful.

JanesTeddy · 28/02/2024 20:45

Mildred Pierce

His Girl Friday

All about Eve

How to marry a millionaire

Johnny Guitar

VincentVanGoth · 28/02/2024 20:53

Riding in cars with boys

eta the book is better than the film

pastypirate · 28/02/2024 21:10

theduchessofspork · 28/02/2024 20:20

Working girl (there’s a female villain as well but still)

the accused (depending on how old she is)

silence of the lambs (ditto)

the colour purple (ditto)

crouching tiger hidden dragon (great female led fight scene)

alien

Frida

A league of their own

9 to 5

Mona Lisa smile

Precious

Brooklyn

Mermaids

she’s beautiful when she’s angry (documentary)

vintage movies -

gentlemen prefer blondes

His girl Friday

African Queen

Precious? Are you seriously serious? I've read the book and seen the film it's utterly horrific. Hard pass. And Silence of the Lambs.
