Does anyone else feel unnerved by the news about King Charles?

Yes I know this belongs in the Royal section but more traffic here for people feeling like I do.

King Charles has cancer, I am sure William is wondering if he will become King sooner than he anticipated. It makes me wonder too if Kate will be okay due to her recent surgery - William really needs her by his side if he is going to take on the Big Job.

Harry rushing home feels bad to me. I mean, it's good that he is coming to see his dad but it makes me feel as though it's serious - I just hope, hope it's not pancreatic cancer - but I just don't have a good feeling.

The Queen's only been gone 16 months. I feel out of sorts. Anyone else?

Queen Elizabeth became Queen at age 25 out of the blue & she managed.

William will be fine!

Fit or ready? He's forty and has been in active training for the role for at least 20 years. How much practice does a person need to wear a fancy hat and pose for the stamps?

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 06/02/2024 18:07

It is sad for him and his family but people were queueing & fighting to see a dentist in Bristol today so I care about that.

I agree with all of this, and feel despair at the state of this country. Perhaps that's the reason why I feel unnerved - there's not much else to make us feel stable, is there!

The Royal Family don't make me feel stable or add anything much to my life.

I wish him well and hope he recovers, but it doesn't 'unnerve' me or affect me any more than any other stranger/ celebrity/ distant acquaintance getting this awful diagnosis.

You seem insane. This does not affect you in any way. The King is a figure, an idea, a stranger to you. Last week a 44 year old friend of mine died because the covid lockdowns meant he was unable to see a doctor and his cancer went undiagnosed until it spread. This morning my FiL has a cancer op delayed due to waiting lists: I have a family member unable to access mental health care despite a number of psychotic episodes in which they have endangered lives. If you have escaped such tragedies, feel fortunate instead of creating drama about someone who is, to all intents and purposes a fiction used to control you.

stands to applaud

What makes you think that? How do you know how much different people care about different issues?

Well there aren't any threads about Gaza trending here at the moment, and this is all over the front pages of the news.

Balloonhearts · 06/02/2024 18:12

Wasn't he too late to say goodbye to his grandmother? Probably that's affecting his need to be with his father while he can.

LemonLymanDotCom · 06/02/2024 18:15

Unnerving?
No. Not in the slightest.

jasminocereusbritannicus · 06/02/2024 18:16

I just think the media have him 6 foot under already!
The bulletin said it was found while his benign prostate problem was treated, so I’m thinking bowel or bladder cancer?
it said it was caught at an early stage… so that’s good… but the way the tv news etc went on about it it was as if a death sentence had been announced. Not all cancer is untreatable; it is ,however, a concerning time.

Bululu · 06/02/2024 18:18

TDS strikes again. Biden has actually done more damage across the world than Trump eg countless wars for one. I don't suppose you heard about what Biden said yesterday. Biden said he recently met with Mitterrand of Germany, a few issues with that, 1) Mitterrand was the French president & 2) He died in 1996. Senile Biden is far more of a threat than Trump, and is terrifying that the democrats are allowing him to go ahead for re-election in November.

Exactly! Plus IF Trumps gets back is on Biden and the Democrats. What a bunch!

VampireWeekday · 06/02/2024 18:19

I genuinely don't care at all.

SurfSmurf · 06/02/2024 18:19

Well said!

KStockHERO · 06/02/2024 18:20

No, weirdly I don't feel unnerved by the news that an insanely rich and privileged man who apparently has a God-given right to rule over me, who I've never met and who I give absolutely no fucks about has cancer.

I'm much more unnerved by increasing wealth inequality, falling life expectancy, double-digit inflation, normalisation of food banks, child poverty, air pollution, rape being essentially decriminalised, acid attacks on the streets of London, newborn babies being left in public parks, and more. You know, stuff that actually matters.

OhcantthInkofaname · 06/02/2024 18:21

We know the queen died of cancer. It wasn't announced until after her death. We don't know how long she had been diagnosed before she died.

Bet you would have called him all the selfish bastards under the sun if he hadn't come. 😆

Wondering17 · 06/02/2024 18:24

No not unnerved. Didn’t really register. Other fish to fry and things to worry about. I think the RF mainly exist in their own bubble. Not sure what they would be replaced with but I don’t think they are good for this country.

On a human level it is horrible for anyone to get cancer and it is a horrible disease.

Maia77 · 06/02/2024 18:25

No.

I meant to say 'Well said' to this, not the OP.

Man in 70s gets cancer. No shock there.

He'll get the best treatment available with no wait and will have no financial hardship to manage alongside cancer.

Nothing unnerving there for anyone other than his nearest and dearest.

Meanwhile cancer wait times for ordinary people are a disgrace and mean avoidable death for many. Money worries come with cancer for many too. That is much more unnerving.

Yes the media coverage has been ridiculous. The live feed on BBC I mean Confused give the man peace to have whatever treatment he needs.

Yes I know what you mean and I feel the same. It’s too soon for William to be King I don’t think he’s ready. Charles has been around for 75 years - so most people’s whole lives. It’s too soon after the Queen. I just hope he is ok and has a speedy recovery.

Brumbies · 06/02/2024 18:30

I watched my sister and my husband die of cancer, I have no wish to watch PC or read about him.

Bululu · 06/02/2024 18:31

Just as long as H&M dont end up as King & Queen, it will be fine it would never happened. However, I bet some of the hard die republicans would suddenly love the monarchy.

Hakunatomato · 06/02/2024 18:31

Why are you making this all about you? How utterly vicarious.

Nah. I don't wish him any ill of course, but I think being unnerved would require being much more invested in the individual and institution than I am. I just don't care enough to feel anything beyond the general sympathy one feels at a cancer diagnosis.

This. One of my old school friends had a 2 year old daughter who was diagnosed and then sadly died from cancer. My friends husband had to continue working almost throughout, and my friend had to quit her job due to living in the hospital for months on end. They relied on donations from family and friends in the end or they would have lost their house.

I sympathise with anyone going through a cancer diagnosis but to feel unnerved about/for a famous person you don't know is odd.

Notellinganyone · 06/02/2024 18:34

While I feel sorry in the sense I would with anyone who has this diagnosis, I think it’s time for the monarchy to go.
