Ring: extortionate price hike

Plsdiscuss · 08/02/2024 20:49

Just me who thinks the Ring doorbell subscription has had a ridiculous price rise?

Current annual price: £34.99
New annual price: £49.99

That's huge. 43% increase 😳

Yes! Seriously considering my options.

purpleme12 · 08/02/2024 20:51

It's bad ☹️

AnEmbarrasmentofWitches · 08/02/2024 20:51

We have stopped using our Amazon Prome account and Amazon Music because of the price hikes, and also because even free services became unusable because of all the awful adverts constantly.

we have Spotify now and play it through the speakers, Miles better. It‘A not surprising they are doing something similar with the Ring doorbell.

I really want to stop using Prime, but it's so easy to have something delivered within 24 hours.

Got a bottle of Bailey's a fortnight ago that was £6 cheaper than Tesco. 17 hours after I ordered it.

If you cancel now (you'll get a pro rata refund for any time you've prepaid) then you can buy another year at the current rate. That's what I've just done - figure it gives me a year to think about which non-subscription doorbell to replace it with.

Oooh. I like your style.

It's a quid a week total - less than 5p a day increase.

I bet my house you throw more away from your fridge every week than that.

OldTinHat · 08/02/2024 21:51

Just jumping on and hijacking...I've not been notified of a price increase?

My Ring is v1 and doesn't charge properly anymore. Has anyone else had that issue? I'm tempted to get rid and buy a new one.

I understand the cost per week.

Amazon increasing the price by 43%...not ok. Particularly after they changed my Prime Video T&C mid contract to include adverts.

Jeez, that's a lot.
I'll have to take the hit this year though as I live in a dodgy area. I don't want to have to always remember to check within the 24hr window.

Roserunner · 08/02/2024 22:31

We had the email today as well, we have a doorbell and security light so have 2 subscriptions. They were £25 for the year each when we first got them so that's 100% increase in just a few years. I don't really want to have to change them but it might be worth it if they carry on putting prices up. We certainly won't buy again if either breaks!

Notfastjustfurious · 08/02/2024 22:38

Each price increase might be small but when it's every single company it does start to add up. That Amazon hike is pretty huge though after only last year increasing the price as it was. The adverts may be short but they are annoying, I won't be continuing my subscription. We all need to start cancelling and hitting them in the pocket for a change.

iknoweverythingbecauseiam4 · 08/02/2024 23:29

There’s a thread on Reddit about this. Everyone cancelling. The Eufy doorbells have no subscription and the cheapest wireless unit is only a little more expensive than the Ring subscription.

We’re on holiday at the moment but will definitely cancel when we’re back. 40% annual increases are a joke. Hope a newspaper picks this up and Ring review their increase decision. They’re not offering anything additional to justify it.

Ohyeahwaitaminute · 08/02/2024 23:39

I refused to purchase a Ring doorbell once I understood that it was by subscription.
Got a Eufy one instead. Bit more upfront cost.

Does the trick.

PringPring · 08/02/2024 23:54

It's such a huge hike.

When I bought mine it was £25 annual fee. Not that long ago! Then it went to 35, and now £50?!

They can fuck right off.

I'm sick of all these greedy companies. 😡

I've never heard of them, but sounds like Eufy is the way forward. Thanks.

I hope I can buy it on Amazon.

We switched to Eufy. Perfect! No subscription needed.

megletthesecond · 09/02/2024 07:13

Does the Eufy keep videos for 28 days? Or at least a couple of weeks?

mynamechangemyrules · 09/02/2024 07:31

Oh god- I got a ring doorbell in the Black Friday sale and still haven't put it up but there's been a spate of burglaries near me and meant to do it this weekend- do you HAVE to subscribe?!!

Theunamedcat · 09/02/2024 07:34

You dont have to subscribe I only subscribe because I have a violent unpredictable ex and I might need it for court

mynamechangemyrules · 09/02/2024 07:39

I have one of those too @Theunamedcat so probs a good idea. I was hoping it would record some of the shit he says outside to the kids. But I'd have to pay for that feature? What comes free..?! Just the actual hardware.

megletthesecond · 09/02/2024 07:39

myname you don't have to subscribe. It keeps recordings for 24hrs if you don't.
I live somewhere grim and like having a month of recordings stashed away in case me, or the police, need to look at it.

If you want to keep videos for up to 180 days, and save/download them, then yes. Their website explains the features available with their plans.
