I'm struggling to keep up with their shenanigans now.
What an absolute shower. Embarrassing.

Notonthestairs · 21/02/2024 18:56

So both Conservatives and SNP have walked out and now the press is banned from reporting.
Is that it?

They are having a vote on whether journalists and the public are allowed to watch. If that vote is yes, I wonder how that applies to MPs who also work for GB news.

From Jess Philips:

I'm sat by the lobby watching Tories being instructed to go slow through the lobby's so there is no chance to vote as it cuts of the time. They are laughing about it. Democracy

RafaistheKingofClay · 21/02/2024 19:04

I think calling the vote is just a delaying tactic to run down the clock so there is no time to vote tonight.

I am very confused and may need reminding about why a written constitution is a bad thing.

Vote on hold is private has been lost.

Hang on the speaker of the house has now turned up to make a speech.

Notonthestairs · 21/02/2024 19:04

Bloody hell.

What a farce.

ilovesooty · 21/02/2024 19:06

Philip Davies is complaining. After all the filibustering he's done, he's got a nerve.

AdamRyan · 21/02/2024 19:10

I don't even know what I think about this. I assume the Conservatives ate having a strop because their labour trap didn't work. Feel a bit bad for the SNP though, but most of all horrified the government are playing politics with a war

BestIsWest · 21/02/2024 19:14

I’ve been out and missed all this. What a shambles. Ashamed of our politics now.

AdamRyan · 21/02/2024 19:20

Poor old Lindsay Hoyle. What a poison chalice that job is. The Conservatives are an absolute disgrace Angry

RafaistheKingofClay · 21/02/2024 19:20

The SNP seem to have got absolutely stitched up. But surely there ought to be a procedure for this happening in exceptional cases.

AdamRyan · 21/02/2024 19:22

After shouts from Tory benches that Sue Gray was the senior Labour figure claimed to be influencing the Speaker's decision, Hoyle makes a robust defence.

He says "I have never met with Sue Gray today, I didn't bump into her today, I am offended by that comment and I think you would like to withdraw it.

"That is the danger - that we've ended up with this House's speculation of not what is fact and what is factual.

"I am true to this House... I tried to do what I thought was the right thing for all sides of this House."

Sad

Isn't it Starmer who is playing politics with this?
Aided and abetted by Hoyle?

tobee · 21/02/2024 19:23

I've been out all afternoon but my first thought is 🐿️. Certainly does a neat job of keeping the headlines and tomorrow's front pages away from Badenoch. Also, handily a topic that Tories think they gain from Labour issues on this

Btw who was it who was reappointed to job of Tory campaign manager at the start of the new year? 🤔

For a man who doesn't know what a woman is he's remarkably cunning.....

No I don't think so. Like I said upthread, I think both the SNP and Conservatives were motivated by a Labour rebellion. SNP were very close to Labour's position and could have updated their motion and Labour would have backed it. They didn't.

Labour MPs would have therefore to rebel to vote for the SNP amendment which is damaging for Starmer. If they didn't rebel then the motion would fall, no ceasefire, not what Labour want and also very damaging for lots of MPs who's constituents are pressuring them. So voting for the SNP amendment first was a trap for Labour.

Hoyle sprung that trap by putting Labour amendment first. The SNP wouldn't vote against that because its condoning Hamas. So then the Labour amendment passes and Conservatives either vote with Labour or look isolated by not calling for a ceasefire.

So the Conservatives have spat the dummy and flounced to avoid embarrassment. With a bit of lying thrown in, plus ca change

BIossomtoes · 21/02/2024 19:31

That’s an absolutely perfect summary @AdamRyan.

AdamRyan · 21/02/2024 19:32

Thank you! It's possible I've missed something so I'll wait for the proper experts to write their articles

IClaudine · 21/02/2024 19:32

That is a good explanation, AdamRyan.

AdamRyan · 21/02/2024 19:35

Just look at the headline. The Conservatives must be FURIOUS

Apparently the SNP motion was supposed to be a trap for Labour, so maybe they’ve just been beaten at their own game.

Tories and SNP now bleating about how they didn’t get to record their individual votes because there wasn’t a vote after they walked out and then tried to delay the vote by calling an unnecessary vote can do one.

Amazing how we’ve managed to make a vote about a ceasefire to ease a humanitarian crisis where children are dying daily all about U.K. politics. Especially when there was broad agreement on all sides about a ceasefire being necessary.

DuncinToffee · 21/02/2024 19:42

Been out and now try to catch up Shock

Result of motion for the House of Commons to sit in private:

Ayes: 20
Noes: 212

Exactly. We are an embarassment

Piggywaspushed · 21/02/2024 19:46

I dunno. I think what we are seeing is through quite an English, possibly anti SNP lens. But I am battling to understand.

The Palestinian ambassador is livid , and the SNP seems livid. Obviously the Tories will just slag everyone off so I'm ignoring them.

Am I wide of the mark here? Maybe I'm just in a conspiracy theory mood.
