Ever been on holiday where you couldn't wait to come home

OK I'm in the sun and it's February...but I'm stuck on an where nothing to do except snorkel and its too windy.

The hotel needs serious updating, there are cocks crowing all night, the breakfast was minimal. The advertised beach is lovely but literally a beach. My alternative plan of lying on the beach reading are scuppered by no umbrella or lounger.

The hire car is a worryingly battered piece of shit.

I'm being churlish but there's a long 5 days stretching out in front of me.

Honestly some stories of shit holidays would help!

Yes. Went on a family holiday (with in-laws) to a non kid friendly resort when DS was just over a year old. No pools he could just splash in as he was so small. Everything felt like a struggle. He wouldn't sleep. He wouldn't eat. Then he got a sickness bug. The end could not have come fast enough!

coxesorangepippin · 12/02/2024 14:05

Fuerteventura??

GardeningQuestionTime · 12/02/2024 14:05

This isn’t my kind of holiday at all, which is probably why I’ve done such a shit job of booking it, it’s an add on to a conference trip and not somewhere I’d have ever chosen to go.

at least I dont have kids and in laws to deal with!

Can you buy a cheap umbrella and beach mat?

Merrow · 12/02/2024 14:08

Málaga in torrential rain. Everything we could find said things along the line of "if you're unlucky enough to have half a day of rain...". It was constant the four days we were there.

It was supposed to be a nice break in the middle of IVF treatment, so didn't even have the opportunity to enjoy wine and watch the rain! And it turned out to be a failed cycle so there could have been wine...

GardeningQuestionTime · 12/02/2024 14:09

There’s no shops! Just found a tiny beach umbrella, like a stunt one….I could try that.

I get a bit fed up after a week and however lovely the resort is, I miss my home and routines.

I’ve had some fabulous holidays in 5star resorts but I’m usually rather pleased to leave.

The best holidays have been UK activity holidays. I’ve come home feeling amazing.

Oh yes I did Malaga in torrential rain…we sat and drank and ate tapas. My heart goes out to you if you couldn’t do that.

Went to the Isle Of Wight one summer with DH. It rained from the minute we got off of the ferry, to when we got back on the ferry a week later. It was the first week of August, all the walks and sitting on the beach at Ventnor we had planned were scuppered. I bought a large bag of home made fudge for my mum, woke up on the morning of my birthday (half way through the holiday) and ate the whole bag full in one go I was so depressed. We had to spend loads of money we hadn’t planned on spending to do indoor things along with everyone else.

Weve never been back.

Went to Portugal with DH years ago. Our first holiday together.

DH burnt feet on first day.
DH got bitten to glory by something,
absolutely covered in bites.
Our bathroom ceiling in apartment started to collapse so had to move to another one.
On last night DH had prawns for dinner. He woke up in the night vomiting. Somehow made it through coach journey and flight home. It was a disaster. 😪

Oh God yes!

Worst one that immediately springs to mind was Sri Lanka 2018. We are very well travelled and had heard great things about the island so thought we’d give it a try.

Our first mistake was booking 11 nights purely in Bentota. Bit of a grubby little village - although some terrific restaurants - but we were constantly followed by beggars and the locals looked at us as if we were aliens despite it being a main holiday beach resort. No supermarkets, just little local shops which just sold rice fruit and veg. The hotel - 5* - was supposed to be wonderful. One of the pools was actually closed for refurbishment and the second pool was overrun with children from wealthy families who spoke to the staff appallingly. The cleaning standards were dreadful too and certainly nowhere near comparable with hotels in the Far East for instance.

Despite the good food and great weather I could not wait to leave. I am constantly reading of how beautiful the island is and how friendly the people are. We obviously got it seriously wrong somehow.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 12/02/2024 14:33

A UK holiday many years ago. When we got to the apartment there was a mobile phone with the number to the local neighbourhood police programmed in in the event there were problems with boy racers revving their engines to get up the hill. The apartment was above a fish shop and the bins absolutely stank and we were woken up to the sound of the bloody Wurzels most mornings. Add to that we were both ill so we couldn't go home early.

notprincehamlet · 12/02/2024 14:38

Yes - Norfolk

Notevenslightlydamp · 12/02/2024 14:47

A pp mentioned Fuerteventura - that was a crap holiday, I was practically pebble dashed from all the sand storms.
The absolute worst was Disneyland in Orlando - the food was shocking, everything was so expensive, it was far too crowded, adults elbowing children out of the way to get in the front for the parade, crap hotel... I cried every day and could not wait to go home.

Magenta65 · 12/02/2024 14:49

tenerife last summer…worst holiday I’ve ever had

Roselilly36 · 12/02/2024 14:52

Menorca, late Aug, horrendously hot, no air con or breeze, apartment full of ants, couldn’t wait to come home.

RicePuddingWithCinnamon · 12/02/2024 14:53

Yes. I went with my in laws. They sucked the joy out of everything.

TheGrin · 12/02/2024 14:54

Majorca. August. Pissed it down.

MyFavouritePlace · 12/02/2024 15:01

Had a disaster of a holiday many years ago. Got food poisoning on the second say and spent most of the time on the loo.
Was a miserable week.

themusingsofaninsomniac · 12/02/2024 15:03

Where are you so I don't go there 🤣🤣

NellysCheekPlaster · 12/02/2024 15:05

Not mine but an ex-neighbour of mine. She booked a holiday in Tenerife for her and her friend to get some winter sun.

Both in their late-70s. Both widowed. Both quiet, book-ish, church-going women.
Somehow she misread and misunderstood the website and booked them into an 18-30 resort.
Every other apartment in the complex was young, rowdy, incomprehensibly naked people, getting drunk, taking drugs, getting laid, vomiting, passing out anywhere and everywhere they could find.

Still, they looked forward to the vineyard tour she'd booked for them on day two. Only 'vineyard tour' turned out to be a massive 12-hour bar crawl through San Antonio. About an hour into the 'vineyard tour', they decided they'd had enough and asked the reps to help them get back to the complex and then move to different accommodation.
But the holiday reps were terrible, as bad as the holiday-makers. They didn't give a shit and made no attempts to help.
Fortunately, a group of the young folks took pity on the two ladies and helped them get into another hotel (albeit a bit grubby) for the rest of their holiday.

the80sweregreat · 12/02/2024 15:12

Nellyscheekyppaster
That made me laugh so much
Bless those poor ladies ..
The reps sound awful though , at least you'd try and help to move them somewhere more suitable.

the80sweregreat · 12/02/2024 15:13

My worst holiday was in Zante
They had frequent power cuts , the hotel didn't have a pool , the locals seemed to hate us and the weather in September was hit and miss.
The reps were surly and it was a late flight home ( always the worst )
