I think the world can see we are on the wrong side of history with Brexit.
So why so scared, or convinced even, that they have it right this time when the world can see children being murdered daily? His answer is what, just don't look?

Only just after Brexit we were told the far right were top of all extremist lists. What has changed since IDF have been bombing with gay abandon? I am wondering if it is the far right, rather than the Palestinians he is worried might curry more favour in a country willing to spend over £300k per refugee sending them to a country they've had to jump through legal hoops to white wash as "safe"?

He mentioned something about projecting scenes of Gaza onto Big Ben when they "had a vote" - was this something by Led By Donkeys? It sounded like something they'd do and I wondered if they were going to be made an example of..

It was the slogan "From the river to the sea" by pro-palestinian protesters when the commons debated the SNP motion for a gaza ceasefire last week.
The Conservatives like to call it a "vile antisemitic slur" to obfuscate what was actually said and minimise the more explicit racism from their own MPs by pretending that "they do it too" about the other parties.
I'm heartily sick of them .

I think a long list of racist slurs used by the Tories in the last 15 years should now be projected onto Big Ben to make a point...

newnamethanks · 01/03/2024 22:04

I'm astonished Galloway has spooked them so badly. He must be laughing his head off.

Cornettoninja · 01/03/2024 22:47

I suspect there's been some intelligence that there are going to be right wing mobs to counteract the protesting with an element of "charity starts at home" on the MP's doorsteps to boot. Far more worrying than some lefty "wokeists". That's my guess.

that thought crossed my mind. Either this was a pure propaganda piece to get the Brexit spirit back or he’s using some sort of intelligence that has someone in MI6 holding their head in their hands over him using.

I'm astonished Galloway has spooked them so badly

Maybe it’s a 3d chess move. The tories act scared to make Labour look more vulnerable than they actually are.

I see his speech has been redacted for the website

PM address on extremism: 1 March 2024 - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

Long standing Parliamentary conventions have been upended because of safety concerns.
[Please note political content redacted here.]I need to speak to you all this evening because this situation has gone on long enough…

Rishi Sunak delivering address on extremism

PM address on extremism: 1 March 2024

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak made a statement outside Downing Street on extremism.

IClaudine · 01/03/2024 23:17

"Transcript of the speech exactly as it was delivered" immediately followed by "Please note: Political content has been redacted from this transcript".

Why has it been redacted? Did they break some sort of rule by broadcasting the part about Rochdale? Would that only normally be allowed as part of a party political broadcast?

Interesting. Should we be complaining to OFCOM?

L1ttledrummergirl · 01/03/2024 23:21

So they can't even stand by their own words. Wtf is going on in government? It shows how little consideration was actually given to this issue. Why do they feel the need to censor themselves? Sunak was happy enough to say the words, but not happy to have them published. How the fuck is that good governance and leadership.

Every day they demonstrate how little regard they have for this country and the people who live here.

AdamRyan · 01/03/2024 23:32

You can be a practising Hindu and a proud Briton as I am. Or a devout Muslim and a patriotic citizen as so many are. Or a committed Jewish person and the heart of your local community……and all underpinned by the tolerance of our established, Christian church.

I'm not very fond of Abrahams religions, I think they are patriarchal bullshit. But am I being unreasonable in thinking this is weird? It sounds like the default UK position should be Christian and we are tolerating other religions?? Wtaf?

What is the point of redacting it when the whole speech has been broadcasted live and it is on Sunak's official twitter, youtube etc

Will they edit that too?

Has anyone seen any reporting on this redaction?

Presumably the party political stuff cannot be published on a .gov website, which of course begs the question whether it should have been delivered in Downing Street, since it clearly wasn't about governing.

It is weird, I agree. And incorrect, if he is referring to the Church Of England, as the state religion. For a start, it barely ‘underpins’ anything these days, it’s a legacy faith. Probably not the majority faith either - Christian including all the other denominations might be but I doubt it.
“Those of all faiths and none” usually covers it.

