Snow watch, for 8th Feb

We've already had the county decide in advance that all schools and colleges are shut due to the snow tomorrow. Cue a bit of frothing on social media that it won't snow.

Last year they did this and we did have enough snow to warrant the decision and for people to see that it was the right decision. But it also came off the back of them shutting for a day for 'gale force winds' which didn't turn out to be as bad.

So I'm watching and waiting. We're due snow from about 4am ish.

I wish it was due snow here

But nope, None due !

I love the snow , so much so, i actually thought about travelling up North and staying in a hotel for a couple of nights, but partner isnt keen and his the driver :/

Filterphobia · 07/02/2024 18:19

@DrMadelineMaxwell Flintshire?

I’m hoping it does snow so at least the decision is warranted. I have an excited DS who is looking forward to making snowmen.

Not fair. All we've got is rain. :(

It's really interesting because I was brought up in Scotland in 70s-80s and schools never shut , maybe in more rural areas . Never , I can remember playing on playgrounds that were covered in snow or god forbid frozen slush ( in skirts with white socks ) . I wonder what changed ?

KindleGirlie · 07/02/2024 18:57

Just 95% rain forecast for us tomorrow. Would prefer the snow!

Fairysteps11 · 07/02/2024 19:02

North West... forecast rain but with a yellow snow warning. Too close to the sea and we never get snow 🙄

DrMadelineMaxwell · 07/02/2024 19:15

@Filterphobia Yep. Flintshire.

Orange warning for us in Derbyshire. DS's school never shuts for anything though.

That was us growing up. I remember watching the news with envy as they said "schools all over the country shut due to snow" and not only did we have to go to school, but we didn't even have a flake. Insult to injury!

My parents still live there and at one point they'd not had snow for 10 years, whereas we'd (SE) had a good amount of snow nearly every year. One year there was snow on the hills so they went to them (Beacon Fell, if you know it) and found it absolutely packed with parents who'd brought their children to see snow for the first time.

My DS's school never shuts. Last time it was shut was when they were forced to during Covid. Never shut for weather related incidents!

Newtoniannechanics · 07/02/2024 19:28

Our schools would never shut just incase. It would have to be actual fact.

I love a snow day.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 07/02/2024 20:36

Last year was the first time the county decided in advance to tell schools to close and it was a bit of a relief not to have to take the risk on the ungritted roads. It doesn't go down well initially the night before, especially as there's not a single flake to be seen yet.

When my kids were in primary, we used to have to tune in to the local area radio station. And I was given the magic code to use if I ever needed to close the school (oh the power!). That was then followed when they were in secondary by times moving on and there being a website (that would instantly crash) to check instead.

Any guesses what the magic word was?

Not forecast until mid morning here, worried we’ll get to work/ school and get stuck.

WinterLobelia · 07/02/2024 20:43

Placemarking for the magic word.

just rain where I am sadly. 😢

CeriB82 · 07/02/2024 20:44

I remember few years ago a weather warning for snow and the school shut the evening before the blizzard.

which never happened.

dramatic headlining

Filterphobia · 07/02/2024 20:45

@DrMadelineMaxwell I agree that a county wide decision is a relief. I also feel for HT having to make the decision on the morning, much easier for parents to plan if they have notice the night before. Just hope it pays off and FCC crystal ball was working correctly this time!

Yellow snow is the worst

MYSTERIOUSGIRL2024 · 07/02/2024 20:51

It said Northern Ireland won't have snow yet today me checking out the weather forecast it's now given it for snow tomorrow! Ahh well I love the snow anyhow & great fun building snow people & snowball fights with my daughter 🤣. Just hoping the schools don't shut as she's swimming tomorrow & with the strikes from the buses she's missed out for 3 weeks running 😡

Fairysteps11 · 07/02/2024 21:04

And to think I get excited about it 😉

DrMadelineMaxwell · 07/02/2024 21:04

OK....wait for it. The code word to prove to the radio station that you were a genuine caller alerting them to the fact that you were shutting the school for snow was.....

Snow. ❄

Who'd have thought it?

Hoping for snow in midlads Ireland. Hearing different reports.

TheChosenTwo · 07/02/2024 21:21

None forecast here (feel so hard done by in the SE 😂), just ANOTHER weather warning for heavy rain…
swap?

GettingStuffed · 07/02/2024 21:27

I'm in Somerset and the forecast is snow, what is it? it rarely snows here, so little we go to east europe for it.
