"the tolerance of our established, Christian church".

Hilariously ambiguous if you ask me. It could be read as the 'people' tolerate the established Christian church.

Lee Anderson was given a standing ovation at a Tory Party fundraiser last night

https://x.com/AdamBienkov/status/1763850266988696036?s=20

While Rishi Sunak was lecturing the nation last night about our duty to reject those promoting division and intolerance, here's what his own party was doing

They couldn’t fit the stereotype of ‘old angry white man’ more if they tried. I’d say we need younger blood but Rishi fits that brief and he’s all too happy to be their lap dog begging for treats. God knows why, he’s rich enough to be having a ball as an ‘entrepreneur’, even without any talent for literally anything.

👋 to @Piggywaspushed. I didn't know you're in Glasgow. I'm in one of its naice suburbs.

Notonthestairs · 02/03/2024 10:34

Afraid I watched the Sunak presentation and then checked out. IMO it didn't require any analysis - it happened solely to grab the 6pm headlines and a few front pages. Not so much light on substance as weightless.

Whilst the Conservative are happy to give standing ovations and hugs to Anderson (or Jenrick, Truss & Braverman) they are in no position to lecture anyone on division in our society.

Oh not any more! Sadly, I now live in the wilds of England.

You can take the girl out of Glasgow...

Mr Anderson eh? Do you think Rishi knows about these dangerous extremists in his own ranks? Any plans for them Rishi? House of Lords is the usual expected route.

placemats · 02/03/2024 11:09

My twitter/x feed is full of Tory MPs praising Sunak and stressing how important the speech was.

It's beginning to feel like desperation.

There's a thread in aibu about the choice of another Tory government or the NHS. Some people still want the Tories. Reminds me of Stalin when got rid of all the doctors.

The amazing thing about Rishi as Prime Minister is that he has certainly succeeded in demonstrating (as if we didn't know it already) that being rich is an indication of having any talent for anything.

I feel I may have missed a not out of my sentence.

...being rich is not an indication....

Yep they are all over Twitter praising that speech. I have a little game I play whenever I see a tweet spouting the Gov line... I have to guess 10 people who have retweeted it. Usually very easy. I did however get blocked by the CON GE candidate in the next town to me for pointing out that is was a crap speech and there was no need for it but if there was, why didn't they use the media suite Allegra made famous? Oh and I also pointed out that Andrea Jenkyns didn't appear to have got the memo given her tweet after the speech Confused

placemats · 02/03/2024 13:16

Yes @ThatbloodyRoblox Jenkyns certainly missed the point spectacularly.

Hmm

Better public services "sometimes means spending less money", says Jeremy Hunt.

I'm sure councils across the UK will be delighted to hear of this bomb proof idea for improving their services.

DuncinToffee · 03/03/2024 10:55

Behind paywall

There will be no major help for younger voters struggling to get on the housing ladder in Wednesday's Budget

"Hunt had privately talked up plans to make a major move to make housing more affordable, but Sunak vetoed changes to stamp duty"

"Now, the budget contains no major measures to appeal to younger voters"

Will Rishi Sunak fly flag for Tory right with budget giveaways?

George Galloway’s by-election win prompted the prime minister to talk tough on extremism. Now he may push his chancellor for more cuts in Wednesday’s budget

Left: Jeremy Hunt, "Labour govs spend more and tax more, Conservative govs spend more wisely and bring tax burden down"

Right: Sky News, "In the last four years, five chancellors says they want to cut taxes. In reality the opposite has happened. Taxes have been rising to near historic highs.. Tax burden is the highest since WWII"

DuncinToffee · 03/03/2024 11:03

Thanks to the boundary changes, we no longer live in Hunt's constituency so can't help voting him out.

(and to the silent tories, I know I can't vote but the majority in our household can Wink)

Have you cut the bit where the sentence continues with "less money on consultants, and private companies run fraudently by our mates"?

Yet this bizarre situation still plays out. A single mum can loose child benefit because she doesn't have a partner also earning £50k so that the family can keep it Hmm https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/64836315

Parents with an infant looking at paperwork

Why more parents are losing child benefit

More parents are losing child benefit because the threshold at which it starts being withdrawn has not changed in 10 years.

Good thread from Liam Thorpe (Liverpool Echo)

There was a day this past week when it felt like many of Britain's many problems were brought out into the open for all to see.

A 🧵 on a day in the life of a failing state

She still only pays 2% NI on earnings over £50k.

Notonthestairs · 03/03/2024 11:25

The Government are basically buying votes by cutting budgets from unprotected areas of spending - eg local government, further education, courts, prisons etc - and setting us up for further austerity.

For an election they know they will lose and so will leave the mess for the next Government to deal with.

fabio12 · 03/03/2024 11:30

Coincides with this 2 days ago on the councils having to sell assets. Clearly the selling of council house assets had such a great long term effect they want to re-create it. Not their problem if they know they won't be re-elected. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-68439624

Binmen in Birmingham

Nineteen councils allowed to sell assets to pay for services

Nineteen local authorities have been given extra flexibility to help balance their books next year.

What a way to think about the public finances: "We believe this tax change would be harmful, but it would set a trap for Labour by wrecking its plans for school meals and NHS spending".

And we wonder why both the tax system and public services are broken.
