Things you still do as an adult

what do you do as an adult, that you shouldn’t really still do?

I (30F) still sick my thumb. 2 young kids and a decent job.

I don’t do it in the day, just at night. Didn’t really think anything of it until my daughter shoved my own thumb back in my mouth whilst she was in bed with us the other night.

I still ride on shopping trolley handles!

Two of my main hobbies are colouring-in, and cutting things out of magazines etc and gluing into a book to make collages. I mean, we're talking grown-up colouring books and relatively arty collages, but ultimately it's very much still colouring and gluing.

At work we have a flip-chart pad for meetings. I frequently write 'BUM' on about the 10th page in and then put it back in the stationery cupboard.

I really, really love stickers. I have been known to buy myself sticker books from the children's section in Waterstone's.

I still call elephants 'heffalumps'.

We have a doorstopper somebody bought us that's shaped like a little dog. We use it to prop open the door between the dining room and the lounge. If we close that door in the evenings, I have to make sure the doorstopper dog is on our side of the door, because I don't want him to be lonely on his own.

I can't walk past/through a field of sheep without baaing at them. I'm actually really good at it, so they often baa back at me.

IloveGogglebox · 08/02/2024 12:10

Oh just remembered that I still put crisps in my sandwiches. Even at work in front of colleagues. And as another PP put I get excited when I get new things, either delivered or shop bought I must open it straight away and clap with glee 🤣🤣🤣

Shekissedagirlandshelikedit · 08/02/2024 12:10

My comfort thing as a child was holding my hair under my nose and sniffing it, which I still do when tired so I need to keep it a certain length.

I also do hula hoops on fingers. They don't taste the same otherwise.

I love a low wall that I can walk along/jump off. There's one in town that is famous for it and you often see adult 'kids' walking it and re living their childhood.

KreedKafer · 08/02/2024 12:13

Oh, and also I frequently perform sideways skids on shiny floors if I'm in my socks.

Ozzyskye · 08/02/2024 12:19

I "tidy" the playroom at night, which is basically building Lego and setting up different Playmobil scenes

Ds (5) has recently discovered Pokémon and in reliving my Gameboy Pokémon yellow days... I've also introduced him to Pokémon go... For his benefit, obviously.

Love climbing trees, soft play and trampoline parks

Love pond dipping too, and muddy walks with wellies

BeverForget · 08/02/2024 12:19

Every time I drive past sheep or cows, shouting 'Moooo!' or 'Baaaaa!'
It is weirdly compulsive, but luckily I don't live in a rural setting.

I'm a professional 40 year old woman and my side of the bedroom still looks like it would have done when I was a teenager. Piles of clothes, books, random crap discarded everywhere. I always assumed I'd be tidier when I grew up. Never happened.

Same. The rest of the house is broadly presentable, but my side of the bedroom is a shittip. I pick everything up from the floor when our cleaner comes, and I occasionally tidy my dressing table, but... 🤷🏻‍♀️

Spry · 08/02/2024 12:26

I still get a thrill about the notion of sleeping on the top bunk. Using an umbrella (rather than just a coat with a hood) still feels slightly illicit as I think I was told as a young child that you had to be really responsible with umbrellas as you could take someone's eye out. I was 52 last birthday.

NorthCliffs · 08/02/2024 12:28

I still love my Mr. Men duvet cover and pillowcase.

oramge · 08/02/2024 12:30

If I get hold of a Milky Way I always bite all the chocolate off and then eat the middle on its own 😋

Untrained · 08/02/2024 12:33

44F here! I also greet my old stuffed toys when I open the blanket box where I keep them. They are arranged in there sat in a 'round', propping each other up. I have specified in my 'will' (handwritten note of who gets what, what my last wishes are etc) that my oldest teddy - Julie - is to be buried with me.

Verv · 08/02/2024 12:58

Still twist and stroke my hair when im watching tv or in bed.
Still love underwear with dinosaurs/rockets/superheroes etc on.

