Anyone switching their doorbells after Rings price hike?

£3.49 a month just to see who was at the door was bad enough but a fiver?! Everything is going up except the income 🙄

So I'm looking for a new video doorbell to save up for. Anyone have a Eufy or a Blink doorbell? Are they any good? Any others you might recommend?

Get rid of it. No one needs a ring doobell. We have a door knocker. No bell. It's great.

I'm honestly over the moon for you but that was entirely unhelpful. Thanks.

Get rid of everything. You don't need it. Camp fires and smock dresses from here on in. You're welcome.

I pay for it yearly so haven't noticed a price hike yet.

If it's a big jump I might just go back to the old style door bell.

BranchGold · 12/02/2024 11:10

I have a eufy and it seems to do the job, no subscription fees.

I find it reassuring to check the car outside and for safety reasons.

24hrCarer · 12/02/2024 11:13

Some people do need ring doorbells for evidence purposes. Police won't act on antisocial behaviour without evidence and a camera stopped the behaviour as they knew they were being recorded.

OP, I didn't know the prices are going up. Seems a bit of a big hike but I will still pay it I suppose.

OldTinHat · 12/02/2024 11:14

I'm looking to switch from my Ring doorbell too. Its stopped charging up properly anyway. The price hike has been the final straw.

I'll watch this thread with interest!

brightyellowflower · 12/02/2024 11:16

Threads galore about the cost of living and how are we all coping, yet people are happy to throw away £60 a year on a doorbell (never mind the intial cost)
It's hardly essential to life.
If it going up to a fiver is a problem, you can't afford it.

TheSpruce · 12/02/2024 11:17

I didn't even realize you had to pay for Ring! Get yourself a Eufy or some other mini cam, one off purchase, connects via WiFi. Why pay for something quite pointless?

GodspeedJune · 12/02/2024 11:17

I have a nest/ google doorbell and wish the subscription was this price! Mine went up from £100 p/a to £120 at the end of last year. I wouldn’t be without a video doorbell, it was used to secure convictions in court with a horrible neighbour.

May start looking for an alternative with more reasonable subscription fees though.

Bloody hell that's outrageous! What do you get for that?

I posted this on the other thread but might be handy if you have more than one device.

We have a doorbell and a camera covering the front of our house. The protect plus yearly subscription, is £80 and covers the household, no matter how many devices we have. We currently have the basic plan on each of the devices as that is £70 a year, so when the renewal is up, we will switch to the protect plan. We need CCTV for insurance purposes for one of our vehicles and this was the cheapest and easiest method for us.

BreakfastAtMimis · 12/02/2024 11:20

I didn't realise you had to pay a subscription for them! That's bonkers, just get a normal doorbell.

TheDowagerDoughnut · 12/02/2024 11:21

Not quite what you were asking but I have been toying with the idea of getting a Ring doorbell for the last year or so. The price hike has made me mind up not to bother.

Don't blame you for thinking of going with someone else - I think we're about to see a bit of a smart tech reduction as they all seek to make/keep profits by introducing or upping sub fees and everyone gets sick of them.

I'm pretty tech-interested but even I am starting to grow weary with what feels like my tech constantly scrounging for more money. I've been thinking of ditching Alexa for the same reason: she is constantly upselling features to me and I don't want her to be so chatty - even with the low chat option selected. If sub fees get introduced also, as I think has been rumoured... I'm out.

TeenLifeMum · 12/02/2024 11:22

Stupid question but I thought the subscription was for recordings but live video was subscription free? Can’t you just move to that rather than replace the door bell? I was looking to buy a ring doorbell more because we need a new doorbell than we need any recordings so planned to without paying the subscription. Will that not work?

We have a Eufy, it is good but doesn’t always connect very quickly if you want to speak to the person at the door. That’s rarely an issue for us as I WFH. I haven’t used a Ring to compare, so it might be the same.

It has been useful when the milkman has delivered too few bottles of milk & we have been confident it wasn’t stolen!

Annoyingly that’s the only plan that offers access to 24/7 recordings. Only for 10 days though. It was £4 p/m when I first got the doorbell so a huge hike!

andymary · 12/02/2024 11:28

We just DIY installed a CCTV camera (Brand: Tapo). Stick a memory card in it and it'll record everything 24/7. On the app you can watch it live, or play the previous footage from anywhere. You can set up alerts just like Ring has. They have built-in sound, so you can both listen and talk through it. No subscriptions required.
The cameras are around £40-£50 and the memory card £10.

Oblomov23 · 12/02/2024 11:29

I heard about this, will need to check with Dh about our ring doorbell.

CornishTiger · 12/02/2024 11:33

All of you would don’t see the point of it have never clearly experienced or have knowledge of those with neighbour issues, ex partner or similar causing issues, general anti social behaviour issues or persistent criminal behaviour in your area. What lovely lives and closed minds you have!

Yep, followed Martin Lewis advice on this. Cancelled, resubscribed, next time I need to worry about it is Feb next year.

We like our holidays, so being able to view from afar and download is crucial.

TeenLifeMum · 12/02/2024 11:53

“Crucial”? Crucial for what? If someone comes to my door when I’m not there then I don’t answer and they contact me a different way it leave parcels with neighbours. I understand rings are helpful but really unsure why they would be crucial. Genuinely curious not critical.

TeenLifeMum · 12/02/2024 11:53

I too go on holidays 😂
