Tory minister texts: "We're not as angry at the speaker as we're pretending to be." (Remember, this is supposed to be a debate about Gaza.)

Multiple Tory MPs say Penny Mordaunt pulled tonight's amendment because govt did not have votes to support Israel 'humanitarian pause' motion.

Rumour is that too many Tories had told Whips they were minded to back the Labour motion in favour of full fat ceasefire...

Good for them

AdamRyan · 21/02/2024 20:43

In some ways I love it. Starmer has neatly managed to avoid a whole "antisemitic" smear the Tories were hoping for, and a rebellion. As a Labour supporter I'm happy about that. But it's disgraceful it came to this.

John Steven's reporting very similar -

Tory MPs say the Government’s boycott of proceedings tonight wasn’t actually about anger with the Speaker, but not having the votes

They say the whips had warned they had too many rebels who were about to vote for Labour’s amendment

Badenoch is rumoured to be out.

I do hope so, but I won't believe it till I see it.

She can do her "mulling" from the back benches if so.

Why?

Badenoch is a strong and determined lady who always sticks by her principles.

IClaudine · 21/02/2024 20:37

Any possibility that Badenoch is resigning in order to launch a leadership challenge?

Just call a GE for god's sake.

That wouldn't surprise me. The sainted Kemi cares about her own advancement - nothing else

That’s what Chris Bryant seems to be saying too. I think the plan was that the Tories would vote down the Labour amendment, which would then be followed by the SNP motion and if that failed the government amendment. The wheels came off when it became clear that the Tories didn’t have the votes to vote down the Labour amendment or to get their amendment passed.

They then seem to have forced a procedural division right at the last minute and walked slowly through the division chambers because they were under the impression that the motion would fail if it wasn’t sorted by 7pm. Unfortunately for them the standing orders say that the vote can take place after 7pm under certain circumstances.

Cornettoninja · 21/02/2024 21:11

Rishi’s plans is going swimmingly I see.

This current government are just embarrassing themselves over and over again. Clinging on for an autumn GE is just an act of self harm at this point.

Please nobody vote for this man he will drag us into a war

cakeorwine · 21/02/2024 22:15

Whilst all this political farce is going on, there is still death and destruction in Gaza.

I was listening to the radio today. There were 2 Israeli hostages freed by special force a while ago. 70 people (including many civilians) were killed in the raid to rescue them.

RafaistheKingofClay · 21/02/2024 22:45

I read about that at the time. It was about the time Netanyahu rejected the ceasefire I think. I know that Hamas had put things into the agreement that Netanyahu was never going to agree to but I remember wondering about what the hostages or their family would be thinking. Realistically Israel are going to have to negotiate to get those hostages back. Taking them back by force doesn’t look particularly likely.

IClaudine · 22/02/2024 07:35

Liz Truss in full conspiracy mode. All the quangos were out to get her and the civil service is full of trans activities and environmental extremists:

Makes a change from all those notoriously left wing bankers and economists being out to get her.

Interesting run down of yesterday's shambles. I am not sure I approve of what Stamer did, I think he should have allowed a free vote. I also think it shows he has a ruthless streak. Which is possibly a good quality in terms of being PM.

None of the parties are coming out looking good so rather than playing the blame game they should start taking responsibility for their actions.

I still really do not understand so have more or less given up. I think Joe Public will just shrug this off as 'typical or parliament' and it will not make a dent in any voting intentions.

I do think Labour in particular is running rather scared in its strongholds with high Muslim populations and seems rather befuddled as to what to do for the best. The SNP seems less ambivalent on the issue - but then have , in its recent iteration, had a clearer anti war stance. Likewise Greens and Lib Dems.

Piggywaspushed · 22/02/2024 08:36

The Labour camps in Scotland seem to be crowing over the SNP revealing themselves as Tartan Tories, however.
