Anyone switching their doorbells after Rings price hike?

£3.49 a month just to see who was at the door was bad enough but a fiver?! Everything is going up except the income 🙄

So I'm looking for a new video doorbell to save up for. Anyone have a Eufy or a Blink doorbell? Are they any good? Any others you might recommend?

Blink with a sync module and an SD card. It isn’t hard wired, just runs off Wi-Fi. I’ve got two cameras and a doorbell on the sync module. No subscription required.

purdypuma · 12/02/2024 18:24

I have a blink doorbell at my front door & blink camera & floodlight for the back garden. It's 2.50 a month for an individual device to store clips but if you buy the sync module (mine was included with floodlight) then you can avoid it my using a USB stick.

purdypuma · 12/02/2024 18:25

Apologies for the typos...you can avoid paying 2.50 a month by putting a USB stick into the sync module. I have non wired for all.

We’ve a Eufy and it can sometimes be a bit slow to connect but like the previous posters I WFH so it’s not a problem usually.

Absolutely no way would I pay for a subscription service.

Pushkinini · 12/02/2024 18:39

We have a wireless Blink doorbell with the usb sync module. It's a bit slow to show the door and only DH seems to get the notifications on his phone, but it does the job for us.

App13 · 12/02/2024 18:41

I'm keeping it ,I've had it since 2017 but I'm not paying subscription.

So it'll alert me , but I can't see history.

I'm fine with that.

I wonder if they'll reduce the price after mass exodus

PSEnny · 12/02/2024 18:46

Getting one due to an issue with a neighbour, anti social behaviour etc is understandable. Getting one just to see who rings your doorbell is ridiculous. You’re not in, why do you need to know? If it was important they would come back. It smacks of paranoid American society where they’re brainwashed into thinking there is a threat everywhere.

pleasestoprainingplease · 12/02/2024 18:48

We also cancelled and resubscribed at the lower price for another year. The details are on the Martin Lewis page

pleasestoprainingplease · 12/02/2024 18:49

I'm glad we have one as needed it when the bin men smashed into my car. You saw and heard it all but it happened at 6am and they just drove off. Showed them the footage and they apologised and sorted it out.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 12/02/2024 18:50

I have a Tapo doorbell, it is great and the subscription is entirely optional it works without

TeaSoakedDisasterMagnet · 12/02/2024 19:00

Literally swapped from Ring to Eufy today to avoid the increase in fees.

C1N1C · 12/02/2024 11:36

Yep, followed Martin Lewis advice on this. Cancelled, resubscribed, next time I need to worry about it is Feb next year.

We like our holidays, so being able to view from afar and download is crucial.

I did this too to buy me time until next February

OhcantthInkofaname · 12/02/2024 20:15

In the US it is going up 25%. Mine does not renew until November.

Stupid question but I thought the subscription was for recordings but live video was subscription free? Can’t you just move to that rather than replace the door bell? I was looking to buy a ring doorbell more because we need a new doorbell than we need any recordings so planned to without paying the subscription. Will that not work?

You’re correct, live video but no recordings is subscription free. That’s what we do. We just needed a new doorbell and wanted one that would ring our phones as well as the bell inside the house. Tbh I didn’t realise it would be subscription for recordings but we didn’t need it for that. We just used the first few months free recordings then switched to live feed only.

We are lucky not to feel we need it for neighbour issues or safety like some do. And also it felt a little weird and a bit like spying on our kids and each other to be able to look back at footage of all comings and goings when we don’t need to.

Theraffarian · 12/02/2024 20:26

I pay annually , so will cancel and re subscribe for a year in a couple of weeks to get the best refund . Did look at Eufy but not happy with the security issues they have had with other people being able to see the wrong camera feeds on occasions.

Some people do need ring doorbells for evidence purposes. Police won't act on antisocial behaviour without evidence and a camera stopped the behaviour as they knew they were being recorded.

OP, I didn't know the prices are going up. Seems a bit of a big hike but I will still pay it I suppose.

How many people really do though? The reason everyone is so poor is they spend money on crap they don't need

Kpo58 · 12/02/2024 20:43

I have a Blink which is ok. It was nice knowing that that the delivery lady had put a parcel by the bins and hadn't even attempted to come anywhere near the front door or even on the side of the house with the front door. If I didn't have the camera, I would have never known that the parcel had been "delivered".

megletthesecond · 12/02/2024 14:00

I'll pay for it again this year but might stop next time and just keep 24hrs footage.

I'm not sure I want to have to remember to check it every day before it's lost though.

I have cancelled my Ring subscription but I can't see 24 hrs recordings. I Only seem to have access to live view.

It is. You can carry on using it cost free and it works exactly as it did, you’re only paying for the storage of the videos.

people seem to not know what they’re paying for

AdditionalCharacter · 12/02/2024 20:55

I have a Eufy system, doorbell and camera front and back. No subscription was a no brainer. Have had no issues with it, and they're all rechargeable.

Justfinking · 12/02/2024 20:26

Ahhh yes of course; I’m really feeling the pinch due to the £3 a month fees I’m paying for the doorbell footage storage - nothing at all to do with the £1000 a month nursery fees or the £350 a month hike in mortgage interest, it’s that damned security camera subscription

slowdaysloegin · 12/02/2024 21:51

You pay for blink now. I bought my system before the subscription came in so I can add new cameras to it but would have to pay if I got a new receiver. You might be able to buy older ones on eBay or something but I honestly don't know. It's really good but it's not subscription good tbh.
I did want a ring next time but screw that.

Yeah, i don’t think that’s one of the options. Live only or pay the subscriptions.

longtompot · 12/02/2024 22:48

We got rid of ours recently as we couldn't connect to it via our phones, they were too outdated, and then the door bell and the chime stopped connecting so we never heard if anyone was at the door.
My dh bought a cheapy £12 one from Amazon which works perfectly well and no sub to pay. Not that we paid it on Ring.

MooFroo · 12/02/2024 23:09

Ring is owned by Amazon - they seem to think they can do what they like
