It's not new, it's seven hours away from home, it'd be a second home boohiss until we retire, it needs a lot of work. It's been on the market for a year and has no kitchen. It's so remote we'd need a starlink to be able to work or call an ambulance.
I have the visual equivalent of a tin ear when it comes to decorating and I'm so excited I could cry (I did cry when we visited)

But you can't live your life according to "what ifs". Well you can but you'll miss out of things you really wanted to do. You have to take risks in life sometimes. It's called living. As the book says, feel the fear and do it anyway.

And careers so far and then access to schools and living near enough to parents have meant we’ve always compromised on where we live.
We don’t love where we live now and crave quiet.

You totally can live your life according to that, once you're over about seventy.

shielder · 20/02/2024 21:31

We’re mid 50’s now and plan to work until 67- rewarding jobs with lots of wfh, so we’ll get a lot of use before retirement. We have family in South Glasgow and will eventually downsize from family home in zone 2 London to a mansion flat centrally. It’s definitely not liveable in if you can’t drive. But looking at our parents we’d have 30 years of use of it.

I thought you were going to retire it but I must have misread the OP

SD1978 · 20/02/2024 21:37

@BreakfastAtMimis.....no one has wanted it for over a year. I doubt OP is single handedly bringing down the local economy, and with the amount of renovations it needs, will be employing people to work on it?......

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 20/02/2024 21:44

Looks amazing- that was our dream but pointless now due to ongoing ill health issues - strange it's been for sale for a year though - Scottish Market isn't standing still.

likepebblesonabeach · 20/02/2024 23:01

Are you Scottish op and used to the Scottish weather?
I'm only asking as granted I'm from further north than where you're moving to but the Scottish weather is brutal and that's me saying that and I've been used to it for 51 years. I don't think people get just how the lack of daylight, the wind, rain and snow can affect your mood.
I love Scotland but the older I get the weather is really taking its toll on me

MidnightMeltdown · 20/02/2024 23:07

OMG I couldn't live there - but that's probably because I've watched too many horror movies 😂

Good for you for following your dream. Not likely to get many noisy house parties and horrendous neighbours at least!

Bit of a contract to London!

Iwantmyoldnameback · 21/02/2024 06:13

Good luck and well done following your dream. Certainly doesn't appeal to me though but I have read far too much Stephen King.

Yeah boo hiss is right! Someone who needs that home now could be living in it and making a useful, full-time contribution to the rural community and economy. But you enjoy your Pinterest board.

Jesus Christ. Imagine being this miserable

JimLaheysWhiskeyBottle · 21/02/2024 06:30

Not decorating tips, but I live very remotely halfway up a mountain. I can happily give you some tips to make life easier!
First one! Get a battery charger fitted to your car and a Defa heater fitted as well. Plug them in every night if it's due to drop below -8.

reservoirdawg · 21/02/2024 08:35

Thank you all! Noted @JimLaheysWhiskeyBottle that’s a more practical suggestion than the solid fuel rayban rabbit hole I’ve been down.
Extraordinarily it already has a car charger that fits our Hybrid.

Yes, hopefully. That would be lovely. But statistically? There's going to be a fall. Or a stroke. Or a bad reaction to something. And there they are, in the middle of nowhere.

And shafted their kids to do it

reservoirdawg · 21/02/2024 09:05

I’m not shafting my kids. They not in a position to buy yet! If we gave them deposits they’d end up with flats in the wrong place for work and ‘accidental landlords’

OP posts:
NoOrdinaryMorning · 21/02/2024 09:16

A beautiful house. It's your choice to do what you want with your money you have earned.
I personally would've given the kids a deposit BUT they'll each inherit a share of the house one day so 🤷🏼‍♀️

I do have to say though, people do need to stop buying second homes, especially in rural areas as they are the cause of local families being priced out of their home villages! Near to me, 6 different village schools have had to close due to having less than 5 pupils.... Each village is full of second/holiday homes (as well as AirBnBs but most holiday homes) which has driven up the price and priced out families so no families can afford to live there! So not only do local schools - many of which have been there for centuries - have to close due to lack of pupils, but as a result, local communities are decimated. Village Post offices & village shops being closed due to lack of customers in the winter period and the same with pubs. It's heartbreaking...

I acknowledge that none of you second-home owners have intent to cause any of this but it's the reality. Something needs to change

NoOrdinaryMorning · 21/02/2024 09:19

It's not about being this miserable, it's about entire village communities being wiped out! But that's ok right, as long as YOU aren't miserable. I'm alright Jack, right @LoudSnoringDog ?!

You said earlier in the thread that two of your kids are saving for a deposit? So how would they not be in a position to buy if you helped them with a deposit?

ohmydaysohmydaysohmydays A NEW HOUSE
reservoirdawg · 21/02/2024 09:28

I genuinely don’t think this is the case. It’s unliveable in for a family, 20 miles to schools, no land to farm. We would be buying in locally maintenance, trade, food. We can only consider it because it’d take us to within 90 mins of two sets of family and we can wfh.

OP posts:
reservoirdawg · 21/02/2024 09:33

Oh my @NoOrdinaryMorning! They’re saving and living in house shares with friends. Completely happily and appropriately for their ages and situations. If we gave them the house fund they’d be able to buy new build studios in really dodgy areas- very problematic for wfh and a long commute when they go to the office. As it is we’ll all have access to a beautiful family home.

And I do have to say, that this isn't in a village and it's been on the market for a year.

How about - isn't it wonderful that the OP wants to take on this incredible building that none of the locals want because it isn't practical for most people's modern lives and will breathe new life into it so it doesn't just become a ruin.

MidnightMeltdown · 21/02/2024 10:46

@DaBlackCatsAreDaBestCat

Her kids are adults ffs. She doesn't owe them a house deposit!

Good luck when she wants to sell it, though... All the issues that are there now, will be there then.

OP has alluded to the fact they are disappointed. Why mention it otherwise? Surely your kids come first?

reservoirdawg · 21/02/2024 11:09

@DaBlackCatsAreDaBestCats I said they’re 🙄which sums it up well. In an ideal world they’d like us living near the beautiful homes we’d helped them buy, near enough for lifts and to come over for supper which is what the status quo is, bar them owning their own homes, for the reasons above.
This costs half of one deposit, a deposit they’re not in a position to choose a home for!
Anyway dc are onboard- doesn’t mean they’re interested in star carpets.
Of more concern is the weather. It’s dreich in London today and I’m trying to work out whether it’d more be or less depressing with distant views. It was noticeably later getting dark a week ago up there because the buildings don’t get in the way!

Not my thing at all (I'm aiming to get closer to central London when I retire) but congratulations and hope you have loads of fun renovating! Getting good local trades number one priority! Google is your friend - I've often seen something I really like on Pinterest or in real life, done a reverse image search and found something very similar half the price.
