What happened in the House of Commons tonight?

I'm struggling to understand what is going on and would be grateful is someone can explain to me in simple terms.

Why were Labour worried about the safety of MPs?

Why were the SNP unhappy?

Why were the Tories unhappy?

What's likely to happen next?

Are MPs who don't take a Pro-Palestinian stance really putting their lives at risk?

He said he was "not going to get drawn in to the shrill and deliberately divisive debate that the member continuously attempts to raise".

How is that misogyny?

Oh come on. "Shrill" is only ever used against uppity women!

cardibach · 23/02/2024 18:49

Dogfisher · 23/02/2024 18:47

Well I am sure that we can all rely on posters such as yourself dragging out Johnson over and over to detract from the fuck up that Starmer is going to make.
Whatever makes you feel good.

He isn’t going to fuck up. Though I’m sure there will be things I don’t like, I’m also sure it won’t be lying, cheating and law breaking.

cardibach · 23/02/2024 18:50

Dogfisher · 23/02/2024 18:45

You think that calling a woman asking a perfectly reasonable question 'shrill' is not misogyny?
You think that labelling her concerns for women's rights and safety a 'dogwhistle' to the far right is not misogyny?

Fucking hell. 🙄Ok then.

He didn’t exactly call her shrill, though I see your point.
I don’t think one comment in the heat of debate makes someone a ‘massive misogynist’ though.

And the "ceasefire but condemn hamas" outcome is the consensus view of MPs and the public, so in my opinion the process fails if that can't be represented as an outcome of the debate.

That’s just you though who thinks it’s a good reason to break with process

Hoyle cited safety as the reason for break with it

Starmer urged it to avoid 100 MP revolt

But he didn't call Laura Anne Jones "shrill". Poor choice of words, perhaps.

Anyway. we are far off topic. I like Drakeford. I don't think he is a "massive misogynist" and nothing you have presented so far has made me change my mind.

MushMonster · 23/02/2024 18:54

LOL, neither the Labour or Tory parties are going to implode, divide into other parties or explode.
They do need good leadership, and lots of level head. Which the Tory party cannot find amonst any of their many attemps to find a Prime Minister. And there is nothing better left in their bag either.

Badenoch? A few mumsnetters seem to think she will make a good Tory leader. Though she may have burned her boats already.

Starmer will need to find a way that isn’t the speaker’s office pre vote

Well we shall have to agree to disagree on that. No one who wasn't a massive misogynist would have said what he said.

Quelle surprise. 🙄

BIossomtoes · 23/02/2024 19:07

Their track record for over spending money we don’t have and managing the economy is dire.

What happened in the House of Commons tonight?
MushMonster · 23/02/2024 19:07

That is right, he cannot use the Speaker to sort his issues.
Once was enough.
There was a point last week where I thought he better left way for another leader in the laabour party, as Starmer seems to get tangled in these webs easily. Then the chaotic vote happened. I am now not sure whether a change in leader now would be good or not, to be honest. But it is so great to count on a good one second in command, in case a change in leader is needed. A pool of good candidates behind Starmer would be a great asset.

I think Starm has already lied as of this week trying to avoid the revolt, he also lies when he says women have penises.

It’s worth remembering he also broke the law with his curry party during lockdown but got off on the back of a few favours. Starm is no angel - and he is going to make a shit PM.

BIossomtoes · 23/02/2024 19:14

That would be why he was investigated and not prosecuted. How many prosecutions were there at No 10? 120 wasn’t it? Including the current PM. Will Starmer be as shit a PM as Truss? Let me think about that 🤔

EasternStandard · 23/02/2024 19:05

I can agree there are misogynistic under (or even over) tones to that exchange. I didn’t like it at the time. I still don’t think it means he’s a ‘massive misogynist’. I have said things that I’m not proud of in the heat of debate.
In all honesty, I’m also aware I’ve never said anything racist etc, so I get why you might think it’s his real views coming out. Not his finest moment. I don’t think it’s enough to condemn him though.

He really didn’t break the law. As both police and anyone with any memory of the rules can confirm.
Your view of what constitutes a lie is a bit skewed considering Tory lies.

He was investigated twice and cleared twice.

Seriously, this is all you Tories have?

Nope. It was a bent investigation carried out by a politically sympathetic police force.

Newchapterbeckons · 23/02/2024 19:25

It was another ‘Hoyle’ moment only this time with Durham police force.

You really are delusional.
if I’d noticed it was you I wouldn’t have replied said already said I’d disengage.
but just as an aside - doesn’t matter if it was pre planned as it was legal anyway…
