How much for this sandwich?

I was out for lunch today at a local independent cafe. Had an egg Mayo sandwich on brown bread, it came with a small amount of homemade coleslaw and salad (plain lettuce leaves with tinned sweet corn and peppers, no dressing).

How much would you expect that to cost? Lighthearted as I really enjoyed it (apart from the sad salad) - just curious!

£7 +

UltraWoman · 18/02/2024 17:55

7.50-9.50ish depending on whether micro herbs were used or not

Howmuchhh · 18/02/2024 17:55

I expected around £6.95. I’m in NE Scotland, so not big city prices or anything.

It was £9.50 😱

To sit in a café and eat? Where I live you would not get anything eat-in for less than £6.50. And tbh I think that's fair enough. I think probably anything less than a tenner (as long as the ingredients were good quality) would be fair. You're not just paying for a sandwich, you're paying to take up a table in the restaurant for 30+ mins and all the overheads that come along with that.

Howmuchhh · 18/02/2024 17:56

@UltraWoman no micro herbs! Literally a sprinkle of plain lettuce, some chopped peppers and tinned sweet corn - that was the entirety of the salad.

I paid £7.95 for a tuna sandwich in a cafe the other day. It was literally two slices of bread, some tuna mayo, cut into quarters and slapped on a plate with some cucumber, lettuce and tomato on the side.

Xmasbaby11 · 18/02/2024 17:57

I would expect about £7. It’s a very simple sandwich but all the overheads mean it’d never be much less regardless of ingredients.

Howmuchhh · 18/02/2024 17:57

@Fargo79 yes, absolutely fair point! I expected around £6.95 for a decent sandwich, I was just really underwhelmed by the sad salad and £9.50 price tag.

Costa mass produced stuff no trimmings are just under £6 with all the economies of scale

TheThingIsYeah · 18/02/2024 17:59

Nine paand fifty?!!

Most things have doubled in price since that bug went round that everyone was talking about.

I bet your wages haven't doubled. Mine haven't.

Businesses will rinse fewer and fewer customers with ever increasing prices until something gives.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 18/02/2024 17:59

£5-6, that’s what I’ve paid recently.

Hot drinks seem extortionate though

clary · 18/02/2024 18:00

Hmm £9.50 is a lot @Howmuchhh but I was going to say £7-8 tbh. That's pretty much what a sandwich costs in a cafe now, esp an independent tbh.

The pp who says £3.25 has clearly not been to a cafe lately.

InsidiousRasperry · 18/02/2024 18:00

I’d say £7/£7.50

Just seen the actual price, that’s wild.

Riverlee · 18/02/2024 18:02

In a cafe, I’d pay £6-10 Always surprises me how much a basic sandwich costs in a cafe.

BCBird · 18/02/2024 18:03

Ridiculous

TheChosenTwo · 18/02/2024 18:04

The cafe on my road charged £8.50 for a sandwich with a set choice of fillings and a little salad on the side. It closed down in under a year - location must have been partly contributed to this, it was really difficult to get to with not much passing trade, on crossroads by a school but opened too late to catch and post school drop off traffic and closed before school pickup, no parking and not really a popular walking route. I stopped in a couple of times but it felt ridiculous paying £8.50 for a sandwich when I was a 5 minute walk from home - I did it because I wanted to support and independent local business.
It was a shame that they closed but I wasn’t in the least bit surprised.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 18/02/2024 18:13

I’d say £5 ish but some of the yummy mummy ones by us it’s well over £9. I don’t go in those places

Nonewclothes2024 · 18/02/2024 18:50

About £7-8 ?

ifonly4 · 18/02/2024 18:53

Egg mayo doesn't seem to be a thing around here, but I don't know anywhere I could buy a sandwich, coleslaw, salad garnish for less than £7.95.

DrinksbytheSea · 18/02/2024 18:53

For an egg sandwich? Crikey.

I’d have said £4.95 for that in a cafe near me and I would still feel like I was being ripped off.

aitchteeaitch · 18/02/2024 18:53

For £9.50 I'd be expecting a smoked salmon sandwich and a lovingly presented organic herb fest of a salad.

Allwelcone · 18/02/2024 19:47

Shit a brick. Was the egg mayo from golden eggs?
Did they give you a foot massage afterwards?

Alwaysgoingforit · 18/02/2024 19:51

Why would anyone pay those prices if they knew before hand?? Even £6 is stupid imo.

Nightowl1234 · 18/02/2024 19:55

commonground · 18/02/2024 17:49

Well if you'd bought it in Waitrose it would have been around £2.50.

So in a cafe with a bit of lettuce - £3.25? £4 at a push?

£3.25 😂 Don’t we all wish! Maybe it was that in 1993.

That is wild! I’m in London, and even we wouldn’t pay that down here for a regular sandwich!
