If we enjoyed (and had brilliant discussions about) Suffragette and Hidden Figures what else would we like?

Dd1 is really enjoying this kind of thing and seems very inspired.

Moxie

A Must Watch for teenage girls

I came to say that

Queen's gambit is a series but very good

XelaM · 28/02/2024 19:48

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof with the unbelievably beautiful young Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman also features a strong woman - also probably the most beautiful TV couple of all time and an incredible performance by Burl Ives.

Charlotte Gray (Resistance in WW2)
Testament of Youth (WW1)

The help is problematic. Viola Davis has spoken about how she regrets it.

It is in that it’s about a primarily black women’s story, primarily told through the eyes of a white woman, which is what she regrets.. but it’s still pretty inspirational. She also acknowledges it did a lot for her career, and said she had a good time making it, so don’t think it’s a huge regret, or a reason not to watch it.

I'm just place marking to come back and watch some of these! I've seen some of the films mentioned but not many. I was glad to see Bend It Like Beckham - I watched that when I was about 9 or 10 when I was being childminded on a rare evening and the childminder had older daughters who had already seen it and put it on. I absolutely loved it and it just had such a big impact on me at that age.

Just to illustrate my point above 😃

It's one of my favourite films of all time.

The Hate U Give
She Said

Not sure about Promising Young Woman at 14 - 'that' scene is very disturbing

frippit · 28/02/2024 20:01

Vindication Swim, it's about Mercedes Gleis the first British woman to swim the English Channel in 1927

TheFTrain · 28/02/2024 20:08

Oh dear the Workibg Girl suggestion made me cry a bit.

My favourite film as a teen in the 90's. Really struck a chord with me.

When I went to work in New York in 2001 going down to ride the Staten Island ferry felt very important and profound.

I know it's in lots of films but it's that sequence in that film with that Carly Simon song that makes your heart just soar.

I am a hormonal mess.

I loved Joy with Jennifer Lawrence a while back - true story, uplifting

Crazy Rich Asians is fun with a grounded female protagonist

The woman king - excellent recent film about female warrior tribe

Promising Young Women is a bit much for a 14 year old but I'd forgotten about Moxie which is brilliant.
A series called Never have I ever on Netflix is great..teen high school stuff but with some interesting stuff about Hindu culture clash in there
100% Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Mean Girls
10 Things I hate about You for the contrast between the sisters and the hit at the end where the younger ditzy one gets it and smacks the dickhead guy.
Little Women..not the most recent though unless you already know the story. The timeline is confusing.
Don't Worry Darling..bit messed up but v v interesting.

BestieNo1 · 28/02/2024 20:12

Omg The Power is an incredible series on Amazon Prime.
Life changing and thought provoking!! ;)
Superb.
The book is great too. Naomi Alderman xx

cunningartificer · 28/02/2024 20:15

Oooh thinking of what I watched with DD which led to interesting discussions... actually "Mean Girls" is so interesting about getting your priorities right, and "Ten things I hate about you" apart from having the gorgeous Heath Ledger is excellent about the pressures on young women (also based on Shakespeare so v educational😂) and actually the Branagh/ Thompson "Much Ado" is a great film and very good about women speaking up as well...!

Hollyhocksandlarkspur · 28/02/2024 20:16

Enola Holmes with Helena Bonham Carter and fantastic young actress playing Sherlock Holmes’ younger sister, original funny and brilliant.

Bride and Prejudice spoof of Pride and Prejudice Bollywood style, funny and great female lead who stands up for who she is. Colours and energy are amazing.

PermanentTemporary · 28/02/2024 20:17

None of these are uncomplicated or straightforward but really interesting to think about

Wadija
Carve Her Name With Pride
Hilary and Jackie

I was going to suggest Hidden Figures, it's so good isn't it? it's an oldie but steel magnolias is a great film with great women in it.

Was about to say exactly this. It's so good.

theduchessofspork · 28/02/2024 20:20

Working girl (there’s a female villain as well but still)

the accused (depending on how old she is)

silence of the lambs (ditto)

the colour purple (ditto)

crouching tiger hidden dragon (great female led fight scene)

alien

Frida

A league of their own

9 to 5

Mona Lisa smile

Precious

Brooklyn

Mermaids

she’s beautiful when she’s angry (documentary)

vintage movies -

gentlemen prefer blondes

His girl Friday

African Queen

Jeezypeepers · 28/02/2024 20:20

Another recommendation for A Small Light. It's so well done and just full of normal banter and relationships but on such a terrifying backdrop. I remember thinking for ages afterwards that it's what it would really be like if the Nazis were in power now; not over some distant historical people but just normal folk pottering about their lives and then the good ones maybe hiding some Jews. But also lots of good ones getting sucked in by the propaganda machine. Meip Gies is a legend and I'd love my daughter to turn out just like her.
