Snow watch, for 8th Feb

We've already had the county decide in advance that all schools and colleges are shut due to the snow tomorrow. Cue a bit of frothing on social media that it won't snow.

Last year they did this and we did have enough snow to warrant the decision and for people to see that it was the right decision. But it also came off the back of them shutting for a day for 'gale force winds' which didn't turn out to be as bad.

So I'm watching and waiting. We're due snow from about 4am ish.

@DrMadelineMaxwell I wanted to suggest ‘snow’ but felt it was a dumb suggestion, obviously that’s the level we are working with! Are you SLT within FCC then, I’m curious?? I’m just a bog standard class teacher, never had the drive to do more than that 😂

Notafanoftaylorswift · 07/02/2024 22:10

Why do schools shut now if there’s snow??
It was so fun going to school back in the day when it was snowing. In Primary the teacher set up snowball fights (80’s) and the teenage years in the 90’s were fun walking to school and some guy you liked chasing you with snowballs…ahh

@Filterphobia Yep. Flintshire.

Saw Flintshire, you are in the amber zone. We're up the coast near Llandudno no cancellations yet.

It's the teachers who can't get in from the hills that tend to close our schools rather than the local weather.

Oop my kids schools open and they haven’t said anything about snow day

DrMadelineMaxwell · 07/02/2024 22:31

@Filterphobia At the time - it was over 15 years ago - I was a deputy in a school in FCC and it was in case I needed to make the decision in the head's absence. All heads independently back then had to ring the radio station to give the code word and prove that their info was genuine so the head had shared with me what it was.

Sadly I never had cause to use it. :)

@Notafanoftaylorswift When I first started teaching I recall a snow day where the head let the kids out at playtime to play in the snow and have snowball fights. Someone threw a snowball at another child and it hit her cheek and cut her face, queue an angry email from child’s parents, since then we have never been allowed to take the kids out to play in the snow 😭

North West... forecast rain but with a yellow snow warning. Too close to the sea and we never get snow 🙄

Yep. Unless it's 2010, then we got loads!

2024please · 07/02/2024 23:11

It's my birthday tomorrow - it snows quite often on my birthday.

@DrMadelineMaxwell I'm from Flintshire; I live away now but was meant to be going home tomorrow 🤨 Probably won't because of snow...

TheChosenTwo · 07/02/2024 23:57

I remember years ago there being a snow policy for teachers whereby in very heavy snow they just walked to the nearest school and worked there - no idea if I just dreamt that, I can’t see how it would work but it would have been decades before the stringent safeguarding in place in schools now! Has anyone else heard of this or am I going mad 🫣

CeriB82 · 08/02/2024 06:37

Im 1100ft above sea level in north wales.

not a snow flake. Its drizzle

Ridiculous24 · 08/02/2024 06:45

Has anyone got snow? We're in an amber warning, but it's just rain. I hate it when it's like this. I work quite a drive away and we're rural, so I worry about getting home.

QuestionableMouse · 08/02/2024 06:47

No snow in Hartlepool but the car looks frozen solid! Must be cold because my heating has been coming on and it's set to 15 overnight!

donteatthedaisies0 · 08/02/2024 06:50

Nope in Tayside , very very icy and cold though .

MoiraMoira · 08/02/2024 06:52

Sat here at high ground with an amber warning listening to the rain.

We’ll have to go out. It will be tedious.

AMuser · 08/02/2024 06:52

Absolutely peeing down in London. Here for vicarious snow news.

Respect and solidarity to the poster upthread considering driving TO the snow

amberglas · 08/02/2024 06:53

It is cold but there's no sleet (sleet was predicted here).

My 75 year old mum was a reception teacher and this was the policy in the 80s.

WhamBamThankU · 08/02/2024 07:04

No snow South Yorkshire.

Whinge · 08/02/2024 07:10

I'm curious to know if anyone has any snow yet. I live close to the amber zone. There's plenty of rain but not a snowflake in sight.

hotmailgmailoutlook · 08/02/2024 07:13

No snow in shropshire

NoWordForFluffy · 08/02/2024 07:21

We have rain. It's not as cold as they'd originally forecast for today either, I don't think.

Hello fellow Flintshire folk! I’ve just been out with the dog and it’s drizzly, and actually relatively mild. I was a bit too warm in my jumper, parka, thermal trousers and gloves by the end of it. Not a flake of snow to be seen (yet).