Alexandra2001 · 02/03/2024 07:13

What i found deeply worrying about Sunaks speech is he sought to undermine a democratic election.

If the electorate go for the extremes (esp in a FPTP system) then thats a failure of people like Sunak and Starmer, whose response to RS's speech was spectacularly weak.

Piggywaspushed · 02/03/2024 07:14

The last Census was very interesting on this

https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/culturalidentity/religion

The way I read his statement he almost makes it sound like other religions are somehow offshoots and Christianity is some kind of Ur religion.

Saying stuff about Christianity doesn't play to much of a crowd any more, for sure.

D±emocracy eh? Who needs it? Not us, it seems. Voters of Rochdale choose their successful candidate. PM, whose party has initiated, supported and developed the current state of play, with his MPs and ministers ramping up hatred by the day, doesn't like it and throws a public tantrum telling us they did the wrong thing. Takes your breath away.

Saucery · 02/03/2024 07:55

Thank you @Piggywaspushed, I thought the Census stats were something like that. It’s certainly not a case of an ‘underpinning’ National Christianity that graciously allows other faiths space to worship.
I feel a bit picky, but the way he has differentiated the commitment of faiths. He (Hindu) is a proud Briton, Muslims are patriotic, Jews support their local community.
He seemed to think it was a very important speech to make right there, right then, so I would have liked a bit more thought put into it. But then I remember it’s Sunak and his Tory Party and I chuck my expectations in the bin Hmm

cakeorwine · 02/03/2024 08:37

This is what I posted elsewhere about the speech.

The Tory party have thrived on stoking the culture wars. The right wing media has fed it and he has the hypocrisy to say things like this:

"We are a country where we love our neighbours.

And we are building Britain together.

But I fear that our great achievement

in building the world’s most successful multi-ethnic, multi faith democracy

is being deliberately undermined.

There are forces here at home trying to tear us apart"

"When they tell their lies, we will tell the truth.

When they try and sap our confidence, we will redouble our efforts.

And when they try and make us doubt each other…

we will dig deeper for that extra ounce of compassion and empathy

that they want us to believe doesn’t exist, but that I know does.

If we can do that, we can build on our great achievement in creating today’s Britain…

a country of kind, decent, tolerant people."

I see fuck all tolerance of his party towards other people, Zero compassion and empathy.

The Tory party have fuck all tolerance. Fuck all compassion and empathy.

Hypocrite

I hope someone uses his words back on him whenever a "culture wars" issue comes up. And they come back to bite him.

Cornettoninja · 02/03/2024 09:09

From what I can make out online rishi only succeeded in verbally smacking himself in the face with a frying pan in front of everyone. No one is happy with his statement.

There are those who are rolling their eyes pointing out his hands are dirty in causing tensions, those who think he hasn’t done enough to stamp out tensions, those quite venomously blaming their opposites (left vs right) and those who this is news to and now believe they’re living in an episode of clockwork orange.

So overall, nice one Rish. You utter dingbat. Someone should buy you a fridge magnet with advice like ‘Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt”

Are you sure you put in the correct one of your 7 bins?

DuncinToffee · 02/03/2024 09:31

Lee Anderson was given a standing ovation at a Tory Party fundraiser last night

https://x.com/AdamBienkov/status/1763850266988696036?s=20

While Rishi Sunak was lecturing the nation last night about our duty to reject those promoting division and intolerance, here's what his own party was doing

DuncinToffee · 02/03/2024 09:32

A speech about 7 bins would have made more sense than what he presented

Is Sunal still having his war on woke bins or has he spun the policy wheel of fortune on that?

and all underpinned by the tolerance of our established, Christian church.

Since when has the Christian Church been tolerant? It had to be dragged kicking and screaming into changes over the last 30 years. And if they are now merely tolerating female Bishops, rather than embracing them as normal, it's hardly inspiring.

fabio12 · 02/03/2024 09:49

There was uproar when Canterbury Cathedral allowed a silent disco last month. To compound the injury they "only" raised £10k for the church! Yes, Proud Christians were protesting that, not the genocide.
