Anyone switching their doorbells after Rings price hike?

£3.49 a month just to see who was at the door was bad enough but a fiver?! Everything is going up except the income 🙄

So I'm looking for a new video doorbell to save up for. Anyone have a Eufy or a Blink doorbell? Are they any good? Any others you might recommend?

We use blink which is connected to our Alexa account. We have the sync module so have a usb stick in that to record clips - no subscription required.

It is however a bit of a nightmare to install as it requires wired installation.

RuthW · 12/02/2024 12:10

I think it's good value for security and knowing where my parcels are

TheSpruce · 12/02/2024 12:11

Me and PPS saying they're unnecessary mean that there are many options available without pointless subscription fees.

Until this thread I didn't even realise people would think to pay for such a service!

We have a eufy, it's great, no subscription. We've added cameras and contact sensors to it too

PuppyMonkey · 12/02/2024 12:16

I’ve got a eufy one, no subscription, easy to use. We have it mainly cos DP works in his shed at top of garden and can now answer the door from there - it’s all hooked up to Alexa etc.

Isobel201 · 12/02/2024 13:09

I got one for Christmas, and tbh despite the price hike I'm keeping it. Its not just the doorbell, its the fact that its got a camera as well and its already caught one would be thief who was looking around for things to steal. In my mind, its a price worth paying to protect the car and my valuables being stolen.

gamerchick · 12/02/2024 13:10

If you cancel now, get your refund and then take it up again. It'll lock you back in to the 35 quid for another year.

gamerchick · 12/02/2024 13:11

As has been said already Grin

“Crucial”? Crucial for what? If someone comes to my door when I’m not there then I don’t answer and they contact me a different way it leave parcels with neighbours. I understand rings are helpful but really unsure why they would be crucial. Genuinely curious not critical.

I got one due to our house being targeted and the police couldn't do anything without evidence. It was crucial in order to get it all to stop. Now that I have it, I wouldn't get rid of it for the same reason.

We have a eufy, its been great. I think it was 150 to buy but no ongoing subscriptions and I installed it myself in 5 minutes (technology not being a strong point of mine). I did look at ring as it's cheaper to buy but it was a nobrainer to go with the eufy as there are no monthly costs forevermore.

MarmiteChocolate · 12/02/2024 13:28

To add, the main reason we got the eufy was to have coverage for our EV charging point on the drive, to stop the local teens coming and trying to yank it off the wall or whatever. It's also handy for answering the doorbell when I'm out though.

notknowledgeable · 12/02/2024 13:31

I need mine for peace of mind, after an attempted break in when I was here alone. The police said I was chosen most likely as the first house in the row without a video doorbell. Now I have one, no further break ins attempted.

TheTimeIsNowMaybeNow · 12/02/2024 13:33

I have a blink but had to invest in some rechargeable batteries as it really gets through them

Lindy2 · 12/02/2024 13:35

Video doorbells or cameas are actually a very good burglar deterant. I'm very happy with my Ring doorbell but I'm deciding whether or not to pay the subscription for recordings. You can have the bell without paying but it won't store recordings.

Threads galore about the cost of living and how are we all coping, yet people are happy to throw away £60 a year on a doorbell (never mind the intial cost)
It's hardly essential to life.
If it going up to a fiver is a problem, you can't afford it.

RING are great and I think £60 is worth it as a one off. Have you actually got one yourself?. I've cancelled mine as I don't want a camera that I'm constantly having to pay for I would rather invest in another brand so following OP.

I use it when the DC are playing out in summer, when I'm holiday and talk to the parcel delivery people when I'm not at home.

Can I ask how much you paid for the Eufy please.

I have a eufy and it seems to do the job, no subscription fees.

I find it reassuring to check the car outside and for safety reasons.

Same. Had a Eufy for two years and no subscription fees. It's been brilliant. We even had video footage to hand over to the police once last year after an incident in the street involving vandalism.

QforCucumber · 12/02/2024 13:47

Ours is the Reolink - DH bought this after we realised the quality of the videos stored on the Ring cloud weren't the best, it's great for quality purposes as it's made by a CCTV company, however it's not without its flaws as the app can be really sluggish at times

megletthesecond · 12/02/2024 14:00

I'll pay for it again this year but might stop next time and just keep 24hrs footage.

I'm not sure I want to have to remember to check it every day before it's lost though.

waterdusky · 12/02/2024 15:25

I have a eufy. I don't know how a ring works but the eufy only records and saves if something triggers it. It's great if someone comes onto my property within its vicinity but it's not a replacement for proper cctv.

Appledrop · 12/02/2024 15:32

We have a Nest camera that we've had for many years and only pay £40 per year for it. We got it before the new pricing structure was introduced and decided not to switch over. We're glad we made that decision because the pricing for it is now quite expensive.

It's less than a pound a week.

Most people spend ten times that on coffee.

Pollllo · 12/02/2024 16:26

I had a ring for years but it died last year and I replaced it with an eufy, I’m pretty happy with it and no subscription was a plus.

Whereas the Reolink is 27/7 recording, which has been very useful this week when police have been knocking on doors looking for footage of a fatal car accident nearby
