If we enjoyed (and had brilliant discussions about) Suffragette and Hidden Figures what else would we like?

Dd1 is really enjoying this kind of thing and seems very inspired.

Yes please god not The Accused. I mean it’s brilliant but I’m not over it yet and I’m almost 50!

The Secret Life of Bees

BrandyandGinger · 28/02/2024 21:59

My teen is a bit older and recently loved Saving Mr Banks and Mona Lisa Smile. Priscilla is on MUBI now and it's a great study of a young woman coming into her own. The Decendants is on DisneyPlus and it features a really great performance by Shailene Woodley as a teenager having to deal with a difficult family situation.

Enola holmes 1 &2

legally blonde the musical is available on youtube(it’s an mtv special recording)

Ella Enchanted

Needhelp101 · 28/02/2024 22:04

Has been said before but Alien/Aliens. Both Ripley and Vasquez.

Also Terminator 2. James Cameron really loves ballsy female leads (he was married to Katherine Bigelow and there's a marvellous shot of him when she won the Oscar for the Hurt Locker saying "Yes!")

Geena Davis in The Long Kiss Goodnight. Superb. Samuel L Jackson too, and one of the very few films where the leads have perfect chemistry but don't end up in bed together.

Sister Act 2
The Help
Land girls

I break my heart every time I watch land girls. Superb film though!!

BrandyandGinger · 28/02/2024 22:05

Wild and Election, both with Reese Witherspoon, might be good choices too.

iloveshetlandponies · 28/02/2024 22:06

Brill idea for a thread, place marking

TheDefiant · 28/02/2024 22:11

Argylle has a great female character

Star Trek Voyager - series with amazing female Captain.

RantyMcGee · 28/02/2024 22:13

Steel Magnolias.

Bend it like Beckham

Macramepotholder · 28/02/2024 22:14

Whip It.
At the other end of the age spectrum I really enjoyed Nyad recently.
4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 days- bit bleak but a good discussion about reproductive rights.
Girlhood.
The movie of Persepolis (the comic book is awesome as well).

Happy Death Day - like a murder mystery version of Groundhog Day.

Yes, this is fab! A great examination of a pretty horrible protagonist who grows and changes for the better.

Legally Blonde is also excellent 👌

Belatedeyebrows · 29/02/2024 06:40

Hidden figures- it's amazing and creates a good discussion for after.

Me too, on both points!

I adored enola holmes we have watched them. The one about the match girls was incredible and broke me a bit but an amazing film and theme. We did some reading about that one.

I confused this with Disney descendants!

Just wanted to add we have good discussions about female characters being portrayed as 'doing womaning wrong' so Miss Congeniality, 10 Things I hate about you, Legally Blonde. It's dd1 favourite expression!
Essentially we have started doing the Bechdel (sic) test with films.

We loved QueensGambit and I was gutted it wasn't a true story although dd1 was horrified by the casting of Thomas Brodie Sangster 😂.

We also watched Unorthadox which was a bloody hard watch but so interesting.

I'm avoiding ww2 stuff I just can't handle it too upsetting.

Sadly neither dd got into Erin Brockovich - shame cos it ticked every box!

Enola Holmes with Helena Bonham Carter and fantastic young actress playing Sherlock Holmes’ younger sister, original funny and brilliant.

Bride and Prejudice spoof of Pride and Prejudice Bollywood style, funny and great female lead who stands up for who she is. Colours and energy are amazing.

Oh I love Bride and Prejudice - it’s fab

ghostyslovesheets · 29/02/2024 10:31

Mermaids is basically my life story!

I liked Gunpowder Milkshake - can’t remember how violent it was though

FredWinnie · 29/02/2024 11:26

The Heat - Melissa McArthy and Sandra Bullock
It's a 15 rating though

It's hilarious too
