What happened in the House of Commons tonight?

I'm struggling to understand what is going on and would be grateful is someone can explain to me in simple terms.

Why were Labour worried about the safety of MPs?

Why were the SNP unhappy?

Why were the Tories unhappy?

What's likely to happen next?

Are MPs who don't take a Pro-Palestinian stance really putting their lives at risk?

He is a horror.

His acolytes sniffing around for his job are no improvement 🙄

I wish it was the case but anti semitism has been a long standing issue in the Labour Party for DECADES or have you conveniently rewritten history.

I was hoping they'd all been flushed out along with Corbyn

LimeViewer · 23/02/2024 22:42

Surely drakeford has just succumbed to the family stress, first his son then covid. In covid he did the whole closing aisles thing, he's just completely worn out.

Maybe have a look at what Truss, Anderson and Braverman have been saying

I agree on the NI option. The point is that a Labour MP is proposing something that is fully pro-woman.

Apart from that you've drunk the Kool-Aid on Labour re self-ID and trans, but this is MN so not surprising.

It's not "drinking Kool Aid" to see how Labour have treated gender critical members, up to and including ejection. It's not "drinking Kool Aid" to note that Starmer refuses to define a woman when challenged to.

Not according to insiders at the senedd. He's got form going back to his days as health minister.

At least they're free to speak.

Here for the die hard Tory’s cumming their pants at the thought that this will cost labour the election. Meanwhile in the real world absolutely no one gives a shit about some protocols in the HoC, other than to think the whole lot of them looked completely idiotic. The British public want a ceasefire. End of. I’ve not heard any real world criticism for the speaker today. In fact most right wing commentators I’ve heard have been quite sympathetic to him. He will not resign. There are reports coming out today that he was threatened by Simon Heart whilst there is no evidence whatsoever that Starmer pressured him. Get a grip.

This.

AdamRyan · 23/02/2024 23:01

EasternStandard · 23/02/2024 22:29

Labour are the ones with the weak position on this hence the potential revolt and avoidance

Starmer avoided it and Hoyle helped out but it doesn’t resolve the core issue for Labour

As @LimeViewer intelligently pointed out the voting couldn’t go with the SNP for a U.K. gov position

Edited

It was a UK gov debate with SNP MPs in the HoC so yes they could. What an ignorant comment.

Better the devil you know.

Sarcastic Joke GIF

Quite. Who wouldn't want more CoL increases, increasingly extremist rhetoric and public money being siphoned to support rich Tories. Oh yes, and the ability to break the law in "limited and specific" circumstances and lie continuously. Sounds like just what we need.

Opinion, yes

Spouting hatred and racism on national TV, in a national newspaper, on international stage, no

We will wait and see what Sunak's reaction will be.

AdamRyan · 23/02/2024 23:15

EasternStandard · 23/02/2024 22:14

Yes I get you ‘love’ Starmer so your posts are not surprising

You are hardly going to acknowledge his actions to avoid a 100 MP revolt.

I do love Starmer. I think he's a principled man, I'm impressed he managed to unite the party post Corbyn and crack down on anti semitism. He's built a great team around him and has policies I really like, such as halving violence against women and girls, VAT on private school fees (which are a luxury IMO) and taxing non doms properly. I think he's great and I'm not ashamed of that.

Based on other threads we've been on, you love Braverman and Rwanda, so hardly impartial. At least I'm transparent where my support is, so people can judge my posts in that context.

The SNP and the Conservatives did not give MPs or the public the option they actually want, which is a ceasefire and condemnation of Hamas. That was Labour's position. Why do you think party politics should trump "the will of the people" in the case of the Gaza war?

LimeViewer · 23/02/2024 23:16

The snp used the words collective punishment. Whilst I agree personally, that is an accusation of war crimes which the UN has not accepted as yet, plus we are allied with Israel and provide many of their weapons.
If 100 labour mps agreed with this motion so it passed we would be going beyond the UN and saying the UK gov thinks Israel is commiting at least war crimes if not genocide.
Which they probably are. But we can't say that!

Don't be gross and maybe have some respect. Honestly 🙄

LimeViewer · 23/02/2024 23:18

Hence why labour were determined not to let the public see that happen. It undermines the confidence in Keir on the world stage as a potential leader. And his lack of control of the party, that his mps either don't get it or don't care.

LimeViewer · 23/02/2024 23:20

You really do like to try to shut down facts with emotional blackmail. It's a mean trait. Try persuading with arguments instead of emotions.

Haha again no 😂

I don’t particularly love politicians no

I take an interest in some politics and economics and discuss it on a chat forum

I likely have different views on various things but that’s the point of a forum otherwise you may as well join a Labour I love Starmer FB page and hear no other views

As for transparent I don’t hide my views, why bother doing that

I feel sorry for Starmer some of his MPs Sheesh. They fight like ferrets in a sack with each other.

Holding any political party together these days is a thankless task.

This is it. Out of all the rehashing of typical insults on the thread this was worth the insight

Notonthestairs · 23/02/2024 23:23

If you genuinely concerned about following conventions you'd have been equally angry when May/Johnson/Truss ignored them.

Right. So you weren't busy posting that we should listen to one Australian MP as the authoritative source on why Rwanda was necessary? You don't hang out on FWR claiming Badenoch is right?

Honestly. I'm transparent about my views. Why don't you do the same? It's pretty clear you love the Tories. Stick to your principles, everyone is entitled to a view. No need to be ashamed.

I think what I'm taking from this thread is right wing posters have nothing left to argue. Election tomorrow please so this stops. Its ridiculous.
