He talked about people saying Britain is on the wrong side of history and how other people should say that it isn't.

Surely we are free to make up our own mind about that.

This is the speech

Gosh the Tory keyboard tappers from HQ are already busy elsewhere..

If it's the one in chat, they aren't even trying

This section is controversial

When these groups claim that Britain is and has been on the wrong side of history, we should reject it, and reject it again.
No country is perfect, but I am enormously proud of the good that our country has done.
Our place in history is defined by the sacrifices our people have made,
…in the service of our own freedom and that of others.
And when these groups tell children that they cannot - and will not - succeed because of who they are…
When they tell children that the system is rigged against them or that Britain is a racist country…
This is not only a lie, but a cynical attempt to crush young dreams, and turn impressionistic minds against their own society.
I stand here as our country’s first non-white Prime Minister, leading the most diverse government in our country’s history…
…to tell people of all races, all faiths and all backgrounds…
…it is not the colour of your skin, the God you believe in or where you were born, that will determine your success…
…but just your own hard work and endeavour.
We must be prepared to stand up for our shared values in all circumstances, no matter how difficult.

Galloway saying he despises the PM doesn't sound very parliamentary language.

....then went on to say millions do too... stopped clock and all that!!!

If you are white, working class and male, it's harder to get on because of that compared to some other groups.

I guess it's bad to say that now and to say that barriers need to be addressed.

Maybe he has "survivor" bias - he knows how well he's done but he can't see those who haven't done as well

There is some vile Islamophobic poison being dripped elsewhere on MN right now. Most people are not falling for it, though.

That's Tory philosophy 101. I did it. Why can't you?

Sunak was born on 12 May 1980 in Southampton General Hospital in Southampton, Hampshire,[3][4] to East African-born Hindu parents of Indian Punjabi descent, Yashvir and Usha Sunak.[5][6][7] He attended Stroud School, a preparatory school in Romsey, and later studied at Winchester College as a dayboy, becoming head boy of the college.[8][9][10]

He worked as a waiter in a curry house in Southampton during his summer holidays.[11][12] He read philosophy, politics and economics at Lincoln College, Oxford, graduating with a first in 2001.[10][13]

During his time at university, he undertook an internship at Conservative Campaign Headquarters and joined the Conservative Party.[9] In 2006, Sunak earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Stanford University as a Fulbright Scholar.[13][14][15] While at Stanford, he met his future wife Akshata Murty, the daughter of Indian billionaire N. R. Narayana Murthy of Infosys.[16]

Has it prompted Sunak's latest relauch, where as an unelected PM he has decided to protect democracy by rabble rousing?

"When they tell their lies, we will tell the truth"

They wouldn't know truth if it jumped up and bit them on the arse.

This stands out as a threat. It's their truth or no truth. We are down the rabbit hole.

DuncinToffee · 01/03/2024 18:44

Well, at the very least, No10 can say that making that crucial, emergency, ten-minute statement was what justified using a taxpayer-funded RAF jet to fly Sunak back from a political event in Aberdeen.

cakeorwine · 01/03/2024 18:48

Ed Davey

The British people will take no lessons from a prime minister and Conservative party who have sowed the seeds of division for years,” said Sir Ed Davey. “This is the same prime minister who made Suella Braverman his home secretary and Lee Anderson his party’s deputy chairman.

PeasfullPerson · 01/03/2024 18:59

So in between what are absolutely correct statements, we have an instruction to reject the idea that Britain is on the wrong side of history with Gaza.

I am absolutely fuming. Every country has at some point been on the wrong side of history, we shouldn’t be scared to examine ourselves.

He couldn’t resist ruining this opportunity to try and unite us, by asking us to excuse the inexcusable. Shame on you Rishi!

‘When these groups claim that Britain is and has been on the wrong side of history, we should reject it, and reject it again.’

PeasfullPerson · 01/03/2024 19:02

Does anyone else feel like the Conservatives are going all out to try and get the police to do their dirty work? And that the police are this time having none of it.

RafaistheKingofClay · 01/03/2024 19:19

I think he’s just put the police in between a rock and a hard place. The police need to be left to police the marches in a way that is safest for all of the marchers and anyone nearby. Surely the last thing anyone would want is over zealous policing risking sparking much bigger incidents. That’s not to say they should ignore violence but going on hard on protestors rarely ends well.

Jenkyns has obviously taken the message on board. Note this tweet from 5.58pm

We need action, ban blooming hate marches, drag them off the street, and lock them up!

I think you are misunderstanding (perhaps willfully) what they mean by banning marches. Marches will under Sunak's stewardship become unnecessary because his new plan he will ensure that those issues that have previously caused people to protest will be addressed and solved in a timely manner before there is a need for the protest.

AdamRyan · 01/03/2024 19:45

This is terrifying. How much further does this go before he announces "national emergency" and suspends democracy entirely?
Also it's kind of reminiscent of Putins line against the Ukrainian "nazis".
I feel completely powerless. Just, ridiculous statement, why?

Presumably farmers marches that the PM joins are exempt.

newnamethanks · 01/03/2024 19:58

"Survivor bias"? Rishi is a clear case of Stockholm Syndrome, he's fallen for Patel, Braverman, Boris, Farage, Anderson et al. And now he thinks like them. That whole Party needs de-programming.

fabio12 · 01/03/2024 21:14

I think the world can see we are on the wrong side of history with Brexit.
So why so scared, or convinced even, that they have it right this time when the world can see children being murdered daily? His answer is what, just don't look?

Only just after Brexit we were told the far right were top of all extremist lists. What has changed since IDF have been bombing with gay abandon? I am wondering if it is the far right, rather than the Palestinians he is worried might curry more favour in a country willing to spend over £300k per refugee sending them to a country they've had to jump through legal hoops to white wash as "safe"?

He mentioned something about projecting scenes of Gaza onto Big Ben when they "had a vote" - was this something by Led By Donkeys? It sounded like something they'd do and I wondered if they were going to be made an example of..

fabio12 · 01/03/2024 21:22

They're going to be choked by their own dog whistle and forced to face the fact that the dogs they've been whipping into a frenzy don't like the team they've picked to back much more than the ones they're bombing, even if they do have the "right" colour skin.

I suspect there's been some intelligence that there are going to be right wing mobs to counteract the protesting with an element of "charity starts at home" on the MP's doorsteps to boot. Far more worrying than some lefty "wokeists". That's my guess.

PeasfullPerson · 01/03/2024 21:28

The Conservatives have been after our human rights for years, us plebs should just do as we are told. I can’t see they care about democracy, it’s just a word that people like Rishi bandy about while doing the absolute opposite. I think they would be happy to rule like Russia or Belarus.

Well they need to get out there to protect the streets of London from Islamists don’t they.
