It's not new, it's seven hours away from home, it'd be a second home boohiss until we retire, it needs a lot of work. It's been on the market for a year and has no kitchen. It's so remote we'd need a starlink to be able to work or call an ambulance.
I have the visual equivalent of a tin ear when it comes to decorating and I'm so excited I could cry (I did cry when we visited)

Oh, congratulations! Enjoy!

liveforsummer · 17/04/2024 07:36

It's been a depressing enough winter here in a much drier Scottish city so definitely wouldn't be for me, however a lovely idea and you're probably made of tougher stuff. Would love to see what you do with it. I imagine you can get oil fired agas?!

QueenofSnark · 17/04/2024 11:06

Do keep sharing your house renovation story and what life is like OP. I'm so jealous!

I’m obviously no expert having only spent 5 nights there (must change the bedding, but I don’t have washing machine) but because it’s so open- water in front and distant ish hills the days seemed longer. We first visited in February around 4/5pm and it was still light.

Oh it's glorious, how exciting OP!

liveforsummer · 17/04/2024 21:32

@reservoirdawg the days certainly start to draw out here by February and I bet it's a delight now in April for you compared to London. The daylight is certainly one of the bonuses. The level of rain and wind and grey has been the issue this year but Tbf as it's the worst it's been in my living memory. Maybe it won't be that bad again for a long time to come!

First essential project underway. It’s the only big one although I want a solution to all the knotty pine.
I’ve bought a kitchen! It’s currently in the previous owners garage. Extraordinarily (it’s a nationwide second hand broker) it’s a mere 2 hours away. But it means after the hassle of getting into the house it’s all there. Howdens, Ikea are about the same distance and I’ve now got a kitchen for £5000 and a builder who I’ll have to really schmooze because it’s harder work for him. He is however on a day rate.
I was swithering here about the kitchen before we got the house- it’s marmite, we won’t be able use the island but we’ve got this.

How ironic given your chosen username 🙄🤔

I'm loving the renovation talk already Smile

reservoirdawg · 19/04/2024 22:14

Well it all nearly went very wrong today! Got into the house from the back, put heating on, lit fire in the kitchen, saw the thermostat was a ridiculously cold 8! 🥶
Walked through to the hall to this beautiful sight 🤯
Front door wide open since last Sunday.
Can’t believe the sheep and farm dogs hadn’t set up home.
I have set up Starlink, but slightly missing the cut offness with just the radio.

I'd love to see some more pictures of the interior while it's empty for comparison once decorated if you're willing to share?! This is all very exciting!

reservoirdawg · 20/04/2024 19:09

Very happy to share- I’ve name changed 😉
Here’s the sitting room, needs replastering and probably carpeting- I love wooden floors but DH not so keen and for insulation.

Not sure what we’ll do here. It’ll be an office, with sofa bed for guests.

Hall- eventually prettier door and possibly nicer radiator. Flooring same as kitchen?

Partial hall running into kitchen- same floor I think.

That's great @reservoirdawg. I grew up near there. I moved there from central Paris and it was a big change. I hope you enjoy the view and the sound of the wind and the rain. I still love the sound of the rain.

I had to move back to the south of England for work, but it's lovely to see your photos and enjoy it through your eyes. I hope you have a wonderful time.

Tempted to watch Balamory now.

Very different to Paris where I’ve also lived! It was a culture shock moving there from London, must have been an enormous change from the Borders! It was eerily still this morning, heard the stream and birdsong for the first time. Here’s the like glass water.

You're going to need a subscription to the People's Friend, and an electric blanket.

Not decorating tips, but I live very remotely halfway up a mountain. I can happily give you some tips to make life easier!
First one! Get a battery charger fitted to your car and a Defa heater fitted as well. Plug them in every night if it's due to drop below -8.

I’d love to hear about your life! If you ever felt like sharing.

Good luck OP! I always wanted somewhere remote, more living in the woods kind of habitat (all very idyllic) but it wasn’t to be.

It would be great if you could keep this thread alive and update us on your project.

Gladespade · 20/04/2024 19:47

Ahh this is gorgeous. Do you have an instagram account where you are documenting your renovation? This is the kind of thing I like to follow.

View, fire and dog!

Lovely and cosy. I like how the rug matches your doggo!

heldinadream · 07/04/2024 10:20

View looks amazing OP. Well done for going for it. Has it got a kitchen yet or will you be subsisting on microwave and toaster concoctions?

Actually that sounds doable. Who needs a kitchen?
I'm in the process of moving and yesterday I was looking at boxes of kitchen and dining stuff I've just packed and thinking actually I could just chuck about three boxes of this stuff out and really live much more simply (not to speak of spend way less time cooking). 😅

I’ve moved recently and it was rushed and a downsize. Everything went on the van and now I’m parting with things slowly (sentimental fool) to make space for a liveable home. So much stuff! You’re right, you don’t need half of it.
