Snow watch, for 8th Feb

We've already had the county decide in advance that all schools and colleges are shut due to the snow tomorrow. Cue a bit of frothing on social media that it won't snow.

Last year they did this and we did have enough snow to warrant the decision and for people to see that it was the right decision. But it also came off the back of them shutting for a day for 'gale force winds' which didn't turn out to be as bad.

So I'm watching and waiting. We're due snow from about 4am ish.

It's my birthday tomorrow - it snows quite often on my birthday.

@DrMadelineMaxwell I'm from Flintshire; I live away now but was meant to be going home tomorrow 🤨 Probably won't because of snow...

Happy Birthday.

And you are perfectly safe to head to Flintshire today as not a flake in sight

Hello fellow Flintshire folk! I’ve just been out with the dog and it’s drizzly, and actually relatively mild. I was a bit too warm in my jumper, parka, thermal trousers and gloves by the end of it. Not a flake of snow to be seen (yet).

I hope the snow arrives at some point today. I can't imagine how annoyed parents / carers will be if schools have been closed and you don't get any.

I'm in S Cumbria. There is not a flake here. It's dry and 3°C. No wind. Didn't have to scrape the car today.
We are covered by the yellow warning but I haven't seen any evidence of gritters yet!

In the midlands here and it's just started to snow but it's still absolutely chucking it down, as it has been since the early hours so there's zero chance of it settling.

justasking111 · 08/02/2024 09:38

Well it's wet in N Wales

I remember years ago there being a snow policy for teachers whereby in very heavy snow they just walked to the nearest school and worked there - no idea if I just dreamt that, I can’t see how it would work but it would have been decades before the stringent safeguarding in place in schools now! Has anyone else heard of this or am I going mad 🫣

I remember this. Good in principle. Lousy in practice and it never happened. Even back then it was recognised that it wasn't really a good idea to have a random teacher turn up and cover a class they didn't know. Supply teachers do that but get supply notes and lesson plans etc that just wouldn't be possible with no notice of snow.

And no way to easily map the right number of local teachers to the schools so if you just wandered up to your nearest school, they could have too many or too few teachers turning up for the kids you have in.

It is (finally snowing here)

It's snowing here but has been raining so nothing settling. DS has gone to school, I'm WFH just taking a coffee break.

My 75 year old mum was a reception teacher and this was the policy in the 80s.

I started teaching (secondary) in the early 80s and remember this being the official policy into the 90s, but I can't recall anyone I know ever doing this. We didn't have the same degree of safeguarding of course, but even then I remember thinking - how were they going to check up on people just walking in and claiming to be a teacher, especially pre-internet.

kookit · 08/02/2024 11:08

East Midlands / Derbyshire here. Was super wet this morning, roads were soaking, but a few hours have passed and we've now got thick white flakes that are covering the roads and settling quickly, with no signs of stopping yet. ❄️

Why do schools shut now if there’s snow??
It was so fun going to school back in the day when it was snowing. In Primary the teacher set up snowball fights (80’s) and the teenage years in the 90’s were fun walking to school and some guy you liked chasing you with snowballs…ahh

Someone at my children's secondary got put in impact for throwing a snowball. It's a big no no in their school, not sure of others but would be interested to hear!

Trenda · 08/02/2024 11:31

It snowed here briefly but the flakes were lovely and big. The ground was too wet for it to settle.
Anyway i was thinking about the saying
' Big snow,little snow
Little snow,big snow'
and wondering if its always right.

In Manchester - nothing (I am glad to say)

NoWordForFluffy · 08/02/2024 12:01

We have sleet now. It's really grim!

NoOrdinaryMorning · 08/02/2024 16:08

Loads here! (Which is v v v v unusual for us) Happy DC ☃️

Nice!

Ours hadn't started by the time the school run would have been finished in the morning. And most of it washed to slush by the time school would have finished at 3.30.

Totally could have kept schools open.

Oh looks very nice, where abouts are you?

We ended up with it snowing for a few hours mixed in with rain and got some slushy nonsense on the pavements for a couple of hours but it was all gone by about 3pm.

Fortunately schools here were sensible and took the watch and wait approach so they will stayed open.

Fairysteps11 · 08/02/2024 20:06

North West again here. Sadly, no yellow snow despite the warning. Very high winds that have blown neighbours wheelie bins over. No warning of that.