11NigelTufnel · 08/02/2024 13:06

I still have to jump or walk to the side if there are 3 drain covers in a row on the pavement. Walking over 3 is bad luck. 2 together and you make a wish.

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 08/02/2024 13:18

I'm 40 with no kids but everyone thinks I'm a great aunt/babysitter.

The truth is I would look fairly odd doing somethings I love without children with me...

  1. Swings, Slides, Climbing frame
  2. Bouncing castles - everyone praises me for occupying kids at a party. I'm there to bounce!
  3. Disney or Pixar film in cinema
  4. Musicals like Aladain, Matilda
  5. Finger painting, potato painting, logo etc

I think my OH is the only one who realises, I enjoy it as much as the kids. Everyone thinks I do it out of decency. Lies!!!

EscapeTheCastle · 08/02/2024 13:19

I sometimes watch the A-Team and really enjoy it.

Also, I know deep down in my heart that one day I will have a real life adventure like a BBC children's drama involving a ghost or time travel. A cross between The Moon Dial and A Box of Delights.

Tootytoot78 · 08/02/2024 13:38

I sometimes skip down the road, not with a rope but a skippity skip. Only if DH is with me though, it would look weird if I was on my own.

I am 70 this year.

Beahappy82 · 08/02/2024 13:40

I sometimes skip through the house!!

And can I ask am I the only one, I'm 48 now and still waiting to feel like a proper adult ( like my mum and dad were)or is that just me?

55 here and I'm still waiting as well!

AvoSourdough · 08/02/2024 14:03

FrenchandSaunders · 08/02/2024 10:18

When I get off the bus near the top of my road I have to run as fast I can to get round the corner and into my road before the bus passes me or it’s bad luck.

I’m 55 and realise I must look very odd 🤣

This has made my day! I'm picturing myself looking down from the upper deck of a bus at a woman running up the road as soon as she gets off!

superplumb · 08/02/2024 14:18

InMySpareTime · 08/02/2024 09:57

I love cracking the ice on frozen puddles.
I say "YAY!😁" when I see a rainbow.
When it snows I stick out my tongue to lick snowflakes.
I high five tree branches (even when people can see me).
When the car drives round a curve I lean exaggeratedly and say "wheeeeeeeeeeeee" until it straightens up again.
If someone drops a pea, I look shocked and accuse them of pea-ing on the floor/table/surface.
Any mention of pantomime must be met with some sort of "behind you" or "OH NO IT ISN'T!" type gag.
I always have stickers and chocolate coins in my bag in case someone needs cheering up. Adults or children (in fact, chocolate coins are more appreciated by adults as nobody else offers them)

You sound awesome!

I hope you'll be sitting in the front seats having pretended to drive it? 😁

Phlewf · 08/02/2024 14:28

This is a well timed thread. Yesterday when my 13 year old came in they said next doors 5 year old was head and shoulders in the hedge because “they wanted to know what it was like inside” and my kiddo said it was a shame you couldn’t do stuff like that once your were not little because it would look weird. I assured them that adults did weird and childlike things when no one was looking. Honestly they were pleased and I saw them looking at the hedge wondering what the inside of a hedge is like. I’ll show them this thread so they feel more able to act on impulse.

I sing song describe what I’m doing like taking out the bins or looking for an email.

Dapbag · 08/02/2024 14:29

When DH and I finish our breakfast boiled eggs we always turn the empty egg upside down in the egg cup and push it towards the other one saying, 'Could you eat another?' We then smash the top of the egg with our spoon and act shocked when we find it empty.

We've been together 40 years and have never not done this.

I love this thread and you lot are wonderful.

GreySantaRabbit · 08/02/2024 14:29

I frequently reread my Famous Five and Malory Towers books. It's comforting. I've also still got my Pippa dolls and change their outfits to suit Christmas, Easter and summer. ☺️
