Do you write 7 with a line through it?

I do. I don't know why.

I've just hand written a returns note for a parcel and thought 'why do I do that?'

I know it's used to differentiate between a 1 and 7 but my handwriting allows a good visual difference between the two numbers without the slash.

I didn't think I did, but I've just checked some notes I took last week at work - I do! I do work in Finance though and put a line through my zeros and also say spot instead of point - I have no idea why and it most likely just confuses people.

fedupwithbeingcold · 26/02/2024 09:17

I'm 54 yo and I do cross my 7s and put a diagonal line through my 0.

Loubelle70 · 26/02/2024 09:19

I do... My 7 and 1 are similar because my writing is very flouncy 🤣

itsturtlesallthewaydown · 26/02/2024 09:20

Yeah, it helps distinguish them from a quickly written 2 or a greater than sign.
Doesn't matter in normal life, but if you are doing actual maths calculations it can help.

Yes. I think I might have started it as a teen with aspirations to appear cool and European? And it stuck.

Exactly why I started,I had a European pen pal and thought her writing was incredible.

Also my writing is so crap these days as I type mostly,it's a good way to differentiate between 1 and 7.

See I don't do this, but it makes way more sense because it's much harder to distinguish zeros and 'os'.

BTW does anyone know is the 0 in National insurance numbers are letters or numbers? I never know which to say.

My NI number has 2 letters at the start and 1 at the end, the rest are numbers.
If that's standard, might help you.

NetballHoop · 26/02/2024 09:25

I didn't until secondary school when one teacher had a go at the class for crossing their sevens and said that it was only allowed if you had non UK parentage.

So naturally, I started doing it there and then and have ever since. Despite being decidedly un-exotic.

CurlewKate · 26/02/2024 09:28

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow "Do you have your sleeves over your hands too? Whilst holding said mug?😁"

Yes. I also write with brown ink....

FloralQuestions · 26/02/2024 08:18

I do. I always thought it was the "French way" but maybe thats jaut something my parents told me.

I also put a diagonal line through 0 if I'm writing a technical document or I need absolutely zero ambiguity.

I do it because it's a habit from years living in Switzerland and then France...

Randomsabreur · 26/02/2024 09:35

I started after spending a year in France with a 7 in my address... It has stuck unless very consciously writing numbers for the kids.

I never acquired the French 1 which is the reason for the French 7 though.

Namechanger789 · 26/02/2024 08:23

Omg yes! This is why I do it too

Yes, that's exactly why I started writing 7 that way Grin

iwiporangi · 26/02/2024 09:47

This used to be something they did in Europe mostly

Doingmybest12 · 26/02/2024 09:47

Annoyingly I do it randomly. So unlikely to do it with 7 on its own but likely to do it in a string of numbers like a telephone number but often not the first 7 in the number. So not helpful to anyone

Ilovegoldies · 26/02/2024 09:48

I started when I lived in Spain and have done so ever since. That was 30 years ago.

EndlesslyDistracted · 26/02/2024 09:49

Yes, I think it came from French lessons at school. Or maybe computer studies where we had to write out programmes clearly and unambiguously. I use the line through a zero if it is not clear from the context which it is.

NoCloudsAllowed · 26/02/2024 09:50

I also started to be pretentious as a teen and it's stuck.

For a while I also did a curly tail on my zs but knocked that off!

Goddessonahighway · 26/02/2024 09:51

What about zs? That's another one. Was taught the straight forward way then developed the one with the curve under the line. Probably as a pretentious teenager and it became my normal way. And now I've gone all self conscious about it so I don't know what to write 😆

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 26/02/2024 09:51

Yes
7with a bar
1 with a flicky bit
£ with two bars
Capital Z with a bar
Capitsl I with bars at top and bottom
My first name begins with "A" and I sign my name with a capital sized lower case "a" IYSWIM.

mashup handwriting as a result of going to school in 3 countries!

Yep, here too.

DistingusedSocialCommentator · 26/02/2024 09:52

AlwaysFreezing · 26/02/2024 08:17

Yep, me too. No idea why. Must have been taught to!

I do it to make is 100% clear it is the number 7 when hand written as oppose to 1

yikesanotherbooboo · 26/02/2024 09:52

I used to do this as I was in love with everything French in my teens. It suited me as I had frightful handwriting and it helped to differentiate the numbers. My writing improved through my twenties and I gradually started to feel slightly embarrassed about my previous pretentiousness. I rarely use it now but wheel it out to clarify numbers if they aren't immediately decipherable.

Tarmacadamia · 26/02/2024 09:54

Yes I do, because I spent a lot of time in France on holiday as a child and I liked the way it looked. It also helps differentiate between a 7 and a 1.

New2024 · 26/02/2024 09:55

I’m ambidextrous, right is slightly more dominant for writing but I do sometimes form some characters as if I’m writing left handed. Four was a problem as a child, I couldn’t do it like this 4, had to go the other way. 8 l form from the bottom and my 7s are too curvy, so I use the line if writing for anyone else.

ZsaZsaTheCat · 26/02/2024 09:57

Yes. Wasn’t taught at school but picked it up from somewhere and now years later I find it so odd when I see a 7 without the line through. When its a work based query it can be very important to decipher is it a 2 or a 7 🤔

OutingPosts · 26/02/2024 09:57

I started because I studied in the EU and it was standard. I continued because it incensed my father in law, who detested all things European!
