If we enjoyed (and had brilliant discussions about) Suffragette and Hidden Figures what else would we like?

Dd1 is really enjoying this kind of thing and seems very inspired.

An Education
Promising Young Woman
both starring the excellent Carey Mulligan (she won an Oscar for the former)

Sister Act 2
The Help
Land girls

The help is problematic. Viola Davis has spoken about how she regrets it.

We Are The Best

Walk Ride Rodeo
Sunday Horse

(both true stories about incredible horse women - I have a horsey 14-year-old 😂)

We Are The Best

Yes, this is such a brilliant film!

Freaky Friday, the one with Jamie Lee Curtis.

There's a chess one set in Uganda I think. Can't remember the name. We loved hidden figures too. The boy who harnesses the wind is not a female lead but similar theme of empowering ( literally) a community.

Queen of Katwe, I think!

LindorDoubleChoc · 28/02/2024 19:32

The original and absolute best = 9 to 5 with Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.

Also Working Girl with Melanie Griffiths and Sigourney Weaver.

Also Aliens (otherwise Alien 2) with Sigourney Weaver.

LindorDoubleChoc · 28/02/2024 19:34

Erin Brokovich also an excellent suggestion by a pp.

LydiaPoet · 28/02/2024 19:35

I think most have been mentioned but some of the Disney ones are good too for provoking discussion

Kenthighst · 28/02/2024 19:36

Erin Brokovich with Julia Roberts

SnackyOnassis · 28/02/2024 19:36

I'll second other posters on Working Girl (my favourite film!)
First Wives Club, 10 Things I Hate About You, Ever After..
One of my favourite icons from childhood was the lady who owned the Aristocats - gorgeous eccentric millionaire woman who lives in luxury with her lovely cats. Goals.

Moxie

A Must Watch for teenage girls

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 28/02/2024 19:39

Shirley Valentine

A Small Light. On disney plus.
It's about the woman who helped Anne Frank and the others who hid with her. Its really good and suitable for a 14 year old. It's about how we all make choices in situations and its very uplifting given the subject matter.

Shirley Valentine

Definitely this!
you’ve had your chips and egg!
such a brilliant evocation of the death by a thousand cuts so many women of that era faced.

GetWhatYouWant · 28/02/2024 19:43

Bend it like Beckham
National Velvet( with a very young Elizabeth Taylor)

Amara123 · 28/02/2024 19:44

Temple Grandin.
Promising young woman.
Maybe read about Geena Davis' work on female representation in media?

LittleBoPeepHasLostHerShit · 28/02/2024 19:44

All the Hunger Games movies are really good. I remember thinking that the female lead is genuinely never sexualised at any point, which unfortunately is unusual. I really like the dystopian storyline too. And two cute guys fighting over her is nice!

Useyourfork · 28/02/2024 19:44

Anything with Jodie Foster😊

Bend it like Beckham

International Velvet is even better (it's the sequel and can be found on YouTube. It's one of my teen's favourite films.

ToriTheStoryteller · 28/02/2024 19:45

Women Talking.
Steel Magnolias. Not about struggle/empowerment but a brilliant film about the inter-generational bonds of female relationships.
