RANT. Five hundred fucking quid for one month energy and a husband who keeps putting the fucking heating on.

£477 and some change. This month's gas and electric bill. It's normally up to fifty quid either side of 300 which is bad enough but this one fucking hurt! Yes this is each month, not quarter. Month. 31 days. For a little 3 bed semi.

My husband puts the heating on if you so much as blow in his fucking face. I've been begging him to put a fucking jumper on. I keep turning the heating off. He turns it back on.

I submitted the meter readings on the 1st as always and this month's bill is as above. Nearly 500 quid. I nearly cried. I finally got him to agree that we have to reduce our usage and to keep the heating off during the day after we got this bill. We've agreed it before after bills at the top end of 350 yet somehow it goes back to oh it was cold, oh the cat was cold, oh just for an hour... Then before I know it, the heating's back on to 30 all day and night .

I've bought everyone thermal long johns, furry slippers and those big blankets that are jumpers with hoods.

I turned the heating off this morning and he turned the fucker back on because - and I quote - "it's a bit cold".

Yes it's a bit cold, arseface. Put an extra layer on 🤬 and fucking deal with it!

I'll calm down of course but right now I'm so angry that my stomach feels like it's on fire. Yes I can pay it, we're very lucky in that respect I know. It's not that I can't find five hundred quid from anywhere, I can do some jiggery pokery and sort it, it's that I've got to pull five hundred quid out of my arse because mr neshbastard refuses to deal with a bit of a chill.

30? Is he wandering around in tshirt and shorts sweating?

Look at your insulation.

onetwonetoo · 09/02/2024 12:21

Good lord that's high!

Who are you with? We also once lived in a three bed semi and had wild heating costs. We were with BG at the time and saved a lot by moving providers.

The house was also terribly insulated. What's your like?

It's really not sustainable and I would also be fuming with DH.

Where about are you? We're SE and it's 10 degrees today. Plenty warm enough for a jumper and no heating!

Sympathies OP!

But that’s higher than the cap?

onetwonetoo · 09/02/2024 12:22

I missed the bit where you said it was on 30!!

30?! Jesus wept! I'd be making him pay for it by himself!
Our heating doesn't go over 22. It's stifling
!!

Mumoftwo1312 · 09/02/2024 12:24

30C is insane. We're comfortable at 15C here. He'll make himself ill with it that hot. Just insane, so wasteful, yanbu for being angry.

Btw, love the word nesh, my ILs use that (and are very nesh themselves).

Seeingadistance · 09/02/2024 12:24

30?!

I don’t think my heating is capable of getting above 20, if that.

35965a · 09/02/2024 12:24

The cap is per unit not per month. There is no cap on usage.

I spend all winter with hot water bottles, Oodies, heated throws and electric blankets. I only put the heating on if I can’t dry washing, and it’s cozy and fine. I’d kill him.

That was to a PP who said it’s much higher than the cap BTW

Flickersy · 09/02/2024 12:26

If he won't be sensible, make it his problem. He can do the jiggery pokery to find £500. Why is this on you?

Nolongera · 09/02/2024 12:26

30C!

It's 17C in here and I thinks it's nice.

Parky04 · 09/02/2024 12:26

Heating is rarely on in our house, although I do appreciate we live in SE England. We have electric throws, which are one of the best things ever invented!

RosieAway · 09/02/2024 12:27

@35965a thanks. I’ve never fully understood it?!

Flickersy · 09/02/2024 12:27

Or tell him he can have it on as much as he likes but if it goes above £250 a month (say), he has to find the surplus from his personal spending money. That might sharpen his mind.

MojoMoon · 09/02/2024 12:27

What is your actual consumption in kWh? It will be on the bill.

30c is a truly insane temperature to heat a home to.
Does he work from home?

RenovationRenovationRenovation · 09/02/2024 12:28

Can you turn it down rather than off? Keep the chill off but still have jumpers etc.

Flickersy · 09/02/2024 12:28

RosieAway · 09/02/2024 12:27

@35965a thanks. I’ve never fully understood it?!

The cap is price per unit. It is often presented as an annual figure in the news. I.e. a typical household with typical usage will be capped at £2,500 per year. But if that household's usage increased, so would the bill.

If you use more, you have to pay more.

Seaweed42 · 09/02/2024 12:29

Why are you saying 'yes I can pay it'

Does he not contribute to the bills?
Perhaps he is a SAHD. Are you out of the house more than he is?
Is he under the average weight do you think?

Could you buy an oil filled rad for the room he's in, that might be cheaper?

If my DH kept turning the heat off without saying anything when I put it on, I'd be pretty pissed off with him doing that.

Does he really have it on at 30? If so that's why your bill is so massive. No one needs the heating on that high, 20 is warm. If he thinks 30 is normal he should get to the doctor to get checked out, most people would find heating the house to 30 absolutely unbearable. My fuel costs for the last month was 268, 4 bed detached with rubbish insulation, heating on 18 hours a day at 17.5 to 19.

Alainlechat · 09/02/2024 12:37

18 degrees in our house but we put it on if it goes below 16 in the day.

For Jan we used 650 electric and 2400 gas.

We always use a lot of electricity but yours is higher still!

Sdpbody · 09/02/2024 12:38

My January's was £389 and I have the heating on a lot!! £100 more than us is amazing!!

WaltzingWaters · 09/02/2024 12:39

I feel the cold but 30 is RIDICULOUS!!
is he walking around in shorts and t shirt? He needs to wear lots of layers. Or see a doctor!
He can pay the excess of the bill out of his own pocket!
