Do you write 7 with a line through it?

I do. I don't know why.

I've just hand written a returns note for a parcel and thought 'why do I do that?'

I know it's used to differentiate between a 1 and 7 but my handwriting allows a good visual difference between the two numbers without the slash.

I do but no idea why or when I started it.

I’ll also use lines through zeros on official, hand written forms.

Minikievs · 26/02/2024 08:23

I used to, then I got told off for doing it in my first job (numbers based) years ago and then never have since

CurlewKate · 26/02/2024 08:23

@IcanHearUClemFandango "Do you also watch the rain droplets race out of train windows whilst wearing an overly large scarf?"

Mais certainnment!

riotlady · 26/02/2024 08:24

I do, I started doing it when I was about 8 because I thought that was the “old fashioned way” and I loved old fashioned things!

Banquosbanquet · 26/02/2024 08:25

I don't because there's no need. The countries where it's standard write 1 with a long flick on the top so it could easily be mistaken for a 7.

WhatInTheFuckery · 26/02/2024 08:26

Yep, my math's teacher at school always used to ask us to so 1s and 7s were clear. Always done it since

Willmafrockfit · 26/02/2024 08:27

i do
i think its because i had german relatives

or more likely because i too wanted to be cool

No, but my kids have been told to at school.

DH puts a diagonal line through a zero.

If I'm writing a reference number which has a zero and a letter O I'll put a line through the zero, otherwise not. Likewise if there's a number 1 and a capital I then I'll go old school and add the top and bottom to one if not both of them.

I don't put a line through 7.

HeartandSeoul · 26/02/2024 08:33

I do! I’m trying to think when I started to put a line through a 7, and I suspect I saw a teacher do it at secondary school, so copied them.

I took a short calligraphy course and that’s pretty much what the instructor said. It’s a more European style to write the number one with a long serif, so to distinguish it from the number 7 a horizontal line is added to the 7 (which he was very much against doing).

akissbeforebed · 26/02/2024 08:36

I do - because my mum does it and she's German. I also put a line through a capital Z.

Bunnyhopskip · 26/02/2024 08:38

I do. Mainly because I work with numbers/money, and have to write up reports and banking notes quickly... sometimes my handwriting goes a bit feral, and without the line, it can look like a rogue 1! The line makes it far more obvious it's definitely a 7, and then 8 can't get the blame if it gets read wrong 😄

Bloomsdaf · 26/02/2024 08:38

Yes, I remember my maths teacher doing it in primary school and saying it was something we could do if we wanted to. I thought it looked cool so I have done it ever since!

HereComesYourMam · 26/02/2024 08:17

Yes. I think I might have started it as a teen with aspirations to appear cool and European? And it stuck.

Me for this exact same reason 😀

Doesn't a line through z make a totally different sound though? I know it does in Croatian.

BlackCatsAreBrilliant · 26/02/2024 08:39

I do. I started at primary school after making errors in maths because I wasn't always clear when in a hurry.

I now work in a primary school and remembering not to do it is really hard.

Oh, that big flicky 1 used to throw me sometimes - when a German colleague appeared to have written there were 77 ampoules of Diamorphine left in stock, instead of 11 !

Revelatio · 26/02/2024 08:41

I do about 70% of the time. I also put a line through a zero if a technical document (very rare as not often handwritten), and I do my lower case ‘a’ just how it is written here (with the little hat). Again, down to teenage pretensions!

Abhannmor · 26/02/2024 08:42

I do.My handwriting is awful , even using capitals. The 4s look like Hs etc. It doesn't hurt anyway .

Sandysandwich · 26/02/2024 08:42

Yes, started doing it in primary school because I thought it looked fancy. Same as doing a lowercase 'a' with the little extra bit on top rather top.
I stopped doing the 'a' because it took more time when writing cursive but kept the 7 line.

user1469207397 · 26/02/2024 08:43

When I started working for a High Street bank back in the 1980's we were told to cross the 7 to avoid any confusion with number 1 when writing by hand.

Retrievemysanity · 26/02/2024 08:43

Yes, started when I was about 14 on a French exchange and never looked back. I just think it looks really nice. I’ve been told my writing generally is quite ‘French’ looking. Can’t believe that trip influenced me so much!

howaboutchocolate · 26/02/2024 08:46

I do and I also put a line through z too, which helps distinguish it from 2 in equations.

PuppyMonkey · 26/02/2024 08:47

That European 1 in the photo above looks nothing like a 1. Confused

DustyLee123 · 26/02/2024 08:47

Yes. Thought it looked posh when I was a teen, and now it’s habit
