What happened in the House of Commons tonight?

I'm struggling to understand what is going on and would be grateful is someone can explain to me in simple terms.

Why were Labour worried about the safety of MPs?

Why were the SNP unhappy?

Why were the Tories unhappy?

What's likely to happen next?

Are MPs who don't take a Pro-Palestinian stance really putting their lives at risk?

Liz Truss was a Tory PM, she sent the country into economic meltdown and was forced to resign after a humiliating 45 days but you don't think this says anything about the Tory's record on fiscal responsibility?

Mad.

Embarrassing, I agree.

But then let’s face it, not only did she not trash the economy, but she didn’t take us to an unnecessary war that she lied about either, did she?

But you seem happy that Labour’s record on foreign policy isn’t trashed forever.

BIossomtoes · 24/02/2024 13:46

I see no need to apologise for building schools and hospitals. The reason PFI cost a fortune was because the public sector had no commercial contract negotiation skills and the private companies ran rings round it. I experienced a PFI contract at first hand and couldn’t believe that anyone with half a brain would sign up to those terms. The principle was the same as having a mortgage, the execution was woeful.

Dogfisher · 24/02/2024 13:47

LimeViewer · 24/02/2024 10:58

And Wes is the best of them, worrying to hear his involvement in that.

I agree, I have always thought him a potential leader and one that I could get behind but this really damning.

The private interests wouldn’t have bothered unless Brown’s PFI had been sufficiently generous.

He just wanted spending off the books.

Because it wasn’t enough of a concern to even make the list. That graph shows you quite clearly the issues that voters care about and will form the rationale for their voting decisions.

😂😂

No but Howard would have done.

Good job the Tories were in opposition then.

Oh hang on, it was Labour that brokered and pursued the Iraq war, wasn’t it?

Of course they wouldn’t. In fact part of the reason it scaled back was not enough was in it for the private sector. The other reasons out being a terrible way to raise funds.

And that’s with colossal mark ups paid for by the tax payer but magicked off the gov books,

I'm not a Labour supporter so your whataboutery won't work here.

Your claim that she didn't trash the economy appears to be because she was forced to resign because she was trashing the economy and lots of work went into rectifying her economy trashing.

BIossomtoes · 24/02/2024 13:52

The private interests wouldn’t have bothered unless Brown’s PFI had been sufficiently generous.

The contracts were individually negotiated by the body paying for them. They didn’t need to charge £200 to put in an extra electrical socket in 2005. There was ample profit to be made without that kind of nonsense. A team of fuckwits with zero commercial experience negotiated that.

I think they like to forget that and have that article handy at all times just in case ;

IClaudine · 24/02/2024 14:03

Plenty of Tories voted for war in Iraq, including Cameron, Johnson and May.

My apologies. But in fairness you did give every sign of being a Labour supporter.

If you’re a LibDem I am stumped. Apart from their - essentially beneficial - part in the coalition, I can find nothing to say about them.

But as I fully expect the Libs to be the official opposition after the next GE, it should provide some much needed relief for the cupboard of embarrassing Liberal nonsenses that’s been mostly - but not entirely- empty since Jeremy Thorpe’s downfall.

Whataboutery will be big business on here in a few months. I’m looking for massive returns on the Labour fans’ chants about whataboutery over the last few years: “but Boris!”

noblegiraffe · 24/02/2024 14:07

Because I think that Liz Truss trashed the economy? I think you'll find that's a rather more widely held view than that.

Interesting that you're now casting about to find other political parties to throw shit at. It suggests that you have given up trying to defend the Tory fiscal responsibility line.

Notonthestairs · 24/02/2024 14:07

Well pretending that Johnson as one of the three PMs we've had since 2019 has had no influence over current events & politics would be quite odd.

BIossomtoes · 24/02/2024 14:07

But as I fully expect the Libs to be the official opposition after the next GE

Oh dear. Now that would be a miracle of epic proportions. They’re currently on 9%. 😭

How can we know? And it may well have been that a PM Howard would have been honest about the reasons for supporting the war.

Not lying about WMD and 45 minutes to Armageddon would at least have been some improvement.

justasking111 · 24/02/2024 14:10

Wales, we booted out the following and nationalised it

Trains we booted out virgin because they were more expensive took control. After Chester it's a shit show

Arriva bus service we nationalised bought it up. They're cancelling buses left and right.

Cardiff airport failed so we bought it, they've cancelled destinations left and right

Caernarfon airport, we bought it failed.

Steel , we've propped up for years the Indians are laughing.

Tree planting another failure.

NHS OH joy we came out of special measures and went back in post covid.

We spent 4.5 million on a farm to hold green man then a pair of ospreys nested so we can't hold green man.

There are more fuck ups Which seriously affect tourism. 20 mph on most roads. Tourism tax looming.

Be glad you live in England

noblegiraffe · 24/02/2024 14:11

You seem to be suggesting that trains, buses and planes are running just fine in England? Confused

They're not nationalised so the taxpayer isn't picking up the bill.

My council tax has risen 20% in 12 months. We honestly can't afford any more vanity projects

I live in Wales, having lived in England for 35 years. I find things fine here on a day to day basis, although obviously lack of funding is a serious issue. I have never regretted moving here.

Transport is not as good as where I used to live, but most places don't have transport as good as Labour-run London.

I don't think that has happened everywhere in Wales. Mine hasn't gone up 20% in 12 months.
