It’s tough dealing with the fact your career has peaked and you’re now on the downhill slide to irrelevance.

RafaistheKingofClay · 05/03/2024 17:08

They aren’t ready? Ready for what. Wiping themselves out totally?

LittleBowSheep · 05/03/2024 17:16

My plan for GE night was to have a drink each time the Tories lost a seat. With the wipeout that it now appears it's going to be I might need to change that to just a little sip each time or I could end up with alcohol poisoning by the morning.

IClaudine · 05/03/2024 17:20

When I were a lass, the day after Thatcher won her first GE one of my teachers came in very much still the worse for wear (drowning his sorrows not celebrating!).

You wouldn't get away with that now!

I’m sticking firmly to 2 May.

I saw an advert on TV the other day talking about May 2nd election.

I did get excited for a second thinking I'd missed an announce, ent!

IClaudine · 05/03/2024 17:24

Ooh. Paddy Power's odds on Monday were 4/1 for a Spring GE (April-June). Today they are 3/1...

(And October-December 2024 1/3. I think they were 1/4 yesterday).

I'm grumbling in the background about having to teach the next day....

I'm grumbling with you. Although it's forest school Friday afternoon so not all bad 🤣

Cheguevarahamster · 05/03/2024 17:36

Just seen this on twitter which seems like a good idea.

Richard H@TheHoogie

Every time a result is announced on election night and it involves a Tory falling we’re gonna go outside and on our balconies and bang pots and pans right?

Do not do this you will die. 😂

Yeah, I think if we took that approach we'd end up dead.

TokyoSushi · 05/03/2024 18:13

I've great booked the next day off due to the polling station duties, hurrah!

BIossomtoes · 05/03/2024 18:15

I’ve got a bottle of fizz ready and waiting. When do we think I should open it? I’m thinking about the 100th Tory loss mark.

I do supply these days. I’ve got a booking on Fridays teaching adult students GCSE English at a college. They keep not being clear about when the booking is until, so I’ve said to the agency that if they want me next term up to the exams I’m afraid I can’t do the 3rd because I have a prior commitment.

Cornettoninja · 05/03/2024 18:57

I keep catching up on this thread and thinking I’ve missed an announcement for the GE date!! GrinGrin

I really hope Labour don’t go on the defensive after the budget. They need to call it out and name explicitly which of their strategies have been shamelessly used by the slimy barstweards.

LittleBowSheep · 05/03/2024 19:24

@RafaistheKingofClay, @pointythings, yes, you are right. I don't even drink very often so it would totally wipe me out. I'll have to come up with another plan.

Very much looking forward to this thread on the Big Night though 😁

IClaudine · 05/03/2024 19:42

Me too!

pointythings · 05/03/2024 19:48

It may be the case that one thread will not be enough.

TokyoSushi · 05/03/2024 19:50

I think it'll be rather like the 2020 US Election when we went through a couple of threads a day!

pointythings · 05/03/2024 19:48

It may be the case that one thread will not be enough.

Could we have one thread just for listing the Tory loses, or would that overfill?

TokyoSushi · 05/03/2024 19:51

Remind me, when will they have to announce a 2nd May election by? Did we say 18th March?

TokyoSushi · 05/03/2024 19:55

The situation in Birmingham seems terrible, 21% on the council tax over 2 years and huge cuts to services, awful.

Yes 18th.

tl:dr

For political reasons, @michelledonelan recklessly spread a damaging and dangerous lie about named academics in an area directly relevant to her Ministerial responsibilities.

She has now admitted this and paid damages.

In what world is this not a resigning issue?

Cornettoninja · 05/03/2024 20:09

We’re pretty much all due to see big rises in CT aren’t we? That 2% is going to look even more ridiculous very quickly.

Birmingam does have special circumstances and it’s very concerning. I do think that the wage gap debt should have more help from central government. It’s such a huge figure.
