Why was a glass of orange juice a starter?

I learned this recently. Is it true? What don't I know that might help me understand this?

Glass bottles - mostly rinsed and returned, but we had bottle banks from at least 1980.

Or 5p back in the Corona bottle.

1950s - dandelion and burdock from the Corona man.

Re a glass of orange juice or even a little glass of tomato juice being a starter, I don't know if anyone's mentioned Berni Inns on this thread. In the 70s a witty man said, "Life is a journey from Berni to Berni."

Had forgotten about oj as a starter. Berni Inns. People thought it was a big night out which I suppose it was. No takeaways tho apart from fish and chips. Curry houses were fewer. No shortage of smoke filled pubs and clubs tho.
