What happened in the House of Commons tonight?

I'm struggling to understand what is going on and would be grateful is someone can explain to me in simple terms.

Why were Labour worried about the safety of MPs?

Why were the SNP unhappy?

Why were the Tories unhappy?

What's likely to happen next?

Are MPs who don't take a Pro-Palestinian stance really putting their lives at risk?

That's not what the analysis says.

The Conservatives would be mad to try to use that to claim that Truss and Kwarten didn't harm the economy. The simple fact is that people know what happened to their mortgages, to fuel bills, and to prices in the shops, and they know that all that happened under the Tories. If they don't want to blame Truss and Kwarteng, then Johnson, Sunak and Hunt have to take their share of blame, which is actually fair enough.

Where does it say that Truss cost the economy anything?

Bearing in mind, of course, that she allegedly ‘trashed’ the whole economy?

Recession? Not seen anywhere else. Totally the Tories’ fault. 🙄

Fuel bills? Totally the Tories’ fault. 🙄

Any comments on Lee Anderson having the whip withdrawn for saying Sadiq Khan is ‘controlled by Islamists’? No?

Well, there’s a surprise.

Didn’t know that. But it’s the right action to take.

Well, since the Full Fact analysis that a pp linked to could not determine that any financial harm was caused, I’d say that my view was well within a reasonable range of conclusions.

What Truss’s mistake plainly didn’t do was wreck the economy, on any measure.

Not a LibDem? How fascinating. That’s a three pipe problem. You write about English schooling, so not Plaid or the SNP. And I think we’re eye-to-eye on the present Israel issue, so you’re not a Galloway-ite. Hmmm.

You’re not a Tankie are you? Or a Cornish nationalist?

If there was no financial harm caused then why was what she did a ‘mistake’?

No, not those things either, although I’m interested in what your attack line would be if I said I was a Cornish Nationalist.

Why does an abandoned policy - because it was misjudged - mean there’s some harm caused?

It’s not an ”attack line” to ask if you’re a Cornish nationalist, it’s a (tongue in cheek) question. I’m more interested in why you would think it’s an “attack”.

So which party do you, generally, support? Denying that you support every party does invite the question as to which you do.

noblegiraffe · 24/02/2024 18:47

Why does an abandoned policy - because it was misjudged - mean there’s some harm caused?

So you’re suggesting it was both misjudged and abandoned but that it also didn’t cause any problems at all? Square that circle…

I didn’t say that suggesting I’m a Cornish nationalist was an attack line, I was idly wondering what your attack line would be if I was. “Forget Liz Truss’s budget, what about the time the Cornish National party suggested war with Devon” etc etc.

Your mistake, by the way, is assuming that I support any of them. I’ll have to vote for one of them but taking that as support would be wrong. I’ve done it on a coin toss before (from the left-leaning ones obvs, never Tory or Reform or the like). I think the only vote I’ve ever made that I’ve felt positive about was Remain.

pointythings · 24/02/2024 18:52

Why does an abandoned policy - because it was misjudged - mean there’s some harm caused?

Well, it certainly caused considerable harm to the finances of the people whose mortgages were up for renewal in the immediate aftermath.

We're all in the same pickle in Europe and beyond. I have family in China, quietly their economy has taken a bashing. Factories that ceased production during covid the workers went back home, they haven't returned. Their standard of living is now better at home than it used to be because they sent their wages home. China quietly boomed as a nation, becoming self sufficient being able to buy and sell to each other.

My friends say their grandparents who've lived with nothing shake their heads refusing to move from the ghetto type life they've lived and always known. Which is a bedsit with a communal kitchen area in the hall and a shared loo at the end of the corridor. They think it will all end in tears. They do like the hospital though. They're nearly ninety and use the stairs to their room.

Fair enough. Although “never Tory” does limit the options a lot.

But floating voters get my vote, so to speak.

You did say that Cornish nationalist was an “attack line”. It’s there above.

Because when you thought I was a Labour supporter you went on about illegal wars, then you moved onto trying Lib Dems and tuition fees. Hence me wondering what you’d try as a “whatabout” for the Cornish Nationals.

This is pre-war Germany all over again.

Ah, the Reform brigade has joined the fray.

This should be fun. They announced their tax policy today. It would be hysterically funny if it wasn’t so far from the real world. God knows where they think they’d get the money.

WhatsTheUseOfWorrying · 24/02/2024 19:15

You are right about “attack line”. Apologies.

Your interest is misplaced though. I was just trying to establish which (party) political interest you’re arguing for. I wasn’t trying to make a nationalistic point.

(FWIW, Northumbria has a much better and older claim to independence from England.)

You have, however, comprehensively failed to show any trashing of the UK economy by the Tories. So there.

noblegiraffe · 24/02/2024 19:17

You haven’t answered how it was a mistake or a misjudgement if there were no ill effects…. Indeed why was she forced to resign as prime minister after her entirely neutral budget caused nothing at all to happen?

DuncinToffee · 24/02/2024 19:17

Yeah the economy is doing great, just like Sunak's pledge to grow it Hmm

I’m not the Reform brigade. But I’ve seen and experienced things in the last five years that I wouldn’t even dare mention on here.

People like you need to wake up before it’s too late.

Well, let’s go back to the opening comment, shall we, and address the question of WHY Hoyle was worried about the safety of MPs. He said why, after all.

And according to the Telegraph, there was a baying mob outside.

Surely this should be what the discussion is about here?

I don’t have access to the information that Lee Anderson has, and I undoubtedly haven’t seen as much as him.

However, I, personally, have seen and experienced enough to make up my own mind.

I don’t think I’m talking in riddles at all. I think I’m talking in very plain terms.

Do you have any response about my comment on what Hoyle actually said, or are you just here to shut down debate?
